Zions Bancorp.(ZION) reported its first-quarter 2012 earnings per share of 33 cents, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 26 cents. Also, this compared favorably with the prior-quarter earnings of 30 cents. After considering non-cash effects of the discount amortization on convertible subordinated debt as well as additional accretion on acquired loans and accelerated amortization of discount on $700 million redemption of Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) preferred stock, Zions’ first-quarter net income came in at $25.5 million or 14 cents per share. This was slightly below the prior-quarter earnings of $44.4 million or 24 cents.
The U.S. District Court of Southern Florida (Miami) has asked JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) to pay $110 million to settle a class lawsuit related to the charging of inappropriate overdraft fees to its customers. The court held the company responsible for manipulating transaction entries to generate larger overdraft fees, but this settlement has to be first approved by the U.S. District Judge in Miami. The lawsuit filed by the customers stated that the transactions were re-sequenced by JPMorgan in such a way that the largest withdrawals were deducted first instead of being cleared in the order in which they were received. As a result, customers’ balances diminished faster, resulting in a larger number of ‘overdrawn’ transactions, each of which then became chargeable. With a rise in debit card usage,

In an attempt to expand its mobile commerce (mCommerce) platform, yesterday, MasterCard Inc. (MA) announced a global strategic alliance with mFoundry. The latter is a well-positioned mobile banking solutions provider in the US with seven years of experience. Besides the collaboration, MasterCard also agreed upon being a leading investor in mFoundry to strengthen the combined mCommerce initiative. However, the terms of the deal remain undisclosed. As a result of the alliance, mFoundry’s mobile banking software solutions will align with MasterCard’s Tap & Go PayPass technology, which functions on near field communication (NFC) process. This will enhance and ease the customer’s mobile experience. The consumers can now make secure payments and transfer funds through the NFC-oriented PayPass terminal at any of MasterCard’s merchants and mFoundry’s over 560 banks and credit unions,

Bank of America Corporation (BAC) has hit the headlines for manipulating overdraft fees. On Monday, the U.S. District Court of Southern District of Florida (Miami) ordered BofA to pay back $410 million to its more than 13 million customers who were charged with inappropriate overdraft fees by the company over the last decade. The court has held BofA responsible for manipulating transaction entries to generate larger overdraft fees. Transactions were re-sequenced by the bank so that the largest withdrawals were deducted first instead of being cleared in the order in which they were received. As a result, customers’ balances diminished faster, resulting in a larger number of ‘overdrawn’ transactions, each of which then became chargeable. BofA’s attorney said that those customers who had debit cards between January 2001 and May

However, this is below the prior quarter’s earnings of 45 cents per share. However, after considering non-cash effects of the discount amortization on convertible subordinated debt and additional accretion on acquired loans, Zions reported third quarter net profit of $65.2 million or 35 cents per share. This compares favorably with the prior quarter’s net income of $29.0 million or 16 cents per share and the prior-year quarter’s net loss of $80.5 million or 47 cents per share. The results in the quarter continued to improve owing to the year-over-year growth in net interest income, continuous improvement in credit quality as well as a fall in non-interest expenses.

Earnings reports of healthcare stocks helped push the markets higher aided by steel stocks. Tech majors such as IBM and Intel also posted encouraging results surpassing estimates. Encouraging data reflecting strengthening new-home construction added to the cheer. The indices rebounded on Tuesday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5% to close at 12,266.75. The Standard & Poor 500 Index gained 0.6% and ended at 1,312.62, just 2.50 points lower than its 50-day moving average. The Nasdaq closed at 2,744.97 after gaining 0.4%.
The second anniversary of the market’s Bull Run ended on a weak note as markets pared gains of the earlier trading day and closed marginally lower. The S&P 500 has gained 95.4% since it slid to 676.53 on March 9, 2009. However, continuing unrest in the Persian Gulf and concerns over the conflict spreading to other oil rich nations continued to create apprehensions among investors. Technology stocks also weighed heavy on the indices following a weak outlook from Texas Instruments. The volatile fear gauge, CBOE Volatility Index rose above 20 and the advance decline ratio on the New York Stock Exchange was evenly balanced. On the NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX, consolidated volumes were roughly 7.04 billion shares, below the daily average volumes of 8.47 billion of last year. The Dow

Although a major recovery in the asset markets has been witnessed in recent quarters, the outlook for the U.S. banking industry remains in question due to several negatives, including asset-quality troubles, the continuation of both residential and commercial real estate loan defaults and the impact of tighter regulations and policy changes. After enduring extraordinary shocks in 2008, U.S. banks entered an exceptional state of turmoil in 2009. Starting as a credit issue in the subprime segment of the mortgage market, the situation affected the entire financial services industry, in all corners of the globe. In other words, the financial crisis ultimately morphed into a massive economic crisis, which has had major ramifications across the entire world. Although the U.S. banking industry is still grappling with weak revenue, diminishing loan demand

Investors mostly stayed away from the Street on Friday, being New Year’s Eve and markets closed largely mixed. This was also one of the lightest volume trade days of the year. Though, apart from the Dow, certain benchmarks shed a few points on the closing day, the markets posted an optimistic picture at the year end. This was the second consecutive year that markets moved up. In addition, the benchmarks also posted double-digit growth for the year. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 0.07% and closed at 11,577.51. The S&P 500 was down 0.02% and closed at 1,257.64 and the Nasdaq ended the day at 2,652.87, down 0.38%.
We have recently downgraded our recommendation on Washington Federal Inc. (WFSL) to Underperform from Neutral based on its sizable exposure to risky loan portfolios and rising costs. Washington Federal’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2010 earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a nickel. Results primarily benefited from a rise in revenue and a fall in the provision for loan losses. On the other hand, weak loan demand and increase in operating expenses were among the negatives. Though the majority of Washington Federal’s loan portfolio comprises high quality single-family residential loans, we are concerned about its sizable exposure to land acquisition & development and speculative construction loan portfolios, which are still extremely risky. During the last two years, the majority of nonperforming loans and charge-offs have come from these portfolios. Though Washington Federal

According to a government report released on Tuesday, the number of banks on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) list of problem institutions in the second quarter grew to 829 from 775 in the previous quarter and 416 in the year-ago quarter. This is the highest since the savings and loan crisis in the early 1990s. Banks that feature on the problem list are most likely to fail, though some may still scrape through. As of now, only about 13% of banks on the FDIC’s problem list have actually failed so far. What is interesting is that this percentage is likely to change; though the problem list is growing at a slower pace, bank failures are accelerating. The How and Why of Bank Failures There have been 118 bank failures

Eight more banks including ShoreBank, a big community bank based in Chicago, were shuttered by the U.S. regulators on Friday. The rating agency has tempered its outlook for Bank of America Corporation (BAC) (or BofA) , Citigroup Inc. (C) and Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) to “negative” from “stable”.
On Wednesday, Zions Bancorporation ( ZION ) entered into a total return swap (TRS) deal with Deutsche Bank AG (DB) to lessen credit risks for certain securities in its portfolio. Through this arrangement, the company could unload risks from $1.16 billion portfolio of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). A TRS deal allows the party to receive total return-to-gain exposure and benefit from an asset without the risk of actually owning it. CDOs are a type of structured asset-backed security (ABS) whose value and payments are derived from a portfolio of fixed-income underlying assets. As a part of the deal, Deutsche Bank will take over all the credit risks of this particular CDO portfolio and provide timely payment of principal and all the interest when they become due to Zions.
Although a major recovery in the asset markets has been witnessed in recent quarters, the outlook for the U.S. banking industry still remains in question due to several negatives Incorporatedluding asset-quality troubles, drawbacks of new regulations and the continuation of both residential and commercial real estate loan defaults. After enduring extraordinary shocks in 2008, the U.S. banks entered an exceptional state of turmoil in 2009.
