Markets reversed their winning streak and posted heavy losses with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plummeting 205 points or 1.7% to settle at 11,708.44. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) declined 2.0% to finish at 1,229.23. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 2.3% and closed at 2,638.42. However, on a day of sharp declines, the markets continued the trend of low

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut, Xerox has its presence in more than 160 countries. The company reported a profit of $281 million or $0.19 per share in the first quarter of 2011, including $53 million or $0.04 per share of charges on amortization of intangible assets. The profit reflects significant improvement compared with the year-ago loss of $42 million or $0.04 per share. On earnings per share basis, the company has beaten the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny with a profit of 22 cents compared with 17 cents in the third quarter of 2009. Revenues for the quarter surged 48% to $5.43 billion driven by an impressive growth in the Services segment, comprising document outsourcing (DO), business process outsourcing (BPO), and information technology outsourcing (ITO) businesses. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was $5.42 billion. Gross margin declined to 33.6% from 39.8% a year ago due to higher cost of sales, service, outsourcing and rentals.
by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Tuesday, September 28, 2010 Sometimes, it’s an earnings surprise that sends shares soaring. Other times, it’s the successful launch of a new product, or a new CEO takes the reins. But many times, the driving force behind a stock surge just comes down to good, old-fashioned word-of-mouth. Exhibit A: Xerox Corp. (NYSE: XRX). On September 13, a Barron’s cover story detailed the company’s newfound success as a data services provider. The positive vibes resulted in a 9.7% spike for the shares. Obviously, one good article isn’t enough to sustain a company’s growth. But it’s what the article revealed about Xerox’s longer-term future that should keep the company growing for years to come. In fact, Barron’s predicts that Xerox shares could double over the next

Earnings include stock based compensation but exclude one time item. The better-than-expected result was primarily driven by stringent cost management. Revenue Revenues decreased 8.0% year over year to $199.0 million from $216.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Foreign currency exchange rates favorably impacted revenues by $1.0 million. According to management, the year-over-year decline was primarily due to customer uncertainty related to the ongoing review of various alternatives that are aimed at enhancing stockholder value, going forward.
