The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed a larger-than-expected increase in natural gas supplies, as mild temperatures in parts of the country have restricted the commodity’s requirement for power burn. The injection – the ninth in 2012 – has added to already bloated inventories. Gas stocks – currently some 40% above the benchmark five-year average levels – are at their highest point for this time of the year, reflecting low demand amid robust onshore output. This has constantly pressured spot prices that slipped to a 10-year low in April. However, the most recent build – though above expectations – was still significantly lower than the average for this time, cutting the surplus relative to last year and the five-year average.
It’s crazy to think that in just the last three years, China has become the world’s second largest economy, the world’s largest energy consumer, and the world’s second largest oil consumer. A recent PriceWaterhouseCoopers report even estimates, “China could be the largest economy in the world as early as 2020…” Whether it happens by then, I honestly don’t know. But neither does anyone else. In fact, long-term estimates like these are almost never right. There’s one thing you can count on, though. No matter when (or even if) China takes the number one spot in the global economy, it’s going to require a great deal of energy either way. And it’s more important than ever investors take a close look at what’s going on. Because, when it comes to energy,

There are several factors that influence the decision of selecting an ETF for investment. Such factors include the past performance, holdings, sector exposure and concentration. Beyond these examples, expenses can also play an important role in the decision making process as well. The expense ratio of an asset fund refers to the total percentage of fund assets that are taken on a yearly basis to pay for administrative, management, advertising and all other costs that go into running an ETF. While these ratios are much smaller for ETFs than they are for mutual funds on average, investors should note that expenses still play a crucial role in determining the best fund in a segment. Furthermore, while many products may appear similar on the surface—with similar industry, holdings, and market cap

“Nobody ever got rich off of asset allocation.” That’s what Todd Schoenberger, Managing Principal at The BlackBay Group, told Yahoo! Finance readers recently. Instead, he advises, it’s much better to hold just two stock investments – specifically Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM). Exxon, after all, has $60 billion in cash at its disposal and Apple has $110 billion, more than enough to let both of them coast for some time. Similarly, they’re both stellar companies with impressive assets to offer investors… from Apple’s amazing stock price run-up over the years to Exxon’s steady dividend payouts. But what he forgets is that there is no “sure thing” investment in life. Sure, both companies have performed excessively well so far. But the past can only offer so

In its weekly release, Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported a rise in the U.S. rig count (number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the country). This can be attributed to an increase in the tally of both oil and natural gas-directed rigs. In particular, the natural gas rig count climbed for only the third time in 2012, while the oil rig count scaled another record high. The Baker Hughes rig count, issued since 1944, acts as an important yardstick for drilling contractors such as Transocean Inc. (RIG), Diamond Offshore (DO), Noble Corp. (NE), Nabors Industries (NBR), Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN), Helmerich & Payne (HP), etc. in gauging the overall business environment of the oil and gas industry. Analysis of the Data Weekly Summary: Rigs engaged

The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed that crude stockpiles jumped to their highest level since May 2011, as imports climbed. However, on the bullish side, the agency’s report revealed that refined product inventories – gasoline and distillate – dropped sharply from their previous week levels on stronger demand. Meanwhile, refinery utilization rate reflected an increase of 0.8%. The Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) Petroleum Status Report, which contains data for the previous week ending Friday, outlines information regarding the weekly change in petroleum inventories held and produced by the U.S., both locally and abroad. The report provides an overview of the level of reserves and their movements, thereby helping investors understand the demand/supply dynamics of petroleum products. It is an indicator of current oil prices and volatility that affect

Invest in the shortage that currently exists – LNG tankers – which will only be exasperated if the United States starts exporting. There’s a great, strange story by F. Scott Fitzgerald called, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. In it, the Washington family has discovered a mountain that’s made entirely of diamond in an uncharted part of Montana. It’s just one giant, mountain-sized chunk. The tale deals with greed and the basics of the law of supply. But the Washingtons can’t let anyone know their diamond mountain exists… If people found out, it’d collapse the diamond market, making the precious stone worthless. And the Washingtons themselves would be cast into poverty. So, it’s this strange dual existence for the Washingtons. They’re the wealthiest family in the world, but only

This can be primarily attributed to a decrease in the tally of both oil and natural gas-directed rigs. In particular, the natural gas rig count dropped for the thirteenth time in as many weeks, to touch a new 10-year low. The Baker Hughes rig count, issued since 1944, acts as an important yardstick for drilling contractors such as Transocean Inc. (RIG), Diamond Offshore (DO), Noble Corp.
The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed a smaller-than-expected increase in natural gas supplies, as pipeline imports from Canada declined. However, this is largely seen as a one-off shot, with mild April temperatures across the country restricting the commodity’s requirement for power burn. The injection – fourth in 2012 – has added to the already bloated inventories, thereby pressuring spot prices that slipped to a new 31-month low. Gas stocks – currently some 60% above the benchmark five-year average levels – are at their highest point for this time of the year, reflecting low demand amid robust onshore output. The Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) Petroleum Status Report – which contains data for the previous week ending Friday, outlines information regarding the weekly change in petroleum inventories held and produced by the U.S., both locally and abroad.
In May 2008 a call from a major brokerage was heard round the world. It was the “super spike” in the price of oil which called for prices to dramatically increase from the $115 level to an unthinkable $150-$200 a barrel. This call came from the same analyst that three years earlier saw $100 barrel crude when sweet Texas tea was hovering close to $60. The earlier call was also a somewhat unthinkable prospect. Recently, we got another call from the same brokerage… just a different analyst this time. The call isn’t quite the same, but the idea is. Oil prices are expected to move higher. We will leave the details of Iran or supply and demand out of this discussion and focus on how we can best position our

Statoil ASA (STO) along with its partner ExxonMobil Corporation (XOM) has found indications of natural gas in the Zafarani-1 well in Block 2 offshore Tanzania. The well, located about 80 kilometers off mainland Tanzania is considered to be of superior quality. Spud in early January, drilling activities of the well are likely to be over within three months. The drillship Ocean Rig Poseidon is being used to drill the well, which is the first exploration in the license spanning approximately 5,500 square kilometers. The well is expected to be 5,150 meters deep while the water depth at the site is 2,582 meters. But Douglas Adams explained that there was no real rhyme or reason why he chose “42.” It just popped in his head and he went with it. I always liked Deep Thought’s answer because 42 is a key number for people in the oil business – it’s the number of gallons in a standard barrel of oil. Now, I don’t think there are any sectors as exciting as oil, particularly now. We had a record year in 2011 in terms of prices. This year will be another record year as

ExxonMobil Corporation (XOM) will be banned from participating in Iraq’s fourth oil and gas licensing auction scheduled to take place in May. ExxonMobil’s exclusion from the auction is mainly due to the contracts that it signed with the country’s semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan. ExxonMobil turned out to be the first among the oil giants to gain entry into Kurdistan, after it signed a deal in mid October 2011 to explore six areas. But the signing of this contract has angered the Baghdad government. Iraq’s central government continues to assert its authority over the energy deals inked within its borders in the midst of continued lack of legislation for the sector. The Iraqi government also considers all deals signed with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) as unacceptable. On the other hand,

San Ramon, California-based Chevron Corporation (CVX) is one of the six super major oil and gas companies in the world and the second-largest energy firm in the U.S. behind Exxon Mobil (XOM). As a vertically-integrated oil entity, it is engaged in oil and gas exploration and production, refining and marketing of petroleum products, manufacturing of chemicals, and other energy-related businesses. Chevron, in its present form, resulted from the 2001 merger between Texaco and Chevron Corporation. In August 2005, the company acquired Unocal for $18.4 billion. The company divides its operations into three main segments: Exploration and Production; Manufacturing, Products, and Transportation; and Other Businesses. This discovery, 113 miles north of Exmouth Plateau area, marks Chevron’s thirteenth in the country since mid-2009. Located in the WA-374-P permit block in the Carnarvon Basin, the well was drilled to a water depth of 3,688 feet and encountered approximately 243 feet of net gas pay. Chevron acts as the operator of the block with a 50% interest, while the remaining stake is equally distributed between Royal Dutch Shell plc (RDSA) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM). This new find to a large extent substantiated the company’s projection that the Offshore Area 1 of Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin at the Lagosta prospect has 15 -30 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable natural gas. The exploration well Lagosta-2, drilled at a total depth of approximately 14,223 feet (4,335 meters), encountered about 4,813 feet (1,467 meters) of water. Anadarko has already mobilized another drillship in the area to spur exploration activity. Anadarko has been operating in Mozambique with drilling success in Lagosta and Camarão.
Among the most commonly asked questions by energy investors this new year is: will low natural gas prices continue in 2012 or will we see a durable rebound in prices from their multi-year plight? From a peak of about $13.60 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2008 (referring to spot prices at the Henry Hub, the benchmark supply point in Louisiana) to around $3.00 now – sinking in between to a low of $2.50 in September 2009 – the plummeting value of natural gas represents a decline of over 75% over three years. In fact, prices have been low, roughly around $4.00 per MMBtu, during this timeframe. Thanks to this steep fall, industry participants are pressing the panic button. But it Hasn’t Always Been this Way… It wasn’t long
