The wireless leader Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) is expanding its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks to more cities. The LTE offers mobile broadband download speeds of 5–12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2–5 Mbps. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD), will add 28 new cities to its nationwide LTE network and expand its coverage to the existing 11 markets this week. With this expansion, the company’s coverage will increase to 258 markets, implying more than two-thirds of the U.S. population. This development is in line with Verizon’s target of expanding 4G networks to 400 markets by the end of this year and the entire nationwide 3G footprint by the middle of next year. Verizon Wireless is way ahead of its rivals AT&T Inc.

I’d say an Olympic gold medalist, but she lost her amateur status years ago. When my mom shops, she’s not satisfied unless she’s getting top merchandise for at least 40% off. And like a hunter who can’t wait to brag about the 12-point buck he took, my mother will tell anyone who’ll listen about the $300 sweater she got for $80. But unlike the tales of hunters and fishermen, when it comes to my mom and shopping, the big one doesn’t get away. Everyone loves a bargain. But some people are willing to work harder to get it. Investors are like shoppers. Some will stand in line to buy the latest

The nightmare for RadioShack Corp. (RSH) persists as the company continues with its disappointing performance. The company’s first-quarter 2012 financial results were well below the Zacks Consensus Estimates. The comparable store sales for the company-operated stores and kiosks (stores and kiosks opened at least a year) decreased 4.2% year over year. This is a key retail performance indicator measuring growth from existing sales locations. GAAP net loss from continuing operation, in the first quarter of 2012, was $8 million or a loss of 8 cents per share compared with a net income of $31.4 million or 30 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Quarterly EPS of a loss of 8 cents was nowhere near the Zacks Consensus Estimate of an income of 5 cents. Quarterly net revenue was $1,008.3

(T), the second largest mobile service provider in the U.S., reported first quarter 2012 adjusted earnings of 60 cents per share, surpassing both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and the year-ago earnings by 3 cents. The company made a strong start to the year, with mid-single-digit growth in operating income and earnings. Lower sales of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone during the quarter helped it to cut expenses that resulted in more profits but hurt subscriber growth to some extent. Further, the out performance was attributable to the healthy wireless and wireline businesses. Revenue grew 1.8% year over year to $31.82 billion, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $31.81 billion. Improved performance in the quarter was mainly driven by continued 4G mobile broadband sales, strong wireless network performance and improved

Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) declared weak financial results for the first quarter of 2012, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimates. In the previous quarter, the company’s customer churn rate was 3.3% compared with 3.1% in the prior-year quarter. Even worse is management’s prediction that the second quarter churn rate will be much higher at 4.2% (at par with the second quarter of 2011). The major concern for Leap Wireless is the growing competition in the U.S. low-cost prepaid wireless phone market. Traditionally, the company competes with MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS), Boost Mobile, the prepaid subsidiary of Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), and Tracfone, the prepaid subsidiary of America Movil S.A.B. (AMX). Recently, the two largest nationwide carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. (T) entered the wireless prepaid phone market after the

Subscribers will now have to pay $70.00 per month instead of $60.00 for its unlimited 4G LTE data plan. Further, the carrier has also announced bandwidth throttling to three of its 4G LTE plans and slowed down speed to the 3G level after the usage of 250MB, 2.5GB or 5GB depending upon the plan in order to manage network traffic and reduce bandwidth congestion. Given the massive demand for wireless data services, MetroPCS is practicing bandwidth throttling like many other carriers. In February, AT&T Inc.
The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

The company launched ZTE Fury, an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone at $19.99 after a rebate of $50.00. The USP of the phone not only lies in having an Android operating system but also in its pricing which remains pocket friendly. All this while, Sprint primarily focused on introducing top-end devices, like including Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 and 4S in October last year. These devices have remained accretive for the carrier, generating solid margin gains. But their high subsidies, representing nearly 40% of the device’s cost continues to be a significant headwind going forward.
Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) posted mixed financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011. Though EPS managed to beat the Zacks Consensus Estimates, revenue significantly fell below it. During 2011, Leap wireless restructured its business model through which it is emphasizing on the high ARPU generating smartphone customers, while shedding less profitable wireless broadband subscribers as these users generally place huge load on its network. Management is hopeful regarding its business strategy for future subscriber growth. Nevertheless, precipitous economic volatility in the U.S. is a major concern since the company is primarily dependent on the low-income customers, who are very much susceptible to economic downtrend. Meanwhile, competition in the low-end prepaid wireless services market has become intensely competitive. We therefore reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.
Verizon Communications’ (VZ) proposed $3.9 billion purchase of wireless spectrum is facing a major setback. T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, is urging Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to block the deal citing unfair competition. T-Mobile as a strong foe stated that the purchase would lead to concentration of excess spectrum in the hands of Verizon, which is already the largest U.S. mobile service provider with the maximum number of licenses. The deal would also allow the cross selling of each other’s products and services, and raise concerns among some politicians and consumer advocacy groups. In December last year, Verizon proposed to buy wireless spectrum from a group of cable companies, including Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Bright House Networks for $3.6 billion, and radio-spectrum licenses from the privately

The company has formed a new policy of curtailing data speeds to better manage its data services on its network. For an unlimited plan user through AT&T’s smartphone’s downloading data would now mean a struggle as the company has axed approximately 99% of the data speed in an attempt to limit the “unlimited” services. The company’s new act is expected to upset around 17 million of its customers under the unlimited plan. Complaints have already started pouring in for speed slowdown after using only 1 to 2 gigabytes by customers. However, on the legal front, the company is playing fair as it has not debarred the unlimited

This brings the total iPhone sales closer to Verizon’s targeted 11 million for fiscal 2011. The fourth quarter iPhone sales more than doubled from the prior quarter. Verizon added 2 million iPhones in the last quarter, trailing AT&T’s 2.7 million activations. Even then, Verizon outpaced AT&T in total subscriber gains, on the demand for handsets that run on Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android operating system. Currently, the Telecom industry is focusing on the next-generation technology (i.e. fourth generation [4G]), which is based on Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE has become the life-blood for operators across the world. It is an evolution of GSM and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) standards. Significance Introduced in mid-2009, LTE became a standard technology in the U.S. in 2011. It is the fastest wireless network technology and uses radio spectrum allowing more data transfers with the same bandwidth used by any 3G or other devices. Telecom operators provide Voice Telephony, Data, Internet, Cable and Satellite Television services through either wireless or wireline networks. Future growth of the telecom industry depends on the wireless segment as subscribers are discontinuing landlines and moving quickly to wireless connections. The demand for Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 and 4S is also gaining traction. We believe the purchase of new spectrum will boost Verizon’s capacity to offer services at a much higher speed, thereby driving data revenues. Verizon would acquire the 20 MHz Advanced Wireless Service (AWS) licenses covering 28 million Americans in cities including Boston, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Florida, Phoenix, San Diego and Las Vegas for $315 million.
Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) entered a new network-sharing deal with Clearwire Corporation (CLWR). The new deal, worth $1.6 billion, is an extension of the existing one that was to expire by the end of next year. Sprint buys WiMax wireless capacity from Clearwire and then resells services to its own customers. As per the terms of the new deal, Sprint, which owns a hefty 54% stake in Clearwire, would pay $926 million to use the unlimited WiMax network of the latter for its 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services over the next two years (i.e. 2012 and 2013). The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier would also make prepayments of $350 million for LTE capacity, provided Clearwire meets certain build-out targets by June 2013. Moreover, Sprint would provide additional funding of $347 million,

Make hay while the sun shines is what best describes AT&T‘s (T) current strategy on the smartphone market. Despite the present economic upheaval and loss of exclusivity on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone sales in February this year, the company continues to deliver jaw-dropping smartphone sales figures, thanks to the iPhone frenzy. AT&T recently projected smartphone sales to break the historical mark of 6.1 million and set new records in its ongoing fourth quarter. The company has already sold approximately 6 million smartphone during the last two months and with the gift giving season still on, a new quarterly high seems quite likely. Given the launch of iPhone 4S on October 7, simultaneously by three mega carriers including Sprint (S) and Verizon (VZ), AT&T hit bull’s eye with more than 200,000 pre-orders

The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) deployed its first multi-mode base station in Branchburg, New Jersey. This marks a milestone move in the company’s Network Vision strategy, which serves as a major catalyst in its growth plan. Under the Network Vision strategy announced last year, Sprint will consolidate multiple incompatible networks (CDMA and iDEN) into one platform, supporting multiple technologies (3G and 4G) and spectrum bands (800 MHz, 1.9 GHz, 1.6 GHz and 2.5 GHz). The company expects the full Network Vision deployment to be over by year-end 2013. Moreover, Sprint Nextel would terminate its iDEN network in mid-2013. Further, the company is replacing its iDEN network on CDMA-based phones with a new version of Nextel’s “push-to-talk” feature from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM).
Competition sometimes creates strange bed fellows. Last week, this proverb was proved when Verizon Wireless entered into a spectrum purchase and products resell deal with SpectrumCo. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communicatons Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group plc. (VOD), and SpectrumCo, a consortium of U.S cable giants Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable Inc. But most importantly, does this deal has the ability to transform the U.S. telecom market structure into a duopoly, especially when FCC and Department of Justice are raising several questions regarding the proposed merger of AT&T Inc. The company’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 financial results met the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Amdocs enjoys a strong portfolio of several industry-leading technology integration products for managed services and large transformational projects. Amdocs benefited from the long-term trend toward information technology outsourcing. We believe consolidation of the telecom industry may act as a growth catalyst for the company. Historically, Amdocs is a major beneficiary of the merger among the big U.S. telecom carriers. We also believe the long-term fundamentals of Amdocs remain firm mainly due to the transition of telecom service providers to converged IP solutions. However, in the near term, the company may suffer due to higher expenses for productivity improvement and prolonged global economic volatility. Amdocs recently completed the

While these giants remain eminently solid, yet their outlook is opaque. The deal is under regulatory attack even as AT&T is seeking to divest substantial assets to salvage the takeover. Sprint Nextel Corp. The strategic decision to cut wireless data prices will help Sprint garner market traction as well as compete head to head with market Czars like AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) as both offer $50 per month for 5 GB. Additionally, Sprint’s new offer is aimed at wooing more customers and driving revenues during the peek holiday season. Sprint will also charge less for using extensive data

All eyes are on Europe today, where leaders are expected to announce the much-delayed plan to tackle the common currency’s problems. And while we wait for news out of Europe, the positive tone of this morning’s earnings reports from a number of key companies and the monthly Durable Goods reading should keep the market mood favorable. Last night’s Amazon (AMZN) miss notwithstanding, the overall tone of earnings reports thus far in this reporting cycle in general and this morning in particular has been reassuringly positive. There are still some lingering questions about next year’s earnings expectations, but overall the earnings picture remains strong. This morning’s September Durable Goods report came roughly in-line with expectations on the ‘headline’ basis, but was significantly better than expected on the ‘core’ basis. Apple earned $7.05 in the reported quarter, lagging the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.31. Apple shares declined approximately 7.0% in after hours trading. Earnings per share (EPS) shot up 52.0% from $4.64 reported in the year-ago quarter and were ahead of Apple’s conservative guidance of $5.50. The year-over-year growth was driven by higher revenue in the quarter. However, revenue fell shy of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $29.51 billion. Apple’s fourth-quarter miss was primarily due to lower iPhone sales, which reflects that consumers deferred their purchase based on the rumors surrounding the release of iPhone 5. This negatively impacted the sequential growth, which declined (16.0%) for

Apple Inc. (AAPL) launched its latest iPhone 4S, the fifth edition of its revolutionary smartphone. Though many Apple fans were expecting an iPhone 5, in October, iPhone 4S is likely to keep the company competitive in the smartphone market. iPhone 4S comes with a 3.5 inch high resolution screen (same as the earlier versions) and has its usual black and white casings. One of the key attractions of the new version is the 8 mega pixel camera which has an improved sensitivity light sensor and better lens quality. The camera response time is also better, speeding up the time to click a picture. Moreover, the video capture was upgraded to 1080p HD, which will enhance the video quality. iPhone 4S is also loaded with the new A5 processor (used in

According to a Bloomberg report, AT&T Inc. (T) is seeking to sell some assets or spectrum to rival companies in order to salvage its ambitious $39 billion purchase of Deutsche Telekom’s unit, T-Mobile USA. Earlier in March, AT&T was keen to bring T-Mobile under its fold in a deal that would to be the largest in the wireless industry since 2004. AT&T affirmed that the sale of assets would minimize the merger concerns like unfair competition, higher prices, job losses, lower innovation and investments in the industry. The move would help the company to gain necessary approvals from the government. AT&T’s effort to buy T-Mobile is facing a major roadblock, with the Department of Justice (DoJ) filing an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal a month ago. But it isn’t

Verizon Communications (VZ) recently unveiled its first unlimited prepaid plan for $50.00 a month. The plan would include unlimited voice, text and internet services. Prepaid wireless services remain an emerging business for U.S. telecom carriers, accounting for approximately 20% of the nation’s total wireless subscribers. Over the years, this segment has registered significant growth owing to the economic downturn that has made users wary of long-term contracts and additional cost burdens. As a result, users are always looking forward to prepaid plans that allow maximum cost optimization against post-paid plans. The launch marks Verizon’s foray into unlimited no contract plans which have been largely dominated by rivals like TracFone Wireless, Sprint Nextel (S), MetroPCS Communications (PCS) and Leap Wireless (LEAP).
The Department of Justice (DoJ) has filed a antitrust lawsuit to block AT&T Inc.‘s (T) ambitious $39 billion purchase of Deutsche Telekom’s unit, T-Mobile USA, announced in March. The proposed AT&T and T-Mobile merger is the largest in the wireless industry since 2004. According to the DoJ, the combination of the second and fourth wireless operators will create America’s largest mobile phone company surpassing the present leader, Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD). In addition, the deal, which is still under review by the Federal Communications Commission, will mellow down innovation and investments in the industry and eventually affect customers. Further, the merger would lead to higher prices and stifle competition making AT&T and Verizon Wireless the only two dominant players

We reiterate our long-term Neutral recommendation on Amdocs Ltd. (DOX). Amdocs enjoys a strong portfolio of several industry-leading technology integration products for managed services and large transformational projects. The company benefited from the long-term trend toward information technology outsourcing. We believe consolidation of the telecom industry may act as a major catalyst for the company. Historically, Amdocs remains a major beneficiary of the merger among the big U.S. telecom carriers. We also believe the long-term fundamentals of Amdocs remain firm mainly due to the transition of telecom service providers to converged IP solutions. Amdocs recently completed the acquisition of Bridgewater Systems of Canada, a leading intelligent software developer for converged mobile platform. Bridgewater’s software optimized mobile data growth, reduces network congestion by diverting data traffic to WiFi networks while enabling

AT&T Inc.’s (T) $1.93 billion pending acquisition of spectrum licenses from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) is facing regulatory hurdles. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the buyout of Qualcomm’s wireless spectrumin the lower 700 MHz frequency band and the ambitious $39 billion proposed mega-merger of AT&T and T-Mobile USA hold the same regulatory concerns. Hence, the FCC has combined the investigation and review of both transactions, postponing the completion of the spectrum purchase to the first quarter of 2012 from the second half of the year. The FCC said that the Qualcomm deal as well as theT-Mobile purchase would give additional spectrum rights to AT&T, boosting data services to customers.
