Historically, the growth outlook of alternative energy companies has been inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. In the near term, however, the fortunes of the alternative energy players are undergoing a radical transformation. On one hand, the continuing European debt crisis has led to the U.S. Federal Reserve reducing its growth forecast, raised projections for unemployment and leaning on buying more mortgage debt to tide over a troubled economy. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued it in 2010. In the first nine months of 2011, the economy was affected by unseasonal and harsh weather, heightened uncertainty spawned by the crisis in the Eurozone, a drop in federal defense purchases, and

Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial business unit of Duke Energy Corporation (DUK), will build and operate a new Laurel Hill Windpower Project in Lycoming County, north-central Pennsylvania. Under a 25-year agreement, it will sell the electricity generated from it to Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC). The company already owns and operates the 70-MW North Allegheny Wind power Project in Blair and Cambria counties, Pennsylvania, which was acquired from Gamesa Energy USA in May 2009. Pennsylvania’s second new 69-megawatt (MW) Laurel Hill Windpower Project comprises 30 Siemens wind turbines, each capable of generating 2.3 MW. Laurel Hill is capable enough to generate electricity that will power more than 20,000 homes. In August 2011, Duke Energy Renewables had begun construction of the Laurel Hill Project and is expected to start commercial operation

The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. The recent thaw in oil prices is casting a shadow over this emerging momentum. But even despite the pullback in oil prices, they still remain above historical levels. Nevertheless, we believe that a temporary oil price thaw will do limited, if any, damage to the emerging positive alternative energy narrative. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the projected U.S. refiner crude oil average acquisition cost will rise from $102 per barrel in 2011 to $108 per barrel in 2012. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued the economy in 2010. In the first half of 2011, the

Integrated oil and gas company TOTAL S.A. (TOT) decided to sell most of its downstream assets in the United Kingdom to Rontec Investments LLP for £400 million or $647.4 million. The downstream assets earmarked for sale include TOTAL’s UK retail network, comprising 810 TOTAL-branded service stations, its Butler heating oil business, the associated logistics infrastructure, plus TOTAL’s Channel Islands and Isle of Man businesses. One of the leading independent forecourt groups in the United Kingdom, Snax24, independent principal investment firm, Grovepoint and Investec, an international specialist bank and asset manager joined hands to form the Rontec Investments consortium. The selling of TOTAL’s European assets is in sync with the company’s strategy to downsize its downstream portfolio while giving more emphasis to its Exploration and Production (E&P) operations.
by David Fessler, Investment U’s Monday, May 9, 2011 I haven’t written much about solar recently, and for good reason: There really hasn’t been much to write about. Many U.S. solar panel companies have gone belly-up, like EPV Solar, whose intellectual property was purchased by New Millennium Solar Equipment Corporation. Others, like Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR), have outsourced their manufacturing operations overseas. Even that hasn’t helped this struggling U.S. manufacturer, whose shares are trading for just over a $1. Still others have merged with or been bought out by larger competitors, like Advanced Solar. Running out of money, it was acquired in November of 2009 by Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT). Or OptiSolar, which was acquired for $400 million by First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) in March of 2009. But

The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is directly related to the fortunes of the economy and inversely to the prices of petroleum products. Trends on both fronts appear be favoring the alternative energy industry at present. The U.S. economy has shaken off the negative momentum that appeared to be taking hold in the middle of 2010. The fourth quarter GDP report, despite the subsequent negative revision, is showing the resumption of sustainable economic growth. Importantly, the drivers of economic growth appear to have shifted the more stable consumer spending side. Major economic reports, such as the ISM Indices, leading indicators and consumer confidence are all showing signs of renewed strength. Even the labor market appears to have turned the corner as the weekly jobless claims numbers and the February

And while the economy is in recovery mode, so is our hope for the industry. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, the global economic expansion remains on track. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in its latest release U.S. electricity consumption is expected to rise year-over-year by 4.7% in 2010. Going forward, in fiscal 2011 we expect the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow 3.7% year-over-year. Along with this, a faster decline in the unemployment rate will jack up electricity demand, funneling investor interest in the sector. Also, the outlook for the major emerging

This acquisition cements NRG Energy’s alliance with First Solar, as the latter has recently agreed to assist NRG Energy to develop another solar project in New Mexico. The construction work of the 290 MW Agua Caliente solar project will be completed by 2014. This project will create 400 jobs during the construction process and, once operational, will be the largest photovoltaic solar power plant in the world.
Massachusetts-based Evergreen Solar Inc.’s (ESLR) fortunes look sunnier in England after a panel variant of the company, ES-A series qualified for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) of the United Kingdom’s Department of Energy. The certification is mandatory for solar panels to be used for the Renewables Cash-Back Scheme and therefore, vital for Evergreen Solar. The Renewables Cash-Back Scheme has been active in the UK since April 2010. Per the scheme, homeowners and communities along the coast who install solar panels are even paid for the electricity they generate and consume themselves. Given the fact that the UK has more than 19,000 miles of coastline, the certification is an early Christmas gift for Evergreen Solar. Evergreen Solar’s spotlight on U.K. comes at an opportune moment with The UK Renewable Energy Strategy

OUTLOOK The Alternative Energy industry is going through a recovery after emerging from the global recession and the cascading fall in global crude oil prices. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track. The outlook for the U.S. and key emerging markets remains positive. In the first quarter of fiscal 2010, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.2%, while sale of electricity to the industrial sector, per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Incorporatedreased by 2.7%

SunPower Corp. (SPWRA) recently teamed up with SunRay Renewable Energy to construct a 24MW solar electric power plant in Montalto di Castro, Italy. This project is the first phase of a planned 100MW development that is expected to be fully operational in 2010. This would be Italy’s largest operating solar power plant after completion. Spread over 80 hectares, the Montalto di Castro project is owned by SunRay Renewable Energy. The company has engaged SunPower to design and construct the power plant apart from providing ongoing operations and maintenance services for the project. The project is being financed by a consortium of primary international and Italian. Electricity produced at the plant will find a ready market locally and any surplus will be added to Italy’s national electric grid. SunPower is focused

by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Flying home from our conference in Victoria, and looking out the window of the airplane taking me home, I begin to understand the vast opportunity we have by looking over the rooftops of homes and business parks alike. The thought that jumps to mind is that solar power isn’t going to be “alternative energy” for much longer. In spite of the current economic malaise and market downturn we’re navigating through, solar energy is one of the few bright spots (pun intended) in the alternative energy space. The reason? Continued advances in solar panel technology are resulting in cheaper, more efficient panels. Government subsidies at both the state and federal levels are making the installation of residential solar more compelling than ever. Here’s why solar is

Chinese solar-cell manufacturer JA Solar Holdings Company Ltd. (JASO) bagged two three-year term loans of 620 million RMB ($90.9 million) from the Export-Import Bank of China at below the benchmark interest rate set by the People’s Bank of China. The infusion will strengthen the balance sheet apart from lowering the overall cost of capital of cash-rich JA Solar. The company at the end of the first quarter of 2009 had cash and cash equivalents of $249.2 million, and total credit facility worth $213.7 million as of Mar 31, out of which $76.1 million has been availed.
