Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) is scheduled to announce its fiscal second-quarter 2012 results on May 22. We witness only one downward movement in analyst estimates in the build-up to the release. Prior-Quarter Synopsis Analog’s first quarter 2012 pro forma earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a couple of cents due to weaker-than-expected revenue and margins. Revenue in the quarter was $648.1 million, down 9.5% sequentially and 11.0% year over year, particularly due to the weakness in the consumer, communications and industrial end markets. However, the automotive segment performed well in the quarter on account of increased use of electronic content in automobiles, growing dollar content per vehicle for Analog and higher sales of vehicles. Gross margin of 63.2% was down both sequentially and year over year, impacted by lower

All except the automotive end market weakened for the company, although consumer was the weakest of all. Shares slumped 2.56% in response.
Programmable Logic Devices (PLD) maker Altera Corporation (ALTR) recently slashed its revenue guidance for the fourth quarter of 2011. Altera now expects revenues in the fourth quarter to decline by 13% to 16% on a sequential basis, compared to the previous guidance of 7% – 11%. The new guidance implies revenues in the range of $438.9 million – $454.6 million, significantly lower than the previous guidance of $465.0 million – $485.9 million. Reasons for Downgrade Altera stated that the revenue outlook has deteriorated across all major vertical markets, including both large and small customers. Only North America is expected to benefit from rising military sales. All other geographies are expected to be weak. Most customers reduced demand due to economic uncertainty, macroeconomic concerns, and lower than planned sales. This is

With the whole world increasingly going mobile, top phone makers such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM) are scrambling to bring smarter devices to the market. In fact, phone makers are touting screen size, resolution, virtual or real QWERTY keyboards, video conferencing, recording and streaming, social networking, office integration and what not to boost sales. While our parents may have considered a phone good if it offered noise-free, good-quality sound, we are more on the lookout for contacts management, social networking integration and media support, while our kids would rather be using the device to listen to music, capture and stream video and play games. Or that is what the phone companies would like us to do. And considering the level of competition in the

Analog Devices’ (ADI) fiscal fourth quarter earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents, or 4.8%. Revenue missed the consensus by 8.2%. Particular weakness in the communications and industrial markets led to weaker-than-expected revenue. This, in turn, impacted margins. The guidance was also below our expectations, but the market appears to have priced in the weakness, given that other analog players, such as Linear Technology Corp (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) also guided below expectations. Therefore, shares did not lose much in after-market trade. Revenue Analog Devices generated revenue of $716.1 million, which was down 5.5% sequentially, 7.0% year over year and just within management’s revenue guidance of $715-755 million (down 0-6% sequentially, down 2-7% year over year).
Rumor has it that Amazon.com (AMZN) will be launching a smartphone late next year. Well, may not be a rumor exactly, since the Citigroup (C) analyst reporting the development mentioned that his supply chain checks suggested that such a device was in fact being developed in collaboration with Foxconn International Holdings. However, the largest contract cellphone maker may not be the one to ultimately make the product for Amazon, which may rely on its tablet maker Hon Hai Precision for the purpose. The phone is expected to use Texas Instruments’ (TXN) OMAP 4 processor and Qualcomm (QCOM) baseband chips. The question that comes to mind is, what could Amazon possibly be thinking? The company is no more a smartphone maker than a tablet maker. So this is not its core

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) plans to eliminate 10% of its workforce or about 1,400 jobs in order to reduce operational costs. This layoff is an attempt by AMD to optimize its cost structure and thereby improve its competitiveness. The workforce reduction is expected to be over by the first quarter of 2012 and will be conducted globally across all its divisions. Along with other unspecified operational changes, the layoffs are expected to save $200 million in 2012. Management is looking to reinvest some of the savings into newer business areas, including chips for devices such as tablet-style computers in emerging markets and Internet-related opportunities (mainly cloud computing). Second Quarter Overview Texas Instruments delivered a decent second quarter, with pro forma earnings per share of 58 cents exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5 cents, or 9.4%. The company reported revenue of $3.46 billion, which was up 1.9% sequentially and at the lower end of the originally guided range of $3.41 billion and $3.69 billion. The sequential increase was driven by strength in Analog and Embedded Processing segments, partially offset by the expected weakness in the company’s Wireless segment.
Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) reported third quarter earnings that were up 15.8% sequentially and down 6.8% year over year, exceeding the Zacks Consensus estimate by 10 cents, or 17.5%. Although TI lowered earnings estimates, the addition of National limited negative estimate revisions. Therefore, overall estimates for the current quarter have remained unchanged while those for the following quarter and fiscal years 2011 and 2012 have gone up a bit. Results were better than the original guidance. However, while share prices jumped 4.04% during the day, in the hope of a strong quarter, they dropped 1.42% after-hours due to the weak guidance. Revenue TI reported revenue of $3.46 billion, which was up 0.2% sequentially, down 7.3% year over year and at the lower end of the originally guided range of$3.4 billion

Stocks have made steady gains in recent days as some of the more exaggerated Europe-centric fears have started easing. There is also a growing realization that the U.S. economy may be able to muddle through without slipping into another recession. Everybody understands that Europe is dealing with serious issues that have the potential of dragging down the global economy. Favorable statements from European leaders in recent days about Greece’s place in the union were helpful in improving sentiment. And the concerted action by global central banks on Thursday to prop up the dollar liquidity of European banks helped soothe concerns about the health of the financial institutions. None of these address the core underlying problems facing the common currency union. But they nevertheless provide enough reassurance that another Lehman-like situation

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

The robust result was primarily attributable to the significant surge in demand for high-end 3G smartphones and tablets. Third Quarter Highlights Total revenue in the reported quarter was $3,623 million, up 34.2% year over year, and ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3,550 million. On a GAAP basis, quarterly net income was $1,035 million or 62 cents per share compared with $767 million or 47 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.
Stocks may find it hard to stay focused on the day’s earnings parade given the continued stalemate in Washington on the debt ceiling issue. We also have a couple of housing and consumer confidence reports coming out after the markets open. But had Washington not been as distracting as it has been lately, corporate earnings would be the most important news of the day. The markets have remained fairly stable thus far even as we get closer to the debt ceiling’s August 2 deadline. With the exception of the gold, no asset class appears to be worried. And this is hardly a sign of complacency. The markets may not be as efficient as some academics believe, but they are smart enough to evaluate America’s financial health.
National Semiconductor Corporation’s (NSM) earnings for the fourth quarter ended May 2011 were 4 cents higher than the Zacks Consensus estimate of 27 cents. National’s revenues were strong, despite the disaster in Japan, enabling the company to exceed the guidance provided on the last earnings call. As a result, the gross margin remained steady and operating margin actually improved slightly. Additionally, the tax rate was again lower, helping the company deliver numbers ahead of expectations. During the quarter, National announced its decision to merge with Texas Instruments (TXN). National generated revenue of $374.1 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, a sequential increase of 8.8% and a year-over-year decline of 6.1%, exceeding the high-end of management’s guided range of $360-370 million (a 5-8% sequential increase). National’s results were encouraging, particularly given

Marvell Technology Group (MRVL) is scheduled to announce its first quarter 2012 results on May 26, 2011, and we see limited revisions in analyst estimates at this point of time. Fourth Quarter Overview Marvell Technology delivered a disappointing fourth quarter with its top and bottom lines missing the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Marvell Technology’s fourth quarter 2011 revenue grew 7.0% from the year-ago quarter, but was below the company’s guidance range. The quarter’s revenue was affected to some extent by seasonal declines in the company’s mobile and wireless businesses and a significant slowdown in PC sales. An increase in expenses led to margin contraction. As a result, earnings per share remained flat year over year at 35 cents. Despite the weak results, management remains upbeat about its existing and newly launched

by Louis Basenese, Chief Investment Strategist, Wall Street Daily Friday, June 3, 2011: Issue #1527 Global merger and acquisitions activity volume just surpassed the $1-trillion mark. Not only that, but the market also hit that milestone six weeks earlier than it did last year. Why should we care? I’ll let National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: NSM) do the talking for me. On April 4, Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) announced it was buying National Semiconductor for $25 a share – a 75 percent premium to the share price at the time. And look what happened… Since nobody invests for sport. The reason to care about an uptick in mergers and acquisitions activity is easy: greed. We’re in the market to make money – pure and simple – and nothing jolts a stock

Just months after Microsoft Corp (MSFT) announced that it would design an operating system based on ARM Holdings’ (ARMH) chip technology, the company showcased its Windows 8 software. The decision marks Microsoft’s divergence from its traditional partner Intel Corp (INTC), which is also fighting its own battle in the mobile computing space. Intel started promoting its trademarked “ultrabook,” which it expects will enable notebook-makers to regain some of the market share it lost to Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPad. The devices are expected to be lighter and just slightly more expensive than Apple’s, while providing greater functionality. Intel executives stated that ultrabooks based on Intel’s new chips would sport an advanced touch screen, start in a few seconds, connect to the Internet almost immediately and have several days of battery life

Leading visual computing technologies and graphic chip manufacturing company, NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) recently declared its intention of acquiring U.K-based data-modem chip manufacturer Icera Inc. for $367 million in cash. This acquisition is expected to enhance the company’s Tegra processing chips, and provide the much-needed competitive edge over its prime competitor Qualcomm Inc., (QCOM), which already provides both processing and modem chips for portable devices. NVIDIA also expects this acquisition to help it enter the competitive baseband or radio chips market, which connect devices to cellular networks. Moreover, the company believes this collaboration will be beneficial for end-users, which is expected to result in a much faster roll out of smartphones in the market, thereby boosting revenue going forward. Once the news of the acquisition broke in the morning, shares of

Microsoft Corp (MSFT) announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement for the acquisition of Skype for $8.5 billion in cash. The boards of directors of Microsoft and Skype have approved the deal and the two companies expect to obtain regulatory approval before year’s end. Skype will operate as a separate business division and its CEO Tony Bates will remain at the helm, reporting directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. A number of companies, including Google Inc (GOOG) and Facebook have been considering the purchase, which is probably the reason for the extremely attractive offer. Skype owners eBay Inc (EBAY) with its 30% share, co-founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis with their 14% stake, and Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) with

We have been watching the semi equipment stocks closely over the last few days and it seems as if our fears have been realized. Over the last five days, shares of KLA-Tencor (KLAC), Novellus Systems (NVLS) and Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) lost 5.9%, 5.9% and 3.8%, respectively. Moreover, the decline was more pronounced after April 7, when Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) lowered its outlook on semiconductor unit growth for 2011, citing concerns related to Japan. We cannot say we are surprised. We have been thinking that the Japan crisis could have a more far-reaching effect on semiconductor manufacturing than immediately met the eye. This is because Japan is not only a significant consumer of semiconductors, but also a significant supplier. What this basically means is that components coming out

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN or “TI”) has announced its intention to acquire National Semiconductor Corp (NSM) for $6.5 billion in cash. Counter-bids look unlikely, given the 78% premium TI is willing to pay that most prospective buyers would shy away from. The transaction is subject to the usual regulatory approvals (in this case across 10 countries). Therefore, it may not close for another six to nine months. We therefore do not expect much variation in estimates for the next few quarters, although estimates for 2012 are likely to go up. There is significant fragmentation in the market and competition is stiff, so regulatory approval is unlikely to be denied. TI intends to operate National as a separate unit under its analog segment, which would then comprise high performance analog (HPA),

Leading analog chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN, or “TI”) reported that two of its fabs in Japan have been impacted by the Tsunami. Share prices had held relatively stable during the day, but dropped off 2.05% after hours when the company announced the damage. The worst affected was TI’s facility in Miho, Japan, which is located roughly 40 miles to the north west of Tokyo. Although the structure of the Miho building remains in tact, TI estimates that the fab’s basic infrastructure systems for delivering chemicals, gases, water and air will need a repair time of around 3 weeks. Manufacturing equipment could also have been impacted, but the non-availability of a continuous power supply makes it hard to gauge the extent of damage. Of the two remaining fabs, Aizu-wakamatsu (150

The board of directors of Qualcomm (QCOM) recently increased the company’s quarterly cash dividend by approximately 13% to 21.5 cents per share on its common stock. The hike in the dividend rate will be effective after the payment of the earlier dividend of 19 cents per share, as announced by the company, on January 14, 2011. The rise in dividend was mainly driven by significant surge in demand for the high-end 3G smartphones and tablets resulting in steady revenue and earnings growth. This is the company’s sixth dividend increase during the last five years. The company has been paying dividends uninterruptedly for the last nine years. The current dividend yield is 1.33%. Qualcomm possesses a strong balance sheet with $19,107 million of cash and marketable securities. The excess cash, available

Optimistic comments from the Federal Reserve on Tuesday helped instill some confidence in the economy and limited the markets from ending at session lows. Benchmarks inched down by a point as Japan’s nuclear crisis started taking its toll, raising concerns of a dip in the global economy. However, experts’ opinion of the Japan crisis being only a short-term drag for the US markets reduced investors’ anxiety to a certain extent. Separately, a state of emergency was declared in Bahrain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) survived a 300 point plunge shortly after the market opened to end at 11.855.42, dropping 1.2% or 137 points. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) closed at 1,281.87 recovering from a 2.7% fall after the market opened and finally managed to shed 1.1%. The

The mass destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami in the third largest economy of the world, Japan, failed to unnerve US markets. Protests in Saudi Arabia also fizzled out letting investors share a cheerful mood. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed at 12,044.40 and gained 0.5% for the day.
As promised, Intel Corp’s (INTC) acquisition of McAfee Inc was completed in the first quarter, following approval by both the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the European Union. The FTC had given its approval earlier, but clearance from the EU was received after Intel assured that the new products created as a result of the acquisition would also function with software from other security companies, such as Symantec Corp (SYMC). McAfee will operate as Intel’s wholly owned subsidiary and its results will be reported under the Software and Services Group. It will continue selling its products and services under the McAfee brand (at least for now). The agreement, which was announced in August last year was completely unexpected, taking both analysts and investors by surprise. Our detailed analysis is available

Marvell Technology Group (MRVL) is scheduled to announce its fourth quarter 2011 results on March 3, 2011, and we see limited revisions in analyst estimates at this point of time.
