The company has already started selling home base station radios in some select domestic markets, thus beating its closest rival Sprint Nextel (S) that was claiming to become the pioneer in deploying 3G home base stations. The U.S. is likely to undergo a massive wave of 3G femtocell from the end of this year. Sprint began providing 2G CDMA femtocell since 2007. Last January, Verizon Wireless (VZ) launched its first 2G femtocell that does not support 3G EV-DO networks for faster download at home.
AT&T (T), the second largest U.S. wireless carrier by subscriber base, is set to unveil nation’s first 3G femtocell product. The device (called “3G Microcell”) is expected to reach select U.S. markets including Atlanta, San Antonio, Seattle and North Carolina in the next week. The company has been conducting field trials of 3G Microcell in several test markets with nationwide rollout is expected by the end of 2009. Femtocell is a mini cell tower, which connects to the service provider’s network using broadband and is aimed at improving indoor network coverage (as much as 5,000 square feet), providing low-cost unlimited in-home voice calling plan and reducing monthly communication expenditure. Essentially, 2009 is marked as the year of femtocell as leading telecom carriers across the world are aggressively bidding to enter

AT&T (T) has further delayed its acquisition of regional telecom operator Centennial Communications (CYCL) which is now expected to conclude in fourth-quarter 2009. The acquisition was originally set to close by second-quarter 2009 but was delayed to third-quarter 2009 in July 2009. The deal is pending regulatory clearances of the Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission and other closing conditions. AT&T announced its acquisition of Centennial in November 2008 for $2.8 billion in cash and assumed debt. Under the deal term, Centennial’s shareholders are expected to receive $8.50 in cash for every share they own, equating to approximately $944 million. The acquisition was unanimously approved by Centennial’s shareholders in February 2009. Consolidation among the top-tier US carriers has become a widely used strategy in recent times to stay competitive

However, the more stable macro economic environment helped it deliver sequential growth, although year over year comparisons have been weak. Revenue of $164.8 million was down 34.9% year over year but increased 14.4% sequentially and beat the Zacks Consensus estimate of $156.0 million. Revenue for the quarter included $139.9 million in product revenue, which was down 37.4% from the year-ago period, and $24.9 million in services revenue, down 15.8% year over year. Ciena narrowed its non-GAAP (excluding one-time and non-cash items) net loss for the quarter to 5 cents from a net loss of 25 cents in the previous quarter. This is the company’s second price cut on the popular handset. A customer buying a BlackBerry Storm will also get a second BlackBerry handset (equal or same value) for free. Verizon had slashed price of the smartphone to $99.99 in July, representing a 50% discount on the $200 launch price. BlackBerry Storm is marketed by Verizon through an exclusive distribution agreement with Research In Motion (RIMM). The handset was launched in November last year as the first touchscreen phone in the BlackBerry series. BlackBerry Storm was originally positioned as an alternative to Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone.
Bell Canada, the wireless subsidiary of BCE Inc (BCE), is set to launch Palm Inc’s (PALM) Pre touch-screen smartphone today in Canada. The highly-anticipated smartphone will be available at Bell Mobility retail stores at a price of $199.95 on a three-year service contract ($599.95 without contract). Palm Pre entered the US market in June 2009 on Sprint Nextel’s (S) network. Since its launch, the handset has generated strong market response with around 90,000 to 100,000 units sold in the first week. Bell Canada continues to experience decline in wireless revenue per user due to lower customer usage amid a weak economy and intense price war which forces customers to opt for cheaper price plans offered by competition. Additionally, wireless subscriber growth has slowed due to higher churn (customer switch) while

Sprint Nextel (S) reportedly received approval from the Federal Trade Commission for its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA (VM). With this antitrust clearance, the company has successfully crossed the first major hurdle in taking over the prepaid wireless reseller. The deal, now subject to consent of Virgin shareholders and other regulatory sanctions, is expected to close in late 2009 or early 2010. Last month, Sprint announced the acquisition for $483 million and committed to retire all outstanding debt of Virgin on a successful closure of the transaction. Sprint currently owns 13.1% stake in Virgin Mobile USA (a joint venture between UK’s Virgin Group and Sprint), which uses the company’s network to offer prepaid wireless services to roughly 5.2 million subscribers in the U.S. Sprint remains significantly challenged by the dismal

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will hold a meeting on Aug 27 to assess business practices in the U.S. wireless market. The telecom regulator will review various key aspects of the wireless industry including the competitive scenario, factors that stimulate innovation and investment and means to protect consumers from unfair practices. A major issue that will draw attention is the exclusive handset agreements between the Tier-1 US wireless operators and manufacturers. The US antitrust regulators have reportedly initiated legal proceedings to examine whether large national carriers are involved in anticompetitive practices and abusing their market power by unduly restricting services through exclusive distribution agreements with handset vendors. Exclusive handset agreements, which allow carriers to sell popular handsets at subsidized prices to attract customers is a common practice in the wireless

The highly anticipated handset will feature in more than 4,000 RadioShack Corp. (RSH) stores. This is T-Mobile’s latest effort to counter strong competition from its peers in the US smartphone market. Driven by the newly launched myTouch 3G, the company will be better positioned to lure more users into its 3G network. T-Mobile myTouch 3G represents the follow-up to the G1 android phone which the company launched in October last year. Unlike G1, which has a physical keypad, the new handset is a full touch screen smartphone, powered by Google Inc.’s (GOOG) revolutionary android software. T-Mobile G1 generated healthy customer response and the company has already sold over 1 million phones. However,

The Denver-based telecom operator has reportedly started to circulate a 60-day notice to its susbsribers to migrate to alternative service providers. Customers can switch networks without paying any contract termination fees while retaining there existing contact numbers. Since 2004, Qwest has been marketing Sprint Nextel’s (S) products and services under its own brand by operating as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on Sprint’s CDMA wireless network and recognized revenue on gross basis. However, the company ended its partnership with Sprint (effective February 2009) and entered into a five-year agreement with Verizon (VZ) in May 2008.
The manufacturing build up in China for the consumer electronics (CE) 2009 Xmas season has started. Inventory drawdown from last year had an impact in the fourth quarter 2009 and the first quarter of this year so product volume in the major areas was down year to year. However, it appears that the worst is over as demand for computers and Flat Panel Display TVs is showing more strength than would be expected on a seasonal basis. But the problems of the worldwide recession had caused some companies to reduce production and some shortages will occur over the next few months.
