However, meager gains failed to prevent the Dow and S&P 500 from suffering their worst weekly performance this year. Global economic concerns weighed on investors through the week and their influence carried onto Friday. Moreover, tepid housing data made matters worse on Friday, limiting gains. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) gained 0.3% and closed the day at 13,080.73. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was also up 0.3% and finished Friday’s trading session at 1,397.11. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index edged up 0.1% and settled at 3,067.92.
E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Com (DD) inked a $100 million deal with the Chinese solar energy technology manufacturer Yingli Green Energy (YGE), whereby DuPont will supply its polyvinyl fluoride film and photovoltaic “paste,” which will be used in the production of Yingli’s modules for solar panels. The deal is aimed at accelerating the adoption of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. DuPont’s solar energy materials help to increase efficiency, extend the lifetime of modules and ultimately help in reducing overall system costs to make solar increasingly more competitive with other forms of energy generation. According to industry estimates, over the next five years, 20% average annual growth is expected in solar installations globally.
by Mike Kapsch, Investment U Research Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Since hitting a high of $15.37 in December 2005, the price of natural gas has plunged to its lowest level in over a decade to $2.30. That’s an 85% drop. As Reuters recently reported, “The unrelenting surge in shale gas production and one of the warmest winters on record are driving the natural gas market toward uncharted territory. Soon companies may have to pay to get rid of their gas.” So far, this has been tough news for natural gas drillers and electric utilities. Many drillers are ramping up their oil production, trying to make up for lost income. Chesapeake Energy even cut its gas drilling production in half, which led to a bit of a rally over the past

The chemical industry itself consumes 26% of its own output. Major industrial customers include rubber and plastic products, textiles, apparel, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, and primary metals. The chemical industry has shown rapid growth for more than fifty years. The fastest-growing areas have involved the manufacture of synthetic organic polymers used as plastics, fibers and elastomers. Globally, the chemical industry is mainly concentrating in three areas of the world: Western Europe, North America and Japan. Europe is the largest producer, followed by the U.S. and Japan.
The Obama Administration has set its eyes on developing domestic shale gas (natural gas trapped within dense rock formations) from sources such as the vast Marcellus Shale, which stretches from New York to Virginia. Besides being significantly cheaper than crude oil, reliance on shale gas will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change issues are dominating international forums. The U.S. has committed to reduce carbon emissions by 7% in 2012. Shale gas makes sound economic sense and would ensure cleanliness. It also represents a viable energy strategy vis a vis the stranglehold of OPEC, which accounts for 42% of global oil supplies and 18% of natural gas. Moreover, the substitution of domestic shale gas for coal/imported crude oil has other advantages, such as aiding local industry and employment and addressing balance

In 2007, the company sued the soybean farmer, accusing him of patent infringement for planting and saving seeds containing Monsanto’s genetically altered Roundup Ready technology. As per Bowman, he bought the seeds as part of a mix of commodity seeds. In its court proceedings, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington issued a verdict toward protecting Monsanto’s patented seeds from being sold in a mix of undifferentiated “commodity” seeds. The “commodity” seeds are grown in the farms that use Roundup Ready technology as well as in the farms without the use of such technology. (MON), announced to raise prices for its DeKalb brand of corn seeds in 2012 by an average of 5% to 10% amid the present worldwide food crisis. The price rise reflects higher cost of production for the high-yielding corn genes. These insecticide- producing biotechnology seeds have been depicting improved performance and higher sales of crops for the growers over time. The company anticipates that more and more farmers will shift to the new, higher-yielding seeds rapidly. Higher prices of corn seeds are anticipated to help Monsanto achieve its target of boosting earnings by 13% to 17% a year. In 2011, Monsanto lowered corn seed prices, especially Smartax, after the farmers increased purchases from DuPont Co.’s lower-priced Pioneer Brand. Added to the peril was the

Globally, the chemical industry is mainly concentrated in three areas of the world: Western Europe, North America and Japan. The European community is the largest producer, followed by the U.S. and Japan.
The plastics and chemicals maker Eastman Chemical Co. The deal is expected to be accretive to 2011 earnings per share. The transaction, which includes Sterling’s plasticizer and acetic acid manufacturing assets in Texas City, Texas, is expected to be accretive to Eastman’s full-year 2012 earnings per share in excess of its cost of capital. Eastman plans to renovate and restart Sterling’s currently idled plasticizer manufacturing facility to produce non-phthalate plasticizers. This additional capacity will enable the company’s performance chemicals and intermediates (PCI) segment to serve the growing market demand for non-phthalate alternatives. At present, the two companies are in talks regarding the economic and politically sensitive issues, which were a topic for debate for months. The agreement is anticipated to include a large joint venture following the sale of a minority stake. This might increase Sinochem’s possibilities of marketing Monsanto’s products in China. We also have a disappointing Jobless Claims report this morning, reversing the gains that we have been seeing in this key report. These unfavorable reports will weigh on the market today, reversing the positive momentum of the last few days. Dow will choose from a group of 60 proposals that have been submitted by its various business units. The trade deficit was also smaller than the $44.5 billion consensus expectation. On a year-over-year basis, the total trade deficit was up 19.8% from $32.30 billion a year ago. The trade balance has two major parts: trade in goods and trade in services. America’s problem is always on the goods side; we actually routinely have a small surplus in services. Relative to September, the goods deficit fell to $51.42 billion from $57.09 billion. That is a month-to-month decline of 9.9%. Relative to a year ago, the goods deficit was up 16.9% from $43.98 billion. The Service surplus was down slightly (1.8%) from September

OVERVIEW The chemical industry consists of companies engaged in the processing and refinement of agricultural and industrial chemicals as well as gases. Chemicals are used to make a wide variety of consumer goods, besides being necessary in the agriculture, manufacturing, construction and service industries. The European Union and the US are home to the world’s largest chemical companies. The US chemical industry is divided into four segments — basic chemicals, life sciences, specialty chemicals and consumer products. Many of the larger companies operate in all or most of these segments, while specialized operators are numerous. Basic chemicals or commodity chemicals form the major chunk of the chemical industry. Products here include polymers, plastics, bulk petrochemicals and intermediates, other derivatives and basic industrials, inorganic chemicals and fertilizers.
OUTLOOK After the sharp declines in the last two years, we expect worldwide chemical production (excluding pharmaceuticals) to recover, albeit at a slow rate. At a global level, we currently expect that chemical production will require another couple of years to return to production levels seen before the crisis. In industrialized countries, severe declines in production as a result of the global financial and economic crisis will have longer-lasting effects. The North American chemical production is expected to experience above-average growth in 2010, with domestic demand improving from the key customer industries. Chemical giant BASF is expecting about 10% growth in the U.S. chemical industry on the back of rising demand for exports. We believe aggressive efforts in working capital reductions, supply chain optimization and productivity improvement should yield margin
