Earlier this week, Rambus Inc. (RMBS) signed a patent licensing agreement with Fern Howard for an undisclosed sum. Alton, Hampshire-based Fern Howard is a recognized producer of energy efficient lighting solutions. Per the terms of the agreement, Fern Howard will obtain Rambus’ patented technology for its advanced lighting products. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. Rambus’ patented innovations include LED edge-lit optical designs, MicroLens light distribution features, high-volume, low-cost light guide panels, and multi-function film manufacturing technologies. These technologies facilitate lighting and display solutions vendors to include advantageous features of LED in each lighting solution at an affordable price.
Technology licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) received an untoward ruling for a lawsuit filed for patent infringement, by a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC). In the initial verdict, the judge mentioned that the plaintiffs did not conduct any breach with Rambus’ patented technologies. However, the final judgment is due in July. In a suit filed in 2010, Rambus complained that a number of its patents have been illegally used by chip makers LSI Corp. (LSI), MediaTek Inc. and STMicroelectronics (STM). This is the second loss in a row for Rambus, which met a similar fate in November 2011. At that time, Rambus received an unfavorable ruling by a California jury on the long-drawn (almost 7 years) antitrust battle with Micron Technology Inc. (MU) and Hynix Semiconductor Inc.
Rambus Inc. (RMBS) signed a patent licensing agreement with MediaTek Inc. for an undisclosed sum, yesterday. Per the terms of the agreement, MediaTek can use Rambus’ patented technology for its integrated circuit products for five years. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. In 2010, Rambus accused MediaTek of unlawfully using its patented inventions. But last Friday, a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC) negated the claims and gave the plaintiff a clean chit. Keeping aside the judge’s final ruling, which is due in July, both companies reportedly announced that they have settled all previous claims mutually. Despite a legal tussle, MediaTek opted for Rambus’ technology. Customers are demanding utmost flexibility in electronic products. As MediaTek is a leading System-on-Chip

We have upgraded our recommendation on Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) to Outperform. Recently, it reported a record high result for the first quarter of fiscal 2012. Net income was up 20% year over year and 33% sequentially, indicating Qualcomm’s operating efficiency. Management is quite confident that it will be able to maintain its current pace of top and bottom line growth for at least the next five years. There are primarily four reasons for this positive outlook: (1) gradual introduction of 4G LTE enabled mobile handsets in the U.S., Japan, and South Korea; (2) massive growth of 3G smartphones in the emerging markets, particularly in China, where the company has a strong foothold; (3) Qualcomm’s growing association with Apple Inc. (AAPL) for its iPhones and iPADs; and (4) a diversified product

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) finally released Google Wallet on September 19, Isis announced this week that a handful of major handset manufacturers are already showing support for its NFC platform. (Isis is a joint mobile payment venture between AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and T-Mobile.) While Isis most likely won’t come online until 2012, it should offer some competition to Google, which is likely to use its recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility to help further push its NFC agenda.
Raytheon Company (RTN) has tested a new 5-pound warhead for its Small Tactical Munition (STM), which is specifically designed to be used by the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The new warhead is manufactured by NammoTalley and is lighter than the current warhead. However, in comparison to the older designed warhead, the new warhead has significantly improved blast-fragment capability that helps Raytheon to reduce the size and weight of STM extensively. Incidentally, Nammo Talley Inc. is a privately run aerospace and defense company that designs, develops and produces propellant-based products in the United States. The STM is a 13-pound guided munition that is approximately 2 feet long. The low weight and small size of STM enables UAS to fly farther, faster and carry more weapons. It also enables weaponization of smaller UAS,

Share prices had held relatively stable during the day, but dropped off 2.05% after hours when the company announced the damage. The worst affected was TI’s facility in Miho, Japan, which is located roughly 40 miles to the north west of Tokyo. Although the structure of the Miho building remains in tact, TI estimates that the fab’s basic infrastructure systems for delivering chemicals, gases, water and air will need a repair time of around 3 weeks. Manufacturing equipment could also have been impacted, but the non-availability of a continuous power supply makes it hard to gauge the extent of damage.
Texas Instruments (TXN) tightened its third-quarter revenue and earnings outlook range but kept the mid-point of that range unchanged, as demand for personal computers and televisions show signs of weakness in a sluggish economy. Although the semiconductor company said the quarter was tracking consistently with its initial expectations, the narrowed outlook was reflective of broader economic issues that plague the semiconductor industry. Intel Corp. (INTC), the industry leader, had warned in late August that a slowdown in demand for consumer PCs in mature markets would eat into its third-quarter sales. The warning had sent a wave of concern through the PC industry as it came barely a month after July’s robust numbers from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel itself. Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, had termed its second-quarter performance

There were a large number of estimate revisions following Texas Instruments, Inc.’s (TXN) very strong first-quarter earnings announced on April 26, 2010. First-Quarter Highlights Texas Instrument’s (henceforth TI in this blog) first-quarter earnings jumped 461.2% from the year-ago quarter. However, given the momentum in the business over the last few quarters, most analysts had already revised their estimates. Consequently, the solid earnings beat the Zacks Consensus by only 3 cents. Robust revenue growth, a better mix of business, cost control and good execution drove the results. All segments contributed to the increase, with the order book swelling again and lead times remaining pushed out beyond the normal 12-week range. The solid quarter brought $710 million of cash into the coffers and prompted management to provide second quarter earnings guidance of

Tony Daltorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, December 22, 2009 Once upon a time, the real mobile phone industry consisted of only two companies: Swedish-based Ericsson ADR (NASDAQ: ERIC) and the Finnish Nokia ADR (NYSE: NOK). These days though, while Ericsson might still lead the sector as the world’s largest mobile network equipment maker, Silicon Valley dominates software innovation. Just take the iPhone from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). Or Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), which continues setting new standards for the industry, most recently with its Android operating system. Together, they’re leaving Ericsson in the dust at a crucial time, right when mobile network equipment manufacturers are facing difficult times as mobile phone operators cut back on capital spending. For instance, during the third quarter of 2009, revenue fell 9.3% at Alcatel-Lucent, 21.2% at

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. For example, the PCs we use, the cars we drive, the phones with which we communicate, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games, and the planes and weapons used to protect us all use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The industry has come a long way since the last downturn, with most of the players streamlining operations and transferring more routine

The technology leader in high definition products and the world’s no. 2 manufacturer of NAND flash memory chips, Toshiba Corp., plans to outsource a part of the production of its next-generation 28-nanometer (nm) system chips. According to industry sources, the chips will be used in a wide range of electronics such as game consoles, digital cameras, flat panel TVs and other electronic gadgets starting in April 2010. To meet demand by that period, Toshiba will have to ramp up production. Its customers include IT giants like Apple (AAPL), which has already purchased $500 million worth flash memory chips from Toshiba. Toshiba currently manufactures chips at its plant in Oita, southern Japan and plans to outsource to expand its production if capacity is insufficient. According to sources, Toshiba is holding discussion

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team The financial downturn and global recession has hit the semiconductor industry hard. Orders for microchips were almost non-existent at the end of 2008 as computers and mobile phones languished unsold on retailers’ shelves. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, global semiconductor sales fell 2.8 percent last year and are expected to fall a further 21.5 percent to $195.6 billion this year. Despite the positive reaction in the stock market to the latest sales figures from Intel (INTC),the world’s biggest chipmaker, the numbers were mixed at best. Intel did enjoy a sales revival driven by consumers buying cheaper, smaller netbooks, but revenues fell in Europe and sales in the key business customer area were weak. Let’s take a closer look at the semiconductor industry
