As per the report, Transocean secured additional work for four of its mid-water rigs, with three of them getting higher rates.
Offshore drilling giant Transocean Ltd. (RIG) reported bleak second quarter 2011 results, hurt by the decline in utilization rates, lower backlog and higher operating costs. Earnings per share, excluding expenses associated with the Macondo well incident, tax charges and loss related to impairment of three standard jackups, came in at 65 cents. The figure fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 77 cents and trailed the year-ago adjusted profit of $1.66. Total quarterly revenues of $2,334 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.7% and were down 5.8% year over year, mainly due to the reduction in contract drilling sales (due to lower utilization and lower average daily revenue), partially offset by contributions from additional drilling management services activity. Transocean’s high-spec floaters contributed approximately 61% to total revenue, while

The specter of another recession haunted investors and dealt a body blow to the markets which crashed to their worst day since the economic crisis of 2008. On Wednesday, just when the Dow looked like ending its longest losing streak of nine days since Jimmy Carter held office, the index plunged over 500 points to record its ninth-steepest decline. The broad sell-off in the market and resulting panic led to the Dow, Standard & Poor 500 (S&P) 500 and the Nasdaq plunging 4.3%, 4.8% and 5.1%, respectively. Each benchmark posted its share of records, though none of these brought any cheer to investors. The Dow settled at 11,383.83, losing 512 points, the steepest such decline since Dec. 1, 2008. However, the 512-point decline was far from the 778-points slide that

Italian oil major Eni SpA (E) announced the start-up of oil production from the Appaloosa field in the deepwaters of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM). This follows the Nikaitchuq field start-up in Alaska earlier this year and strengthens Eni’s hold as a producer in the GoM. The Appaloosa oil field is situated in 2,500 feet deep waters about 60 miles offshore the Louisiana coast southwest of New Orleans. Production started on June 21, using a 20 mile flow line tied back to the Eni operated Corral platform. The well, located within the MC 459 Federal Unit, which includes blocks MC 459, 460 and portions of MC 503 and 504, is presently flowing at a rate of approximately 7,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
In an internal investigation report, drilling contractor Transocean Ltd (RIG) – the owner and operator of Deepwater Horizon oil rig at the heart of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) disaster – has accused British energy giant BP plc (BP) of decisions that led to the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history. As a reminder, on April 20, 2010, offshore driller Transocean’s ultra-deepwater Horizon drilling platform, contracted to BP, sank following an explosion while operating in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana. The incident killed 11 workers and spewed more than 200 million gallons of crude in what is touted as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Subsequently, a moratorium was imposed on offshore drilling at water depths of more than 500 feet in the region,

Finally, investors enjoyed some cheer as the markets broke their six-day losing streak buoyed by positive data on export levels and a shrinking trade deficit. While this report provided optimism about a recovery in the economy, job data once again failed to suggest any improvement. Additionally, experts opine that this is a short-lived technical bounce back and expect the S&P 500 to trace back to its March low of 1,250. The markets finally found a place in the positive zone after ending in the red for six consecutive days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) climbed up 0.6% to settle at 12,124.36. World oil consumption, though, increased by 3.1% to hit 87.382 million B/D. Due to the inclusion of non-oil additives in the consumption figures (especially ethanol) and some unavoidable differences in definitions, consumption always runs higher than production, so don’t read the differences in levels as meaning that world oil inventories fell by over 5 million barrels per day. The differences in the level of change are, however, worth looking at. Changes Over Longer Term Since 2000, world production has risen by 9.6% and world consumption has risen by 14.1%.
On Tuesday, oil prices gained strength after banks upgraded their crude price forecast; sales of new homes recorded their second consecutive monthly gains, and corporate results came in better than expected. However, markets negated all these positives to drop further down for the third-consecutive day as lingering concerns about slowing growth continued to dampen investor sentiment. Markets ended at their lowest level since April 19 with the benchmarks dropping modestly. The Dow Jones Industrial dropped 0.2% to close at 12,356.21. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was down to 1,316.28, after shedding 0.1% and the Nasdaq closed with a loss of 0.5% at 2,746.16.
In its weekly release, Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported an unchanged U.S. rig count (number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the country), as an increase in the number of oil rigs was offset by a fall in the natural gas rig count. Interestingly, there were more rigs drilling for oil than gas for the fifth week in a row. This has happened for the first time since 1995 with companies looking to capitalize on soaring oil prices, which are currently trending at around $98 a barrel. The Baker Hughes rig count, issued since 1944, acts as an important yardstick for drilling contractors such as Transocean Inc. (RIG), Diamond Offshore (DO), Noble Corp. (NE), Pride International ( “>PDE ) , Nabors Industries (NBR), Patterson-UTI

Global events weighed on investor sentiment to drag US indices lower on Monday. While rising concerns about the euro-zone debt situation significantly dampened benchmarks, disappointing manufacturing data from China stepped in to further pressurize the indices amidst the lack of any domestic data. All of the 30 components that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), except one, were in the red and the index declined 1.1% to close at 12,381.26. Only McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE:MCD) was able to climb up among the 30 components in the Dow, moving up 0.2%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) shed 1.2% to finish the day at 1,317.37 and was also below its 50-day moving average since April 19. The index was also at its lowest level since April 19th.
