The acquisition will boost the company’s Building Efficiency business as EnergyConnect’s technologies provide real-time pricing information that is used by commercial, institutional and industrial customers to manage their electricity consumption more efficiently. The blending of demand-response services with Johnson Controls’ building efficiency technologies will undoubtedly place the company among the market leaders.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, April 12, 2011 As most people know, the 2009 winter was troublesome for the U.S. automobile industry. A perfect storm of high fuel prices, the global financial mess and the disappearance of consumer confidence struck it dead during that year. In response, vehicle sales plunged to a three-decade low. For a while there, it didn’t even look like the Big Three would survive. Fortunately for Ford (NYSE: F), it had raised $23.5 billion beforehand. So it had enough cash to avoid tapping into the government’s emergency loans or a temporary takeover. Still, the company worried that its competition might fold, taking the teetering supply base down and Ford along with it. Yet CEO Alan Mulally guided it through the icy conditions to safety.

Ford Motor Co. (F) has decided to discontinue its 71-year old Mercury old line due to its lagging sales over the last few years. The company’s CEO, Alan Mulally, had expressed his dissatisfaction about the sales performance of the brand soon after he joined in 2006. However, he had failed to phase out the brand at that time due to a strong opposition from the Ford family. The Mercury brand had been founded by Edsel Ford — son of Henry Ford — in 1939 to market entry-level luxury cars. It is similar to General Motor’s (MTLQQ) Buick and Chrysler’s namesake brand. In 1958, the brand was merged with Ford’s Lincoln division and has since been manufactured under the Lincoln–Mercury division. Mercury saw its heydays in 1978 and then again 1993.

The Indian stock market is booming. Having fallen along with other world markets during last year’s crash, it actually bucked the global trend and was nowhere near testing its multi-year lows. And on Monday, Indian shares hit a 25-month high. India’s stock market returns over the past couple of years have actually beaten most other global markets. And with good reason… While it’s still classed as an emerging market, India’s strength comes from the fact that its internal market is not only huge, but also better insulated than China, Brazil, Russia and South Korea. It operates at its own pace, seemingly oblivious to what happens around it. With a population of over one billion, India has a huge edge over smaller emerging markets because it has the critical mass to

Punch in “that little car in India.” What you’ll see is a long list of stories about the Nano – a car manufactured by Indian automaker, Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM). When the company first launched it back in 2008, it generated a significant buzz. That buzz increased to a roar when the car hit the market last year. And it’s easy to see why… The ultra-compact car is just 10 feet long and five feet wide – perfect for city-dwellers who need to find tight street parking. Because Tata specifically designed the Nano with families in mind, it still has 20% more room than the smallest car on the market

Ford Motor Co. (F) has received a third bid for its Volvo unit from a Swedish consortium, Konsortium Jakob AB. The consortium has been formed on an initiative from the engineers’ trade union at Volvo cars. The consortium has posed a challenge to Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the foremost bidder for Volvo, by submitting a cash bid to Ford. Last week, Ford has received another bid from Crown consortium, a group led by former Ford executives, for its Volvo unit. This consortium is led by Ford’s former director, Michael Dingman, and former executive of both Ford and Chrysler, Shamel Rushwin. In 1999, Ford had acquired the Volvo Car Corporation from Sweden-based Volvo Group for $6.45 billion. However, the company put up the unit for sale in December last

by Sheena Martin, Contributing Editor Monday, December 7, 2009 We all know that most car manufacturers worldwide have suffered dearly. But while others continue to struggle, one company is emerging from the global recession by catering to one of the fastest growing democracies in the world. It’s all taking place in India at Tata Motors Ltd. (NYSE: TTM). Take a look at the company’s share price since March and you can see that the market is very impressed with the company’s ability to recover from a crippling recession in the auto manufacturing sector. From a low of $3.05 on March 2, 2009, it surged back to a 52-week high of $16.01 on December 1 amid strong retail sales and its green initiatives. But Tata has a lot more left in

Tata Motors (TTM) returned to profitability in the second quarter of its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2009, helped by aggressive cost reduction measures and recovery of sales of its Jaguar and Land Rover brands in the U.K. The company posted a net income of Rs.217.8 million ($4.7 million), in sharp contrast to a loss of Rs.9.4 billion ($201.7 million) during the second quarter of last year. Sales volume (including exports) for the quarter grew 17.4% to 158,575 vehicles. Despite this, revenue declined by 9% (8% in dollars) to Rs.218.1 billion ($4.7 billion) due to continued slowdown in prime markets and volatility of exchange rates adversely affecting the company’s exports of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles.
Ford Motor (F) is trying hard to offload its unprofitable Volvo car unit by the end of the year. Finance Chief Lewis Booth recently said that the company had no plans of retaining the unit. Ford only wants to concentrate and strengthen its own in-house brand. In 1999, Ford acquired Volvo Car Corp. from Sweden-based Volvo Group for $6.45 billion. However, the company put up the unit for sale last December in an effort to cut costs and raise cash amidst plunging industry wide auto sales. Ford negotiated the sale with many automakers Incorporatedluding Renault SA and China’s third-largest automaker, Dongfeng Motor Group. So far, China’s Geely Automotive was reportedly the only company to submit a concrete bid, valuing the unit at about $2 billion. However, Geely later denied such
