A leading player among the global solar companies, Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) has delivered its solar modules to saferay for an 8.5 MW power plant located in Lindenhof near Neubrandenburg in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The photovoltaic system will use 36,000 CS6P-P solar modules manufactured and supplied by Canadian Solar. These modules are of high quality, reliability and have the capacity to produce clean and cheap energy. The project company saferay is about to complete the solar park installation with the plant expected to be ready in December 2011. Recently, in September 2011, saferay completed the Senftenberg II/III 78 MW partial complex in Brandenburg, which is part of the world’s largest 166 MW solar power plant, using modules provided by Canadian Solar. (PLD), a leading industrial real estate investment trust (REIT), has recently fully leased ‘Prologis Tolleson Distribution Center 1’ – a 302,600 square foot warehouse property in Tolleson, Arizona, to an unnamed retailer for an undisclosed amount. The leased facility was earlier acquired in August 2011 for $9.95 million in an all-cash transaction. The lease-up of the distribution facility within a short span of time highlights the inherent quality of the asset portfolio of Prologis and signifies the strong demand of large blocks of industrial space in the Phoenix sub-market. To capitalize on this opportunity, Prologis presently has approximately 3 million square feet of operating assets in Phoenix, as well as a land pool to accommodate approximately 2.5 million square feet of additional development in the region.
A leading provider of semiconductor and solar chips, MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (WFR) recently announced the termination of the solar wafer supply agreement between its Singapore unit and Suntech Power Holding Co. Ltd. (STP). MEMC will receive a handsome $120.0 million from Suntech for the termination. The original deal between MEMC Singapore Pte Ltd. and Suntech, the leading Chinese solar energy company, was struck in 2006. Per this 10-year deal, MEMC was required to supply solar wafers at a predetermined price. As an advance, Suntech deposited a certain security amount and allowed MEMC to take over up to a 4.99% stake in it. However, persistent downturn in polysilicon prices led the companies to amend the contract twice in 2009. Accordingly, prices were cut and volumes were raised. But as further

Suntech Power Holdings Co. (STP) is one of the largest producers of PV solar modules in the world. The company is prudently expanding its revenue base to divergent markets around the globe, along with increasing megawatts shipped. To cater to this rising demand, the company is furiously ramping up its capacity with plans to attain 2.4GW of cell & module and 1.2GW of wafer by the end of 2011. Along with this higher conversion efficiency through its Pluto technology-enabled modules, China’s subsidy program and improving operating efficiencies adds visibility to the story. In light of the above positives we feel the current discounted valuation of the company is unwarranted. Thus we upgrade our recommendation on the company to Outperform. (FSLR) has signed contract volume expansion agreements with seven customers leading to a 380 megawatt (MW) increase in its order backlog for 2011 over previously announced volumes. The expanded contracts are with existing customers and will serve predominantly European markets. The new contracts are in line with First Solar’s plan to add manufacturing capacity in Germany and France to better meet local demand and encourage the development of the market for utility-scale solar electricity. The company generates a lion’s share of its sales from Germany (65% in 2009). First Solar employs more than 4,700 associates worldwide.
For the first time in the industry, IntercontinentalExchange Inc. (ICE) launched the Novation Consent=Confirmation (C=C) initiative through its ICE Link platform on Sept 12, in order to smooth the credit default swap (CDS) processes in the market. Over the past year, regulators had been seeking such an operation that could make automated OTC derivative transaction more cost-effective and efficient while also providing transparency. Finally, ICE Link’s C=C came as the answer for such a system. The C=C service offers a counterparty the option of closing their position or allocating it to another counterparty, also known as “novating” the trade. To attain legal confirmation for these processes, counterparties had to face quite a number of predicaments since such processes were generally prone to single or multiple errors in the trade data.

Suntech Power Holdings Company Ltd. (STP) has been selected to power Taiwan ‘s largest solar power plant. The company will supply solar panels for the new 4.7MW solar plant in Young’an, Kaohsiung, which will nearly double the island’s current installed solar capacity of about 5MW. The plant will be owned and operated by the Taiwan Power Company, and developed by Fortune Electric Company Ltd. Delivery of the 16,640 advanced polycrystalline modules, each with a peak power output of up to 280 watts, will begin in Jun 2010. The system is scheduled to become operational in early 2011. Suntech Power’s entry into Taiwan comes at an opportune moment when the nation aims at raising its renewable energy production capacity by more than 10GW over the next 20 years. In terms of that filtering down to solar stocks, however, the progress is more intermittent. The solar energy sector was one of the bright investment spots in 2007 and 2008, but was conspicuously absent from the big rally of 2009. A closer look reveals that there isn’t actually too much holding the sector back in the United States. And I’ve got five companies aiming to take advantage of this up-and-coming area… From Science Project to Mainstream Power Source… Almost Back in 1954, Daryl Chapin and Calvin Fuller created the first photovoltaic

Hardly surprising, with many Wall Street analysts (yours truly not among them) lambasting the sector for much of the year. What’s more, they also expect the carnage to continue into 2010, with losses predicted for as many as half the world’s solar companies. The analysts’ “thought” process – and I use that term loosely – goes something like this: First, they suggest that a “huge” oversupply of polysilicon (the raw material used to make silicon-based panel assemblies) exists. But this is only partially true, as increasing panel sales are rapidly eating into this oversupply. The analysts’ next
