Last week, Capital One Financial Corporation (COF) announced a whopping 500% hike in its quarterly cash dividend. It came subsequent to the Federal Reserve’s approval of the company’s capital plan in March. Capital One declared a quarterly cash dividend of 30 cents per share. This dividend will be paid on May 23, to shareholders of record as on May 13. Hence, the annual dividend payable to shareholders comes to $1.20 per share. Moreover, this dividend yields 2.1% on the company’s share price of $58.52 on May 3, 2013. Notably, this is the first time that Capital One hiked its dividend since the financial crisis. In the midst of the recession, the company had slashed its dividend from 37.5 cents per share to 5 cents and maintained the same till Jan

We are maintaining our ‘Neutral’ recommendation on BB&T Corporation (BBT) based on its sound organic growth strategy and stable net interest margin (NIM). However, elevated operating expenses, significant exposure to perilous loans, sluggish economic recovery along with stringent regulatory landscape remain the causes of concern. BB&T is focused on its organic growth strategy, which is evident from the growth in client deposits and increase in net interest income (NII) over the last few quarters along with significant improvement in deposits as well as loans and leases. Further, the company is planning to open about 30 new branches in Texas by the end of 2013. All these are expected to lead to gradual improvement in the top line. Moreover, one of the primary strengths for BB&T is the continued NIM stability.

The efforts to trim the company’s long-term debt stems from the new rules set by the Basel III norms, which do not recognize TruPS that have features of both equity and debt as Tier 1 common equity. The redemption of TruPS involves redemption of Capital securities and Floating Rate Preferred securities. Capital securities worth nearly $4 billion will be redeemed on November 5, 2012 whereas redemption of $10 million worth of Floating rate securities is scheduled for November 15, 2012. BofA stated that the redemption of TruPS would be in the range of 100%–102% of the liquidation amount. Schwab stated that it would redeem all the Fixed to Floating Rate TruPS issued by the Schwab Capital Trust I. The redemption also involves common stock issued by the Schwab Capital Trust I and held by the company. The overall redemption forms part of the company’s plan to redeem all the junior subordinated debt, which underlies the TruPS as well. Schwab’s decision to redeem TruPS follows the announcement of new capital rules by the Federal Reserve earlier this year.
We lowered our recommendation on BB&T Corporation (BBT) to Neutral from Outperform despite the fact that it reported better-than-expected first quarter results. The recommendation was downgraded owing to the company’s ever-increasing operating expenses. BB&T continues to grow in both organic and inorganic front. Overall, the company’s strong liquidity position and steady improvement in capital and profitability ratios are the major positives. Nevertheless, the current protracted economic recovery and various regulatory issues will make it difficult for the company to significantly improve its top line. One of the primary strengths for BB&T is the continued stability in its net interest margin (NIM). Over the last three years, NIM has been improving as a result of lower deposit and borrowing costs. Additionally, though there could be NIM pressure with the shrinkage of

These include the redemption of 7.25% TruPS issued by Fifth Third Capital Trust V. Over the last couple of weeks, banks have been redeeming TruPS since these will no longer qualify for Tier 1 capital ratio calculations beginning 2013. The redemption amount will also include accrued and unpaid distributions until the redemption date arrives. The TruPS redemption will take place on August 15, 2012, with Wilmington Trust Company, a subsidiary of M&T Bank Corporation (MTB), as the paying agent. An announcement by Spain’s autonomous region Valencia’s government that it was seeking financial aid reminded investors of the flagging condition of Europe’s economy. European debt concerns have taken a backseat over the past few days and earnings results hogged the limelight to lift benchmarks higher. However, it quite was the opposite case on Friday. Losses on Friday eroded the Dow’s and Nasdaq’s July gains, but all of the benchmarks maintained their weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) slumped 120.79 points or 0.9% and closed at 12,822.57. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) inched down 1% to finish Friday’s trading session at 1,362.66. Investors were widely speculating about the amount of money companies like Citigroup will be allowed by the Fed to return to their shareholders this year. Notably, Citi has failed to significantly enhance shareholder value following the financial crisis and this somewhat weakened its competitive position. Besides Citi, the three other companies that have failed the stress test this time are Ally Financial Inc., MetLife Inc. (MET) and SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI).
After penalizing the country’s five largest mortgage servicers last month, the Federal Reserve now plans to fine eight other banks for foreclosure abuses. This was stated by Suzanne G. Killian, a senior associate director of the Fed, at a congressional hearing in Brooklyn. The banks that were held responsible for wrongly foreclosing homeowners’ properties include EverBank, The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), HSBC Holdings Plc (HBC), PNC Financial Services Group (PNC), MetLife Inc. (MET), OneWest Bank, SunTrust Banks (STI) and U.S. Bancorp (USB). However, the amounts of penalties have not been disclosed. The nation’s mortgage servicers were under the radar for the alleged used of ‘robo-signers’ ? employees who sign hundreds of documents a day without verifying decisive information like the previously outstanding amounts of borrowers.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) has decided to withdraw its other bank fees related to checking accounts in addition to debit card usage fee. The news should spread cheer among customers as these charges were not part of the company’s regular fee structure. Over the last 10 months, the company was imposing of these fees in various parts of the country to supposedly test their feasibility. The plan was to figure out alternatives to debit interchange fee that resulted in revenue loss. This back step, by chance or choice, comes at a time when the other major U.S. lenders are silently imposing new fees on regular banking activities after the failure of their debit card fees plan. Among the test runs, Chase will stop a $12 monthly checking account fee.

(BAC) has called off its plan to charge a $5 monthly fee on debit card purchases on Tuesday, but only after a hostile response from consumers and lawmakers nationwide. The company was under pressure to drop debit card fee as some of its rival companies including JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) already took similar actions. Debit card fees became an industry trend last month after banks started suffering from revenue losses due to the imposition of the debit interchange fee (proposed by the Durbin Amendment) effective October 1. The new federal rules restricted banks’ ability to charge merchants whenever a card is swiped. Consequently, BofA and its peers were gearing up to charge its debit card users, so as to

This represents SunTrust’s fifth straight quarter of profit after incurring significant losses since mid-2008. This was also substantially better than earnings of 17 cents in the year-ago quarter. Despite the weakness in the wider economy and pressures on the sector, results for the reported quarter benefited from a substantial decline in provision for credit losses, higher interest income and improved credit quality. However, lower non-interest income and higher non-interest expenses were the headwinds. SunTrust’s net income came in at $215 million compared with $178 million in the prior quarter and $153 million in the prior-year quarter. Quarter Details SunTrust’s total revenue on a fully taxable-equivalent basis was $2.2

State Street Corporation (STT) reported third quarter 2011 operating earnings of 96 cents per share, which were significantly ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 88 cents. However, the results were flat sequentially and favorable with the prior-year quarter earnings of 86 cents. State Street’s operating results, however, exclude certain discount accretion related to former conduit assets, restructuring charges related to reduction in staff and merger and integration costs. On a GAAP basis, earnings for the quarter came in at $1.10 per share compared with earnings of $1.00 in the prior quarter and $1.08 in the year-ago quarter. Better-than expected results in the quarter were mainly due State Street’s initiatives to lower expenses and rise in net interest income. Also, the company reported strong capital ratios.
Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Following the footsteps of some of its peers, Bank of America Corporation (BAC) is all set to charge its debit card users, in order to recoup some of the revenue losses that the company would suffer after the debit interchange fee (proposed by the Durbin Amendment) takes effect from October 1. BofA has announced that it would charge customers $5 a month for using the debit card from early next year in certain states. BofA stated that debit card usage fees would be applicable to basic accounts and would be in addition to any other monthly service fees. Further, the company affirmed that only those customers who get their debit cards swiped in any given month would be charged. However, using the card at ATM would not be chargeable.
Yesterday, Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) announced its plan of scraping debit card rewards program for its existing customers, effective October. Previously, in March, Wells Fargo halted the program for its new customers. This is an attempt on Wells Fargo’s part to reduce its losses from the cap on debit-interchange fees, as proposed by the Durbin Amendment.
SunTrust Banks Inc.’s (STI) second quarter earnings came in at 33 cents per share, slightly ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 31 cents. This represents SunTrust’s fourth straight quarter of profit after incurring significant losses since mid 2008. Earnings were also substantially better than the loss of 11 cents in the year-ago quarter. Despite the adverse impact of seasonal and economic factors, results for the reported quarter benefited from a substantial decline in provision for credit losses, a slight improvement in revenue and better credit quality. However, lower non-interest income and higher non-interest expenses were the downsides. SunTrust’s net income came in at $178 millioncompared with $180 million in the prior quarter and $12 million in the prior-year quarter.
Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

New York-based outsourcing service provider Paychex Inc. (PAYX) recently completed the acquisition of recordkeeping and administrative solutions provider, ePlan Services. Financial details of the transaction were not divulged. Post acquisition, ePlan Services will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Paychex and all the employees will be retained. Denver-based ePlan Services serves the financial advisory market with its software tools that automate the administration of 401(k) plans (a retirement plan under which both employees and employers can contribute).
A major recovery in the asset markets, improving balance sheets and declining credit costs promise growth for the U.S. banking sector. Yet, the outlook for the industry remains in question due to several negatives, including asset-quality troubles, the continuation of both residential and commercial real estate loan defaults, weak loan demand, and the impact of tighter regulations and policy changes. After enduring overwhelming recessionary shocks, the U.S. banking industry is now slowly recovering. 2010 can be certainly characterized as a year of reform. Financial support from the U.S. government ultimately transformed to comparative stability during the year. The government had taken several steps, including programs offering capital injections and debt guarantees, to stabilize the financial system. Also, the banks are working hard to address problem credit, primarily in residential and

According to a top Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) watchdog, the Treasury still has the capacity to spend $60 billion of taxpayers’ money for TARP to support housing and other programs, MarketWatch reported today. The program was initiated two years ago to rescue the nation’s financial industry. Considering the success of the program, it should not be a concern if the Treasury drains its TARP account. Moreover, this investment might even earn a decent profit like other investments under TARP. Looking back at a calculation released by the Treasury last month, TARP will finally earn about $23.6 billion by 2013. Considering the effectiveness in easing credit and capital market pressure, restoring confidence in the financial system, and recovering the injected money at a lower-than-expected cost, it can be concluded that

SunTrust Banks Inc.’s (STI) first quarter earnings came in at 22 cents per share, way ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 13 cents. This represents SunTrust’s third straight quarter of profit after incurring significant losses since mid-2008. Earnings were also substantially better than the loss of 46 cents in the year-ago quarter. Results for the reported quarter leave out 14 cents per share non-cash charge related to the redemption of the TARP preferred shares. Considering this one-time charge, earnings came in at 8 cents. Despite the adverse impact of seasonal and cyclical factors, results for the reported quarter benefited from improved top line along with a decline in provision for credit losses and better credit quality. However, higher non-interest expenses were the downside. During the third quarter of 2010,

SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI) said on Wednesday that it has repaid the entire $4.85 billion in bailout money it had received from the government for its participation in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). SunTrust financed its TARP repayment primarily through proceeds from a $1.04 billion stock offering and $1 billion debt offering that it completed last week. The company funded the remaining dues from its available cash. Following the release of the Federal Reserve’s much-awaited stress test results earlier this month, SunTrust received the authorization to raise capital. SunTrustis one of the three banks that repaid the total $7.4 billion of TARP funds on Wednesday. With this repayment, the bank bailout swung into profit. The company has fully repaid its $2.5 billion in outstanding Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds on Wednesday. KeyCorp’s repayment was financed by proceeds from the recent $625 million common equity offerings and $1 billion debt offerings, in addition to other funds from available resources. Following the approval from the Federal Reserve earlier in the month, the company had announced the pricing of its public offerings of 70,621,470 shares of its common stock at a price of $8.85 per share. KeyCorp repurchased all 25,000 shares of its Fixed-Rate Perpetual Preferred Stock, Series B, which were originally issued in December 2008 under TARP’s Capital Purchase Program. This will allow the bailed-out auto and mortgage lender to repay its dues to the Treasury. During the height of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, Ally Financial received more than $17 billion by way of bailout money in several transactions as part of its participation in the government’s $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The U.S. Treasury now owns a 73.8% stake in the company. The Treasury obtained this stake after the company, formerly known as GMAC Inc., almost collapsed. With the IPO, the Treasury will be able redeem its holding in Ally Financial. The move will also take the Treasury a step forward toward achieving the ultimate

Some of the U.S. banks will be notified about the results of the second round of stress tests conducted by the Federal Reserve, the Wall Street Journal reported. This long expected decision is a major milestone for the banking sector, signalling that the notified banks have fully come out of the effects of the financial crisis. This paves the way for these banks to reinstate dividends and buyback shares. Due to the recession, the Fed had put restrictions on increasing banks’ dividends and share buybacks in exchange of the bailout money. Following the repayment of the bailout money, many banks started pressuring the regulators to let them restore their dividends. In January, all 19 banks which were subjected to the stress tests in 2009, had submitted their capital plans to

Following the release of the Federal Reserve’s much-awaited stress test results on Friday, many big banks that were granted the green signal took immediate action to raise their dividends. The Fed allowed America’s strongest banks that have passed the second round of stress tests to operate independently without strict government restrictions that were imposed during the height of financial crisis in 2008. These banks can now increase dividends and buy back shares, both of which were prohibited for the last few years following concerns that banks might not have sufficient capital to counter another financial crisis. The results also brought good tidings for the weaker banks. These were given the consent to raise capital by issuing shares to repay the money they received as part of their participation in the

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the much-awaited results of the stress tests conducted by the Federal Reserve would be out soon. The results will demonstrate if large U.S. banks’ balance sheets are healthy enough to boost dividends. In January, all 19 banks which were subjected to the stress tests in 2009, had submitted their capital plans to the Fed. These banks, including big names such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Citigroup Inc. (C) and Wells Fargo & Company (WFC), need to show that they have adequate capital to address potential losses over the next two years under various scenarios. These are essentially precautionary measures amid the economic recovery. And although banks such as KeyCorp (KEY) and SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI) are also subjected to the stress

On Monday, BB&T Corp.’s (BBT) senior debt and long-term deposit ratings were downgraded by Moody’s Investors Service, the ratings arm of Moody’s Corp. (MCO), as a result of concerns related to the company’s weaker credit profile. Moody’s cut BB&T’s long-term deposit rating to “A1” from “Aa3” and senior debt rating to “A2” from “A1”. The ratings agency also lowered the company’s banking subsidiary’s unsupported bank financial strength rating to “B-” from “B”. Moody’s lowered the ratings in spite of BB&T’s sustained profitability and consolidating capital ratios over the last three quarters. According to the ratings agency, the company faces a number of challenges – shift from real estate to other assets, more reliance on the wholesale funding and credit costs from commercial real estate portfolio – reflecting weaker credit quality.

We are upgrading our recommendation on BB&T Corp. (BBT) to Neutral from Underperform based on its balanced growth structure, continuous improvement in deposit mix and strong net interest margin (NIM). BB&T’s third quarter 2010 adjusted earnings came in at 31 cents, a nickel ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Adjusted earnings for the reported quarter leave out merger-related charges of 1 cent per share. Considering this non-recurring item, earnings per share for the reported quarter were 30 cents compared with 23 cents in the year-ago quarter. The results were primarily supported by improved mortgage banking income, checkcard fees, non-deposit fees and commissions and higher net interest income. However, higher provision for credit losses and increased non-interest expenses were among the negatives. BB&T relies extensively on acquisitions to expand its revenue streams.

(MCO), has lowered the ratings of 10 banks earlier this week on lower expectations for governmental support for these banks.
