The gold mining industry is watching its production costs surge amid rising energy prices, inflation and increasing labor costs. In 2012, Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX), the world’s largest primary gold producer, says its total cash operating cost could increase 13% to 22%. Meanwhile, Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), another key gold stock, expects to see a 6%-to-14% rise in costs applicable to gold sales. The industry is hoping that rising gold prices will buoy the hike in production costs. An annual survey of industry predictions by the London Bullion Market Association forecasts gold could top $2,000 an ounce this year. The outlook – made by 26 leading precious metals analysts from the world’s largest bullion-dealing banks and trading houses – underscores bullish speculation of gold prices in the broader market.
by Matthew Carr, Investment U Commodities Specialist Friday, August 12, 2011: Issue #1577 If you hold gold mining stocks in your portfolio, you’re probably a little miffed at the moment. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1,880 points between July 21 and the morning of August 11, the price of gold shot up 10.5 percent. And that included a launch upward of six percent to start this week. But gold mining stocks haven’t benefited from the price of gold. Except for around a five-percent pop on Wednesday, most gold mining stocks were pummeled alongside the broader market. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) tumbled over six percent from August 3 to August 8 as the price of gold was picking up speed. Earlier in the year, we

The Market Vectors-Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has rallied by more than 15.0 percent since July 28th, 2010 when the ETF was trading as low as $46.80. This leading gold mining ETF looks slightly overbought here and may need to pullback soon or consolidate, however, the trend is very strong and remains nicely intact. Should the GDX pullback or consolidate there will be near term support around the $53.00 level. Intra-day the GDX will have resistance around the $56.10 – $56.50 area.
Gold mining company Goldcorp’s (GG) adjusted net profits more than doubled to 25 cents in the fourth quarter of 2009 from 12 cents per share in the year-ago period. Earnings which benefited from high metal prices, were also ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents. For the full year 2009, earnings were $588.2 million or $0.80 per share. Goldcorp was able to keep costs down in an inflationary environment. In the fourth quarter, cash costs were just US$289 an ounce. On a GAAP basis, fourth-quarter profit fell to $66.7 million or 9 cents a share, from $958.1 million, or $1.31 a share. The large drop was due to revaluation of future income tax liabilities, brought about by the sharp year-on-year drop in the U.S. dollar. Quarterly revenues jumped

So when it happened last Friday, many people got a nasty surprise. I’m talking about the huge decline for gold, as traders shaved around $50 an ounce off the price – one of the biggest daily drops in recent memory. Fortunately, I tipped you off about gold prices falling right here just two weeks ago. I did so by simply looking at the options activity among gold stocks, noting that volatility had increased and the market was indicating a series of large moves for gold shares. The question now is: Does this signal the end of the party

by David Fessler, Energy and Infrastructure Expert Wednesday, December 2, 2009: Issue #1149 You don’t have to look too far these days without hearing someone talk about how high gold prices could go. The topic is fiercely debated in the mainstream financial media at the moment – especially for investors who are late to the party. But are they really late, or is the “party” just getting started? Yes, investors who bought the gold ETF, SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE: GLD), or gold miners like Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), or Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY) a year ago have seen their investments soar by 54%, 83% and 184% respectively. But gold continues to soar. And large open market purchases from central banks in China, India and Russia are only helping the price

But sometimes, we make exceptions – especially when their over-zealous attitude causes a stock to blast higher and hand us triple-digit gains. I remember one such occurrence in particular with a high-tech company that we own in our Xclerated Profits Report portfolio. Thanks to some giddy CNBC analysts pumping up the price, the stock surged from $6 to $20 and we took half our position off the table for a gain of more than 100%. The small-cap stock has suffered along with the broader market, but there’s no doubt that its business is viable. It’s leading the way in the field of touch screen and

For example, one reader wanted to know how options can work with short positions – and referenced doing so on Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY). We talked about protecting against downside risk with long positions the other day, so let’s look at the other side. In this case, I’m assuming that you’re short on Yamana and trying to manage the position in order to not take a big loss in case it moves against you. Today, we’re going to kick things up a notch and explain how you can cleverly take the same covered call strategy and add a twist, by using deep-in-the-money covered calls. When you do so, you can achieve more consistent returns over time, while also protecting your capital. There is a conspiracy here – and it’s meant to keep you ignorant to a sector of the market that just doesn’t fit in with the “buy stocks and mutual funds” mantra that makes Wall Street money. You see, there are no upgrades or downgrades for covered calls, LEAPs, or puts.
