SK Telecom Corp. Ltd. Co. (SKM), the largest wireless carrier of South Korea, is again trying its luck in the nearly saturated but lucrative U.S. wireless market. The company has decided to invest in the LightSquared venture, which is trying to become a U.S. wholesale wireless operator specializing in next-generation (4G) LTE network. LightSquared is promoted by the private equity firm Harbinger Capital Partners. In last July, LightSquared announced that it will establish a nationwide LTE network that can be shared by several wireless and cable operators. The service is expected to start in 2010 and targets 92% of the U.S. subscribers under its network by 2015. LightSquared has already awarded an 8-year $7 billion contract to Nokia Siemens Network, a joint venture between Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Siemens AG

Sprint Nextel (S) has officially wrapped up its acquisition of prepaid wireless reseller Virgin Mobile USA (VM). This follows the approval of the transaction by the shareholders of Virgin Mobile USA, which is a joint-venture between UK’s Virgin Group and Sprint. Virgin Mobile USA offers prepaid mobile services to roughly 5.2 million subscribers in the US. Prior to the acquisition, Sprint held a 13.1% stake in the entity. The Virgin brand, which is primarily targeted at youth culture, is very popular in the US among customers who cannot afford expensive long-term service contracts. Popularity of low-cost prepaid brands has grown as customers are increasingly switching to cheaper alternatives pressured by the recession. Sprint announced its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA for $483 million in July 2009. The deal was approved

Sprint Nextel (S) reported third-quarter 2009 results with net loss per share of 17 cents, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 15 cents and the year-ago loss per share of 11 cents. The third-largest US wireless carrier posted a net loss of $478 million, 47% more than the net loss of $326 million reported a year ago. Sprint remains significantly challenged by the volatile economic backdrop, which has contributed to the sustained decline in the wireless subscriber base and associated revenues. Operating revenue fell 9% year over year to $8 billion due to lower contributions from its wireline and post-paid wireless businesses. The company reported adjusted OIBDA of $1.5 billion for the quarter, down 17% year over year, due to decreased operating revenue partly offset by lower SG&A expenses. Wireless

Sprint Nextel (S), the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, announced the acquisition of its wireless affiliate iPCS Inc. (IPCS), which is expected to end the long legal battle between the two entities. Based in Schaumburg, Illinois, iPCS exclusively markets wireless services under the Sprint brand across 81 markets in several Midwestern states The deal represents the latest in a series of acquisitions of its affiliates by Sprint. Acquisition of iPCS leaves just two remaining affiliates (out of the original ten), Swiftel and Shentel. Both of them are small privately-held operators with limited subscriber base. Under the agreement terms, Sprint will commence a cash tender offer to acquire all outstanding shares of iPCS for $24 per share, representing a 34% premium to iPCS’s closing price on Oct 16. Sprint will make a

Sprint Nextel (S) reportedly received approval from the Federal Trade Commission for its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA (VM). With this antitrust clearance, the company has successfully crossed the first major hurdle in taking over the prepaid wireless reseller. The deal, now subject to consent of Virgin shareholders and other regulatory sanctions, is expected to close in late 2009 or early 2010. Last month, Sprint announced the acquisition for $483 million and committed to retire all outstanding debt of Virgin on a successful closure of the transaction. Sprint currently owns 13.1% stake in Virgin Mobile USA (a joint venture between UK’s Virgin Group and Sprint), which uses the company’s network to offer prepaid wireless services to roughly 5.2 million subscribers in the U.S. Sprint remains significantly challenged by the dismal
