There are several factors that influence the decision of selecting an ETF for investment. Such factors include the past performance, holdings, sector exposure and concentration. Beyond these examples, expenses can also play an important role in the decision making process as well. The expense ratio of an asset fund refers to the total percentage of fund assets that are taken on a yearly basis to pay for administrative, management, advertising and all other costs that go into running an ETF. While these ratios are much smaller for ETFs than they are for mutual funds on average, investors should note that expenses still play a crucial role in determining the best fund in a segment. Furthermore, while many products may appear similar on the surface—with similar industry, holdings, and market cap

For more Voice of the People, visit http://at.zacks.com/?id=5851 Featured Post Markets Await the Earnings Blitz The markets are hovering slightly higher on the day, somewhat of a usual sight as the Federal Reserve continues their propping techniques. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is trading at $118.09, +0.39 (+0.33%) as the Dollar has fallen off the highs of the day. The weak Dollar policy is the main way the Federal Reserve is able to keep the markets afloat. Print money, pump it into the system, the Dollar drops, lifting the markets higher. This creates a fabricated wealth effect as equities and commodities increase in price to maintain their real value. The

As gold sets new highs, it would only be natural to assume that profit forecasts for gold mining companies would be soaring too. Surprisingly, profit forecasts are not jumping. Though some brokerage analysts have raised their full-year projections in recent weeks, the Zacks Consensus Estimate is not moving higher for most gold miners. Rather, it is essentially unchanged for Barrick Gold (ABX), Eldorado (EGO), Goldcorp (GG) and most of their peers. Where are we seeing increases are for companies that are significantly dependant on other metals, such as copper or silver. For example, the 2009 Zacks Consensus Estimate for Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has risen 67 cents over the past 30 days to $3.79 per share. (This morning, FCX reported third-quarter profits of $2.07 per share, topping forecasts for $1.14 per share).

by Mark Skousen, Advisory Panelist “The overwhelming majority of economic theories, market forecasts, trading strategies, investment systems, hot tips and sure-fire speculations never pan out.” ~ Alexander Green In the August 14 Investment U issue, Alexander Green urged you to stick with the tried-and-true method of fundamental analysis. He did so using this mantra: “There is only one thing that dictates where a stock will go: earnings.” I agree that earnings are the ultimate determinant of stock prices in the long run. But that’s not the only way to gauge where a stock is headed next. I firmly believe that technical analysis – volume, trading patterns and historical trends – can enhance your returns tremendously and can keep you out of trouble in many cases. Here’s why… The Problem with
