The company considers this to be a cost effective way to increase generation without building a new plant. Once the deal is finalized, Entergy Mississippi plans to invest in upgrading the acquired plants, taking the total cost of acquisition to $246 million. If approved by the regulatory authorities Entergy expects the deal to close in mid 2012. However, that is the output not just of the nation’s factories, but of its mines and utilities as well. Hotter-than-normal weather drove a big increase in utility output that distorted the figures. The output of the nation’s factories fell by 0.4% for the month, but is still 8.3% above year-ago levels. The total industrial production index has been up every month but one since last year. The 0.1% increase this month is a major slowdown from the 1.3% gain posted in May and is also below the 0.3% increase in April, and is the worst showing since the unchanged reading in February, which was at least partially due to the blizzards

The Southern Company is the premier energy company serving the Southeast U.S. It remains a leader in power plant productivity, cost control (operating and construction), and technological innovation. Security at Southern comes with a regular dividend payment pattern and scope for capital appreciation. However, with more than 30% of the company’s total retail sales coming from industrial customers, a sluggish economy severely affects the fortunes of Southern, compared to other utilities that are less dependent on industry. This will continue to hamper the company’s results during the next few quarters, as industrial sales still remain weak. As such, we do not anticipate a significant upside in the near future and

American Electric Power Company Inc. (AEP) is set to receive $334 million from the U.S. Energy Department to develop a commercial scale project that will capture carbon from its Mountaineer coal fired plant in West Virginia and then inject the gases underground. The grant is part of the $979 million to be awarded by the U.S. Energy Department to three projects aimed at developing technology to trap and store carbon emissions from coal plants. The other two companies to receive grants are Southern Company Services Inc. (SO), and Summit Texas Clean Energy LLC. The money will go toward retrofitting existing coal-fired power plants owned by American Electric Power, Southern Co. and Summit Texas Clean Energy to capture and store carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas linked to climate change.
Last week, Southern Power – a subsidiary of electric utility company Southern Co. (SO) – announced its decision to build one of the country’s largest biomass power plants in eastern Sacul, Texas. Construction of the 100-megawatt plant is slated to commence this fall, with commercial operation projected for the summer of 2012. As part of the project, Southern Power has agreed to acquire the Nacogdoches Power LLC biomass project from American Renewables LLC, a developer and operator of clean energy facilities utilizing biomass materials as fuels. The power plant’s output has already been committed through a 20-year power purchase agreement with Austin Energy, the municipal utility owned by and serving Austin, Texas. The plant, to be built over 165 acres, will use about 1 million tons of biomass materials (including

Southern Co. (SO) yesterday said that it has agreed with a Chinese utility for the first commercial use of the firm’s proprietary new low-emission coal-based electricity production. The technology – known as the Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG) – is an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology that produces electricity with lower emissions than traditional coal power plants. It converts coal to synthetic gas, from which pollutants can be removed before being burned in a combustion turbine to produce electricity. The technology can also be used with lower grades of coals that are plentiful in China. TRIG has been developed at an Alabama research facility by Southern Co., in collaboration with KBR Inc. (KBR) and other partners, which include the U.S. Department of Energy. Per the terms of the agreement, the
