OUTLOOK Crude Oil Signs of progress in resolving Europe’s long-running sovereign debt crisis and a tightening global supply picture in view of the geopolitical fallout over Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions have been keeping oil prices at elevated levels. Partly offsetting this favorable view has been high U.S. crude stocks and worries about China’s growth outlook. As such, crude oil’s near-term fundamentals remain mixed, to say the least. The long-term outlook for oil, however, remains favorable given the commodity’s constrained supply picture. In particular, while the Western economies exhibit sluggish growth prospects, global oil consumption is expected to get a boost from continued strength in the major emerging powers like India, China and Brazil that continue to grow at a healthy rate. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which provides

Markets shed early gains to end mixed after Fitch ratings put seven European economies under credit watch negative. The gains were primarily a result of European developments as Italian government won a confidence vote on austerity measures. It was a choppy session for the benchmarks thanks to “quadruple-witching,” which is the expiration of four types of futures contracts. With the possibility of euro nations such as Italy and Spain’s debt ratings being downgraded, benchmarks ended the week sharply lower. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped less than 0.1% to end almost flat at 11,866.93. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was up 0.3% and finished at 1,219.66. Tech-giant Intel also contributed to weak investor confidence after the company projected revenues lower than its earlier projections. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunged 1.3% to close the day at 12,021.39. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) slumped 1.5% to finish the day’s trading at 1,236.47.
by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, October 6, 2011 The Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently released its International Energy Outlook 2011. It’s the EIA’s annual 25-year energy forecast, and it contains important information for investors who are considering an investment in the energy sector. Not surprisingly, liquid oil’s share of world energy consumption is predicted to decrease from 34 percent in 2008 to 29 percent in 2035. The decrease is based on dwindling supplies, which are likely to keep prices high. This will prompt users to switch to alternative fuels whenever possible. As expected, two of the main alternatives expected to flourish in production by 2035 will be petroleum from oil sands and natural gas from shale and other unconventional sources. Alternative Petroleum Production According to the EIA,

Crude Oil The improving economic scene – both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide – and the continued unrest in producing countries had been the main driver of the oil rally, which saw the commodity zoom past the $110 per barrel level earlier this year. However, apprehensions about high U.S. crude stocks, the release of emergency oil supplies from government-held strategic reserves into the world market, and uncertainty over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to less than $100 a barrel. But far too many factors weigh on oil prices to definitively size up each one of them for their respective impact on prices. Some of those factors include OPEC decisions, geostrategic tensions the value of the U.S.

In our opinion, Suncor Energy (SU) is one of the best positioned companies to benefit from the oil price recovery over the next several years. The company’s asset base includes substantial conventional reserves and production at offshore Eastern Canada and in the North Sea, which generate strong margins and should provide free cash flow to fund future oil sands expansion. With a large portfolio of growth opportunities, unique asset base and high return potential in the long run, the company has a competitive edge over its peers. We are also encouraged by Suncor’s improving oil sands operational performance and execution of its cost saving initiatives. The company is also getting back on track following its merger with Petro-Canada. Additionally, given our bullish outlook for the medium-term oil price scenario, we

I like to look for the combination of three inter-related factors in trying to figure out who will post positive surprises, and who will disappoint.
We have upgraded Canada’s biggest energy firm and the largest oil sands outfit Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) to Outperform from Neutral, reflecting the company’s impressive portfolio of growth opportunities, unique asset base and high return potential in the long run. Suncor has significant oil sands and conventional production platform, huge long-lived oil-sands reserves and a robust downstream portfolio. The company’s asset base includes substantial conventional reserves and production at offshore Eastern Canada and in the North Sea, which generate strong margins and should provide free cash flow to fund future oil sands expansion. Embarking on a series of divestitures, Suncor, which competes with other Canadian behemoths like EnCana Corp. (ECA), Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. That is certainly no surprise, as those are the key factors that go into determining the rank. Therefore I wanted to look for firms that would look good if we had a sales-based Zacks Rank, as well as looking good on the “normal” Zacks Rank. I started with all the firms that currently hold the conventional Zacks #1 Rank and a market capitalization above $500 million, and then required that the consensus revenue estimates to have risen by at least

Chances are half of them will get the answer wrong. A surprising number still believe our top source of foreign oil is Saudi Arabia. They’re now number three, supplying the United States with a little more than one million barrels per day (bpd). Mexico is second, at 1.14 million bpd. As you can see from the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) chart below, the leading crude oil supplier to the United States is… Canada. Investing in Canada… America’s Northern Neighbor It sends us just under two million bpd. And there’s money to be made in the Great White North.
by David Fessler, Energy and Infrastructure Specialist Wednesday, February 23, 2011: Issue #1455 First Tunisia… then Egypt… then on to Bahrain… and now Libya. The political uprisings sweeping across the Middle East have provided the storylines of 2011 so far. Why all the unrest? Well, tensions have simmered for years – and the youth of these countries has had enough. For example… 34% of young Algerians are unemployed. 36% of new graduates in Bahrain are jobless. 51% of young people in Libya are looking for something to do. In Yemen, an incredible 64% of the youth have no job prospects. That’s in addition to dwindling resources, especially water. Ominously with Libya, though, Muammar al-Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, said last weekend that, “Rivers of blood will flow. There will be

On a sectoral basis, share prices of energy companies rose for the second consecutive day amid fresh tensions surrounding the Suez and protests in another oil rich country Bahrain. On Wednesday, the Philadelphia oil services index along with some other key indexes showed prices of crude were rising. Shares of Marathon Oil Corp (NYSE:MRO), Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) gained 1.56%, 2.50%, and 1.66% to close at $50.08, $45.17, and $75.52 respectively. The multicenter, placebo-controlled phase II study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of KRN5500 for treatment of neuropathic pain in patients with cancer. Management used the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test to compare treatment differences in median changes from baseline in pain scores recorded by patients in a daily diary. Results show: KRN5500 significantly reduced neuropathic pain when compared to placebo (27% vs. 0%; p = 0.03) when looking at best response to treatment regardless of dose or timing. For the best response within 7 days of last treatment given, the difference was in favor of KRN5500, but

OUTLOOK Crude Oil The improving economic scene, both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide, has been the main driver of the oil rally that saw the commodity breaching the $85 per barrel level earlier this month. However, in recent days, concerns about the European debt crisis and China’s growth outlook have renewed apprehensions about the global growth and energy demand. As a result, oil prices have slumped to a 3-month low. Additionally, high levels of product inventories (gasoline and distillate stocks remain above the upper boundary of the average range for this time of year), along with soaring commercial oil supplies, has further dragged down crude prices, in our view. But way too many factors weigh on oil prices — from OPEC decisions and geostrategic tensions to the

Earnings per share, excluding certain items, came in at 18 Canadian cents (18 US cents), slightly ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 16 US cents. Compared with the corresponding quarter of last year, Suncor’s adjusted earnings per share was down 56.1% (from 41 Canadian cents to 18 Canadian cents), while operating earnings of C$287 million was down from the C$380 million achieved a year ago. The negative comparisons reflect reduced oil sands production on the back of two upgrader fires and an unfavorable exchange rate.
Canada’s Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) announced the start-up of its Syria-based Ebla onshore natural gas project. The C$1.2 billion development, inherited through Suncor’s acquisition of Petro-Canada last year, started selling natural gas into Syria’s domestic market with the commercial launch of the Ebla plant, northwest of Damascus. The commercial gas flow, which was achieved ahead of schedule, within budget and with a strong safety record, follows the successful commissioning and testing of the project’s wells, pipelines and other equipments, approved by the Syrian government. Located in the central part of the North African country, Ebla includes the Ash Shaer and Cherrife development areas, together covering about 300,000 acres (approximately 1,251 square kilometers). The project comprises gas producing wells, a gas gathering and compression station, roughly 80 kilometers of pipeline and

Canada’s Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) has entered into an agreement to sell certain natural gas-heavy assets in west-central Alberta for C$235 million ($230 million) in cash. The name of the buyer was not disclosed. Located at Rosevear and Pine Creek in the Edson/Whitecourt area, about 200 kilometers west of Edmonton, the properties have a current daily production rate of approximately 20.5 million cubic feet of natural gas and 540 barrels of liquids. The transaction is expected to close by the middle of second quarter 2010. For Suncor, the deal is part of the company’s strategy to divest an array of non-core assets (some of which it acquired through its acquisition of Petro-Canada last year) to fund its core oil sands development projects in western Canada.
We are downgrading Suncor Energy (SU) shares to Underperform from Neutral, reflecting its weak near- to medium-term production outlook and the Petro-Canada acquisition-related risks. Recently, the company informed that a fire at its largest oil sands project in Alberta would only be fixed by early April. This will cut Suncor’s production rates during February and March below the company’s earlier guidance. Additionally, post the Petro-Canada acquisition (completed on August 1, 2009), we remain worried about Suncor’s high debt level (approximately C$14 billion) and significant anticipated capital expenditure requirements (C$5.5 billion for 2010). There are also operational and execution risks associated with the integration of Petro-Canada’s predominately conventional assets, which are of a type and in regions where Suncor lacks experience. The current uncertain commodity price environment, vulnerability of the company’s

We are downgrading Suncor Energy (SU) shares to Underperform from Neutral, reflecting its weak near- to medium-term production outlook and the Petro-Canada acquisition-related risks. Recently, the company cut its 2010 targeted oil sands output following an upgrader fire in February. After the Petro-Canada acquisition, we also remain worried about Suncor’s high debt level and significant anticipated capital expenditure requirements. Further, there are operational and execution risks associated with the integration of Petro-Canada’s predominately conventional assets, of a type and in geographies where Suncor lacks experience. These factors, coupled with the current uncertainty in commodity prices, make Suncor a bearish case. This is reflected in our downgrade of the company’s shares. Our $29 price objective reflects a 2010 P/E multiple of 15.2x. Zacks Investment Research

Canada’s Suncor Energy (SU) has entered into an agreement with Houston-based Noble Energy Inc. (NBL) to sell bulk of its Rocky Mountain oil and gas fields for $494 million. The total sold properties hold an estimated 53 million barrels of oil equivalent in proved reserves (45% liquids) and will add about 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent to Noble’s daily production. Suncor acquired the assets through its C$19 billion purchase of Petro-Canada in August last year. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter 2010. For Suncor, the deal with Noble Energy is part of the company’s strategy to divest an array of non-core overseas assets (some of which it acquired through its acquisition of Petro-Canada) to fund its core oil sands development projects in western Canada.
We are initiating coverage on Suncor Energy (SU) with a Neutral recommendation and a target price of $36. Calgary, Alberta-based Suncor is one of the leading Canadian integrated oil and gas companies engaged in crude oil and natural gas production, as well as in refining and marketing. The company’s upstream business is primarily focused on producing synthetic crude oil from Alberta’s oil sands. Suncor’s business can be divided into three segments: Oil Sands, Natural Gas and Energy Marketing & Refining. We like the company for its highly visible production growth profile through its oil sands-focused upstream business. The recent Petro-Canada acquisition has further strengthened Suncor’s resource base by adding new oil sands properties, international assets in the North Sea, North Africa and Latin America, as well as impressive refining capacity.

Suncor Energy (SU) recently resumed the expansion of its St. Clair ethanol plant near Sarnia, Ontario, with completion expected in late 2010 or early 2011. The $120 million construction project is expected to double the plant’s ethanol production capacity from 200 to 400 million liters per year. The project synergies will also extend to the Sarnia-Lambton area with the creation of 350 jobs during construction and 15 new jobs to operate the expanded plant. It will also generate demand for feedstock – approximately 40 million bushels of corn annually – from local farmers. The St. Clair facility is the platform for growth of Suncor’s biofuels portfolio and has contributed to the development of a competitive domestic industry for renewable fuels since 2006. The expansion not only reinforces Suncor’s commitment to

One month after the closure of Suncor Energy’s (SU) merger with Petro-Canada, the combined entity is on course to achieve the planned annual reductions of $300 million in operating costs and $1 billion in capex. Even the company is expecting to exceed the operating and capital efficiency targets going forward leveraging the economies of scale and the integrated supply chain. Suncor Energy merged with Petro-Canada last month to form the largest energy company of Canada. The combined entity, continuing business as Suncor Energy, presently has production capacity of nearly 710 thousand barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, around 7.5 billion BOE of proved and probable reserves and an additional 19 BOE of contingent resources.
