Earnings Preview 12/16/11 There will only be a handful of firms reporting next week as the third quarter reporting season is almost over. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

St. Jude Medical’s (STJ) Eon Mini spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system has been cleared by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW). The approval enables the Minnesota-based medical devices giant to market the device, claimed to be the world’s smallest, longest-lasting rechargeable neurostimulator, in Japan. Eon Mini is used for treating chronic pain of the trunk, back and/or limbs. The device delivers mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord that interrupt pain signal transmission to the brain, thereby offering relief. Eon Mini was approved for marketing in the U.S. and Europe in 2008. It is now the first rechargeable SCS to be approved for use in Japan. Chronic pain is a debilitating condition which is long lasting or recurring and affects roughly 50 million people in the U.S.

The continued leasing activities show signs of stabilization in the industrial property market fundamentals after a prolonged recession that pushed down the sector. About 108,000 square feet were leased to Steelcase Inc. (SCS), a leading office furniture manufacturing company, in Reynosa in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The lessee will occupy the space at ProLogis Park Pharr Bridge Building Eight, which is at close proximity to the Reynosa International Airport.
