by Louise Harris, Investment U Research Team The entertainment world is changing, and companies in the business know that all too well… hence the reason why The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) just announced its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: MVL) Comic book fans might hate the move, but in order to survive in today’s climate, Disney has to look outside the box office to the whole entertainment package. Gone are the days when movies made all their money at the box office. And with DVD sales shrinking, Hollywood has no choice but to bring in more revenue by delving into toys, videogames, clothing, rides, digital copies of movies and Internet streaming. Naturally, Disney hopes to milk the merger for all its worth, exploiting Marvel’s 5,000 characters across the

Market research company NPD Group recently came out with data on the gaming industry which indicates that sales of gaming software declined by 15% in August 2009 compared to the same period last year. This was historically one of the weakest periods on record for the gaming industry. The industry witnessed a slump in sales for a six-month period as well, which makes it even more difficult to assess whether the gaming industry will be able to register growth this year. The overall sales of the gaming sector for year to date 2009 declined 14% to $9.07 billion. On the other hand, “Madden NFL 10″ underperformed and sales declined compared to last year. Amid a buzz of publicity, yesterday was the day that many Beatles fans had eagerly waited for, with the release of a new video game in the band’s name – “The Beatles: Rock Band.” If you’re not familiar with the “Rock Band” concept, it’s a bit like karaoke, except you play music in addition to singing. Gamers follow along with their favorite musicians/songs, using an electronic drum kit and guitar, and sing the songs, too. The game is enormously popular, having generated over $1 billion in revenue. And gamers can download individual songs, albums, or catalogs of groups like AC/DC, The Who and The Grateful Dead. So far,

The Nintendo Wii has been a runaway hit with the introduction of the motion-sensing controller. Recently, Sony Corporation has come up with an enhanced version of the Playstation 3 and reduced the price of the product by $100. This move by Sony had imposed pressure on Microsoft and Nintendo to reduce prices of their gaming consoles and thereby set a price decline trend in the whole gaming space. This apart, the new version of the Playstation 3 came with some enhanced features Incorporatedluding high definition graphics and Blu-Ray compatibility. This is expected to give some competition to Nintendo’s Wii. Following Sony, Microsoft also cut the

As per consumer perception, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Research In Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry are ruling the smartphone market. So this is a cause of concern for Nokia (NOK), as the company is slightly lagging in the smartphone segment. Although Nokia management claims that it holds the substantial share of the smartphone market, we believe that consumers’ choices are tilted toward iPhones and BlackBerrys. On the one hand, most tech enthusiast wants to own the iPhone, while on the other hand BlackBerry is ruling the corporate segment. So Nokia’s N97, with its enhanced features and competitive pricing, is basically trying to catch up with this competition. Technology research firm Gartner projected that the smartphone category grew by 27% in the second quarter, although there is a 6.1% decline in the

Microsoft’s (MSFT) domination of the web browser space is largely attributable to its strategy of bundling the Internet Explorer with its operating system. Lithium ion batteries are in the evolution stage and the fastest growing secondary battery type in the market today. The lithium ion polymer (cobalt, manganese or phosphate) offers high energy density at low weights, which is the primary reason for its growing adoption in notebooks, cell phones and cameras. As the target market continues to expand, the batteries are now being used in automotive, industrial and power line applications as well. One of the most attractive features of the MAX11080 is that up to 31 devices can be daisy-chained together to monitor up to 372 battery cells, reducing power consumption by 10X and battery management costs by up to

An investigation has been launched by U.S. International Trade Commission, on several NAND flash memory chip making companies. A complaint filed in July by West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania-based BTG International prompted ITC to initiate this investigation against companies like Samsung (SSNLF), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Research In Motion (RIMM), Dell Inc. (DELL), Sony Corp. (SNE), PNY Technologies and Transcend Information. The complaint filed by BTG states that chips used by Apple, Research In Motion, Samsung and others violate the patents that the company holds on the NAND flash memory chips. BTG has requested ITC to ban Samsung from using the patented chips and on products using the Samsung chips to be shipped to the U.S. This apart, BTG asked ITC to issue a cease and desist order on any of the companies’

Nintendo‘s Wii (NTDOY) and Microsoft‘s (MSFT) Xbox 360 have always imposed tough challenges for Sony’s (SNE) Playstation 3. These three are the most well-known products in the gaming space. But recently Sony came up with an enhanced version of the Playstation 3, and reduced the price of the product by $100. Previously, with delays in the launch and lesser volume of production of PlayStation game console, Sony lagged behind the competition, which has resulted in the loss of market share, and we have been expecting a price cut of its Playstation 3, as a means of stimulating sales. This move by Sony will impose some pressure on Microsoft and Nintendo, to reduce prices of their gaming consoles and thereby set a price decline trend in the whole gaming space. This

As per a recent report, the prices of 32-inch LCD TV panels are witnessing an increase. A 32-inch LCD panel is now priced at around $215, compared to $180 in the middle of June. The rise in price can be attributed to the shortage of a specific type of glass required for the panels, coupled with excess demand from Chinese manufacturers. This is expected to negatively impact LCD TV manufacturers, such as Sony Corporation (SNE), who will incur higher costs for their LCD panels, but will be unable to pass it on to the end customers. This is mainly because of sluggish consumer spending Incorporatedreasing prices and the global economic downturn. We expect Sony to be among the worst affected, since the company’s LCD FPTV sets are already sold at

Hard times seem far from over for Dell (DELL). The company’s Chairman Michael Dell and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Rollins are encountering problems on all fronts. Trouble started with the Sony (SNE) laptop battery fiasco back in 2006, which prompted the company to recall over four million units. More recently, management decided to terminate its agreement with Intel (INTC) and use Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chips instead. We believe this could impair consumer confidence, especially since rumblings of customer dissatisfaction are getting louder. Further, one of its most successful business strategies is also not working well. Dell used to attract clients by displaying cheap products on the company website. Customers browsing the website would end up spending an additional $2500 on PC accessories. This scenario is changing rapidly since PCs
