Crude prices eased off their high by a couple of dollars as rumors circulated that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi had been shot. US officials denied such reports and the markets showed a marginal improvement after closing mixed on Thursday. Though benchmarks Dow and S&P500 continued to remain in the red, the Nasdaq gained marginal momentum relying on the upward movement of tech stocks. Tension in Libya continued, providing no respite to the economic world. Meanwhile fresh US economic data came in, showing both positive and negative trends. The markets closed mixed as the tech-laden Nasdaq moved up while the Dow and S&P500 still waited to end in the green. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) shed 0.3% to close at 12, 068.50 and the S&P 500 declined 0.1% to end

The latest Facebook offering shows just how willing some investors are to participate in the latest mania, even when another bubble burst not too long ago. Goldman Sachs is offering its clients the chance to participate in a $1.5 billion offering for shares of the social networking website. News reports say the offering values the company at $50 billion. Such a valuation puts Facebook in a very elite group; only 125 companies publicly traded in the U.S. were worth $50 billion or more at start of 2011. The valuation looks even loftier when Facebook’s income statement is considered. Though information is limited, the Wall Street Journal reported that analysts believe revenues totaled approximately $2 billion last year. If that is the case, Facebook is being valued at 25x sales.
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Healthcare Expert Wednesday, January 13, 2010: Issue #1174 Cautiously optimistic. Very cautiously optimistic. That’s how I’d describe the overall mood at this year’s JP Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. While folks are certainly in a better frame of mind than this time last year (when it seemed like we were in the middle of financial Armageddon), they’re still a bit gun-shy. But with the huge stock market rally and partnership/financing deals available again, the tone is more upbeat. As one banker said, “money is flowing into the market again.” These days, the conference is a major event and has become increasingly difficult to get into. Luckily, I’ve got the right credentials to get inside (without having to resort to a White House-style gatecrash) and give you

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Advisory Panelist Did you know that 59 million American adults are obese? That’s 25% of the adults in this country. Not overweight. Not “soft around the middle.” Not, “Yeah, I could probably lose a few pounds.” Obese. I highlighted that alarming statistic in a report I published last week for my small-cap healthcare service, Access. Of course, it’s no surprise that America loves to eat. It’s also no surprise that many Americans eat too much – and often, indulge in food that’s bad for us… It’s obvious that we’ve vaulted from plus size, to king size, to super size. There are even television shows like “The Biggest Loser” focused on the growing problem. And with the healthcare debate still swirling around Washington, it’s a topic that is
