Suntech Power Holdings Company Ltd. (STP) introduced a new 60 cell multi-crystalline photovoltaic (PV) Module Rooftop Systems targeted towards the Residential and Commercial segments. The new variant of PV module will be marketed under the product name Wd and is lighter than the existing 72 cell module variant of the company. Suntech Power’s new module variant comes with positive peak power tolerance of 0/+5 watts (W), thus guarantying assured power output. The new module variant weighing approximately 20kg is ideal for customers with ample roof space but could not sustain the heavier 72 cell module variant. The company introduced the 60 cell module variant with two power ratings – 220W and 225W. Wuxi, China-based Suntech is a leading solar energy company in the world.
Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) yesterday announced that is has obtained rights to design, install, operate and maintain a 500MW solar power plant system in Baotou, Inner Mongolia — an autonomous region in the northern part of the People’s Republic of China. Canadian Solar got a letter of intent from the Administration Committee of Baotou National Rare Earth Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Canadian Solar is one of the largest solar module producers in the world, with manufacturing based in China. However, the Canadian company generates the majority of its revenues from the European market (58.6% of revenues in Q2’09), while Asia generated only 27.2% over the same period. However, its European topline year-over-year has shrunk by almost 64.5%. To bridge the gap, the company has been actively cultivating Asian markets such

by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Competition – as I used to say to my sales force – has a way of keeping competitors honest. The real beneficiary of a healthy business duel, however, is the customer. Particularly when the competition gets down to price. Nowhere is that more apparent right now than in the solar energy industry. Over the past few weeks, solar panel and module prices have been dropping through the floor. The reason can be summed up in just one word: China. Executing a strategy not unlike the Japanese car companies did back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Chinese solar panel manufacturers are selling solar panels for less than it costs to make them. Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE: STP) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Company, Ltd. (NYSE:YGE) are

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (STP) failed to live up to market expectations of a revival in its fiscal second quarter. Although EPADS of 6 cents during the quarter surpassed the Zacks Consensus EPADS estimate of a penny, this was a far cry from the year-ago EPADS of 31 cents. Also, the quarterly results included a $17.5 million foreign exchange gain on account of the appreciation of the euro versus the dollar. Excluding this impact, the company swallowed a loss per ADS of 5 cents during the quarter. On the revenues front, Suntech witnessed a marginal growth of 1.7% sequentially to $321 million. The growth came through higher shipments leading to volume growth over the first quarter of 2009. Suntech’s dependence on Germany continues, with almost half of its sales coming

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team The forecast for the solar power industry is rather cloudy. On the one hand, we have governments globally trying to give the industry the impetus it needs, through subsidies and incentives, to fulfill its potential and become a mainstream energy source. On the other hand, the fundamentals for the industry are currently far from sunny. But just because there’s cloud cover, doesn’t mean that solar panels don’t make energy. And even though the markets conditions have changed, doesn’t mean we can’t make money here. Let’s take a closer look at the solar sector to see where the best opportunities are for investors. The Global Solar Industry Only last year, it was bright sunny skies for the solar industry. Demand for photovoltaic panels had

In the news this morning, Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) announced that fourth quarter revenues would beat expectations. It’s an unexpected bit of data when many were starting to count the solar sector out – and not for good reason. After our last energy crisis, many alternative energy producers, like solar, were simply forgotten about when gas prices came back down. With the average price per gallon at around $1.96, who could blame them if they expected the same thing to happen? But the interesting thing is that it hasn’t. Trinity Solar follows news from Suntech Power (NYSE: STP), the world’s largest solar module producer, that it expects production to increase – almost 60%. That’s quite the opposite of a drop-off. Granted, there are just as many solar losers, as winners.
