The company posted fourth-quarter 2011 operating earnings of $2.14 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.94. However, this was lower than the year-ago quarterly earnings of $2.28 by a margin of 14 cents. The downcast in earnings, year over year, was due to lower government spending on defense.
Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

New Orders for Durable Goods dipped a slight 0.1% in August. That was slightly below the consensus expectations of an increase of 0.1%. The July numbers were revised slightly upwards. It was first reported as an increase of 4.0%, but now they say new orders rose 4.1%. Given the volatile nature of the Durable Good series, the miss and the offsetting upward revision are just about irrelevant. The drop from last month is a bit more significant, but only a bit. While this is an important economic indicator, I don’t think it is telling a particularly significant story with this release. Most of the drop from last month was due to the extremely volatile Transportation Equipment side. More specifically, from the Non-Defense Aircraft component, which is often the case when

Work on the contract will be done by General Dynamics’ wholly owned subsidiary General Dynamics Electric Boat. General Dynamics was initially awarded the contract known as Block III in 2008. That one little detail was a minus sign. In total, new orders were expected to rise by 1.0%, but instead they fell by 1.0%. Excluding transportation equipment, orders fell by 0.6% instead of the expected 0.6% rise. Adding to the disappointment of the report were the revisions to the May data. The total number last month was originally reported as a decline of 0.6% but now it looks like orders fell by 0.8% in May.
Textron Inc. (TXT) posted a narrower GAAP net loss of $63 million, compared to a loss of $209 million in the year-ago quarter. Excluding certain special items, earnings per share came in at 15 cents, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 9 cents derived from 10 covering analysts. However, the company offered a disappointing outlook for 2010 and said that it expects earnings from continuing operations of 30 cents to 50 cents per share, significantly below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 80 cents. Textron also said that it expects revenues in 2010 to reach approximately $10.8 billion with free cash flow of $500 – $550 million.
At first blush, the report on New Orders for Durable Goods was a disappointment. But digging through the details, it is not as bad as it first seems. This report is one where digging through the details is especially important, and just going with the headline total number can be highly misleading. Total new orders for durable goods rose by 0.3% in December, only partially reversing a 0.4% decline in November and a 0.1% decline in October.
Textron (TXT) has flown past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 2 cents per share to register earning per share [EPS] of 12 cents in the third quarter of fiscal 2009. However, it fell far short of the year-ago figure of 85 cents per diluted share. The company also digested a $42 million charge in the quarter (10 cents per share) for its ongoing restructuring program. Revenues cascaded 27% to $2.5 billion in the reported quarter from $3.5 billion in the year-ago quarter. The Cessna segment’s revenues decreased $593 million year-over-year to $825 million, primarily reflecting lower delivery of Citation jets (68 jets compared to 124 in the year-ago quarter).
New orders for durable goods rose 4.9% in July, well above consensus expectations for a 3.2% increase. In addition, the June numbers were revised to a drop of just 1.3% instead of a 2.5% decline. This was the biggest increase in two years. Since aircraft count as durable goods — and a few orders for jumbo jets can really jerk the numbers around — it is important to look at the orders excluding transportation equipment. There the news was good, but not as good. Orders rose 0.8%, just slightly below consensus expectations of a 1.0% rise. However it did mark a thrid straight month of increases, following rises of 2.5% in June and 0.8% in May. Apparently Boeing (BA) had a good month, as orders for transportation equipment jumped 18.4% — more than

As of last Friday, all three major market indices recovered more than 20% from their March 9 lows. Of course, we’ve been here before. Or as Yogi Berra liked to say, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Recall, back in November of 2008 the markets began an impressive run-up, hitting the 20% milestone, too. Then all hell broke loose. As a result, not every market observer, myself included, is completely convinced by the recent move. But I will say this – seven notable differences exist between then and now, leading me to believe this very well could be the start of
