In addition, the reported earnings significantly outpaced the prior-year quarter’s earnings of 32 cents. Better-than-expected quarterly results benefited from higher revenue and lower provision for covered loans. The quarter also witnessed improved credit quality and enhanced capital and profitability ratios. Moreover, accelerating growth in loans and low-cost deposits were also impressive. However, a rise in non-interest expenses was the dampener. Net income available to common shareholders for the quarter was $431 million, jumping 92% from $225 million reported in the prior-year quarter. Quarter in Detail BB&T reported first-quarter revenue of $2.34 billion, up 14.7% year over year.
Basking after an impressive quarter, American Express Co. (AXP) (AmEx) announced its intention of buying back shares worth $5 billion within two years, besides initiating about an 11% hike in its regular dividend to 20 cents from the prior 18 cents. The resolution of a hefty buyback and dividend hike comes after the US Federal Reserve (Fed) passed most of the banks in the annual capital stress-test yesterday, with flying colours. Accordingly, the Fed appeared satisfied about the capital requirement and holding of most of the top banks in the US such as AmEx, JP Morgan Chase &Co. (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (BK), State Street Corp. (STT), BB&T Corp. (BBT), U.S.Bancorp.
Can we really have a rally without the financials? Earnings have been mixed for the financials. Let’s take a deeper look at the players in each segment and see if we can’t come to a consensus as to whether or not a rally can be supported. The Zacks Rank for most of these banks is a #3 Rank (Hold) with only Goldman Sachs (GS) having a Zanks #5 Rank (Strong Sell). Investment Banks The capital markets have been weak, especially with the “IPO window” getting slammed shut around the time that Groupon was looking to make its public offering. Goldman Sachs (GS) beat on the bottom line but missed on the top line and saw revenues decline 30% year over year. The beat was the result of significant cost cutting.

Germany paid the lowest interest rate in its history in a two-year bond auction this morning, even as the country lowered its economic growth outlook for 2012. The World Bank also came out with a lowered growth outlook for the global economy this year, but there is hardly anything newsy there as the markets have been sizing up these growth questions for awhile now. On the domestic economic front, we have the PPI and Industrial Production reports on deck, but the focus today will be on the busy earnings calendar. The most important earnings report this morning is from Goldman Sachs (GS), which came out with an earnings beat, though its revenue numbers missed expectations. Earnings estimates for the Wall Street titan had come down significantly in recent weeks to

With the hiring of 280 more employees in Texas (60 hires) and Florida (220 hires), Bank of America Corporation (BAC) reached the goal to more than double the number of Financial Solution Advisors (FSAs) by the end of this year. Now, more than 1,200 people are working as FSAs across the country in the Merrill Edge Advisory Center. This move bodes well with BofA’s overall strategy to improve solutions and guidance that are being provided to its ‘preferred customers’ with investable assets of $50,000 to $250,000. At present, BofA has nearly 8 million preferred customer accounts with an unmatched insight into their financial needs. Preferred customers usually have investment and banking needs that are quite unique compared with other clients. Some of the top priorities of these preferred clients include

Citigroup Inc. (C) is mulling over retrenching 3,000 workers as part of its cost containment measures, the Wall Street Journal reported following communication with people familiar with the plans. Among total layoffs, Citi plans to slash 900 jobs from its securities and banking division. The move came on the back of turmoil in equity and debt markets. The ongoing economic and market instability has compounded the quandary. Moreover, other cost curtailment measures include shedding of assets at Citi Holdings. In the third quarter of 2011, Citi Holdings revenues decreased 27.0% from the prior-year quarter to $2.8 billion. However, Citi has been relentlessly trying to realign its balance sheet in accordance with the regulatory changes post meltdown to remain afloat. After a careful review of the business, which took into account

However, the results were flat sequentially and favorable with the prior-year quarter earnings of 86 cents. State Street’s operating results, however, exclude certain discount accretion related to former conduit assets, restructuring charges related to reduction in staff and merger and integration costs. On a GAAP basis, earnings for the quarter came in at $1.10 per share compared with earnings of $1.00 in the prior quarter and $1.08 in the year-ago quarter. Better-than expected results in the quarter were mainly due State Street’s initiatives to lower expenses and rise in net interest income. Also, the company reported strong capital ratios.
Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Bank of America Corp. (BAC) has sacked 13 investment bankers in its industrials group, which provides advisory and financing services through two units, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday following communication with two people familiar with the action. The retrenched bankers include managing directors David Iwan and Egan Antill. This explains BofA’s attempt to improve profitability by trimming staff costs amid revenue headwinds resulting from a lackluster economy and stricter capital requirements by regulators. However, the layoffs in the industrials group were not a part of BofA’s ongoing cost-cutting initiative –– Project New BAC. The latest job cuts represent about 5% workforce reduction in the said group. Last week, BofA confirmed its plan to retrench about 30,000 workers under the first phase of Project New BAC. This will reduce BofA’s 288,000 workforce

The bank is expected to cut its expenses by $1.45 billion by the end of 2011. The cost containment measures would include significant layoffs and the amount expected exceeds $1.2 billion of costs cutting announced by the company in July. Since June, Goldman has started cost containment measures through layoffs. During the same period, Goldman announced to lay off 230 workers in New York State due to economic reasons. The layoffs will be executed during the fourth quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012. Goldman’s New York layoffs represent less than 1% of its 35,400 employees as of March 2011. (BAC) confirmed its plan to retrench about 30,000 workers under the first phase of its ongoing cost-cutting initiative –– Project New BAC. This will reduce BofA’s 288,000 work force by 10%. According to the company, many of these layoffs are expected to come through attrition and elimination of unfilled positions. Including this workforce reduction, the full implementation of Phase I of the new program is expected to lop off about $5 billion in annual expenses through 2014. This represents about 18% reduction on the current annual expense level of $27 billion. For a company wading in a $1 trillion problem-loan portfolio, the looming layoff scenario was perhaps foreseen.
On Tuesday, Reuters reported quoting Mr. Jes Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s (JPM) investment banking Chief Executive, that the company has no plans to retrench employees in the near future. During the first half of 2011, JPMorgan recorded compensation expenses of $15.8 million, up 6% from the corresponding prior-year period. However, Mr. Stanley stated that the company has been trying to manage expenditures by lowering other operating expenses rather than cutting jobs. This move is, however, in stark contrast to what the other peers of JPMorgan have been announcing recently. Several banks announced layoffs in July and August to tide over the ever increasing expenses. In order to improve operating efficiency, last month, UBS AG (UBS) declared 3,500 job cuts, Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS) announced trimming of

The ongoing economic and market instability further compounded the quandary. Thousands of additional layoffs could ensue in the upcoming quarters as the company is working on a broader restructuring plan to recover its financial position, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday following communication with BofA employees.
In order to improve profitability amid revenue headwinds due to a weak economy and stricter capital requirements by regulators, Bank of New York Mellon Corp (BK) announced a job cut plan on Wednesday. BNY Mellon is not the first to announce this measure; it has followed in the footsteps of many other large global banks. BNY Mellon said that it will cut about 1,500 jobs, which represents about 3% of its total workforce. The primary intention is to reduce expenses, which have been growing significantly. Though the company is also experiencing revenue growth, the rate of expense growth is higher. The bank has not yet finalized the categories of employees to be retrenched or the areas, but said that it would try to freeze hiring first to minimize job cuts.

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Northern Trust Corporation (NTRS) is on an acquisition spree. The latest acquisition that the company has agreed to is that of Omnium LLC, a leading hedge fund administrator, from Citadel. The acquisition of Omnium, which has around $70 billion in assets under administration, will enhance Northern Trust’s capabilities and create an industry-leading hedge fund administration platform for institutional investors. The deal is subject to regulatory approvalsand customary closing conditions, and is expected to close by the third quarter of 2011. Northern would pay at least $100 million for this acquisition and according to its spokesman, the purchase price could go over $100 million as it would correlate with Omnium’s performance. Omnium will be integrated into Northern Trust’s Corporate & Institutional Services business unit as Northern Trust Hedge Fund Services, LLC.

Net income from continuing operations for the reported quarter leaves out accelerated amortization of the discount on the repurchased preferred shares from the U.S. Treasury of $49 million. BB&T’s results reflected higher net interest margin and lower non-interest expenses. The quarter witnessed improved credit quality, enhanced capital ratios and lower provision expenses. However, a decline in the top line slightly dampened the results. The GAAP net income available to common shareholders for the first quarter was $225 million, up 19.7% from $188 million reported in the comparable period last year. BB&T reported first quarter revenue of $2.0 billion, down 7.1% from the year-ago quarter, driven by lower interest income and fee revenue. The results also compare favorably with the prior quarter earnings of 87 cents and the prior-year quarter earnings of 75 cents. Operating results, however, exclude certain discount accretion related to former conduit assets, restructuring charges related to reduction in staff and merger and integration costs. On a GAAP basis, earnings for the quarter came in at 93 cents per share, compared with earnings of 16 cent in the prior quarter and 99 cents in the year-ago quarter.
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Following the uncomfortable reminder from the S&P yesterday about the nation’s financial health, stocks will likely go back to ‘normal’ behavior today. Helping the market shift its focus is positive earnings reports from two major firms and a better-than-expected housing report. The overall positive tone of the day’s news flow should help stocks claw back some of the losses from Monday. On the busy earnings calendar this morning, we got upbeat reports from two key blue-chip operators, Goldman Sachs (GS) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). We have Intel (INTC) and IBM (IBM) reporting after the close today. Goldman came out ahead on both EPS and revenue, dispelling apprehensions that the Wall Street titan’s fall in the global M&A league tables had minimal impact on earnings. Offsetting the deal-making ‘softness’ was trading strength, which came in much more stronger than expected.
On Monday, Fitch Ratings announced that it has maintained its investment grade ratings on Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) and its core operating subsidiaries. The rating agency stated the company’s significant earnings growth and improving asset quality as the main reasons for the affirmation. Fitch reiterated Capital One’s long-term issuer default rating (IDR) at “A-” and its short term IDR at “F1”. Fitch also confirmed the company’s subordinated debt rating at “BBB+”. Additionally, the rating agency maintained a “Stable” outlook on the company.
On Monday, BB&T Corp.’s (BBT) senior debt and long-term deposit ratings were downgraded by Moody’s Investors Service, the ratings arm of Moody’s Corp. (MCO), as a result of concerns related to the company’s weaker credit profile. Moody’s cut BB&T’s long-term deposit rating to “A1” from “Aa3” and senior debt rating to “A2” from “A1”. The ratings agency also lowered the company’s banking subsidiary’s unsupported bank financial strength rating to “B-” from “B”. Moody’s lowered the ratings in spite of BB&T’s sustained profitability and consolidating capital ratios over the last three quarters. According to the ratings agency, the company faces a number of challenges – shift from real estate to other assets, more reliance on the wholesale funding and credit costs from commercial real estate portfolio – reflecting weaker credit quality.

We are upgrading our recommendation on BB&T Corp. (BBT) to Neutral from Underperform based on its balanced growth structure, continuous improvement in deposit mix and strong net interest margin (NIM). BB&T’s third quarter 2010 adjusted earnings came in at 31 cents, a nickel ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Adjusted earnings for the reported quarter leave out merger-related charges of 1 cent per share. Considering this non-recurring item, earnings per share for the reported quarter were 30 cents compared with 23 cents in the year-ago quarter. The results were primarily supported by improved mortgage banking income, checkcard fees, non-deposit fees and commissions and higher net interest income. However, higher provision for credit losses and increased non-interest expenses were among the negatives. BB&T relies extensively on acquisitions to expand its revenue streams.

Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc. (BR) reported first-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings per share of 10 cents, down from 19 cents in the prior-year quarter and below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 12 cents. The operating results were significantly down from the previous quarter, which according to management was in line with expectations. The drop was mainly due to the implementation of the Penson outsourcing services agreement. Moreover, last quarter’s results had benefited from higher contributions from the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney (“MSSB”) deal. Historically, Broadridge has posted a lackluster first quarter due to seasonality. Revenues Total revenue in the first quarter was $421.4 million, down 3.4% from $438.2 million in the year-ago quarter and below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $454.0 million. (SCHW), a big player in the fast-growing exchange traded fund (ETF) market, does not intend to change its commission-free trading policy on its ETFs, Reuters reported on Tuesday. This commission-free trading along with low expense ratio-based core assets will continue to benefit Schwab over its peers as the popularity of these ETFs will continue to attract more investors. A segment of investors who invest regularly – such as by dollar-cost-averaging – will not have to pay commissions every time they buy. Schwab started offering commission-free ETFs in November 2009.
