The awful news out of Japan just seems to keep getting worse. There are now four reactors that are in trouble and significant (although outside the gates of the plant, not immediately dangerous) levels of radiation have been released into the atmosphere. That has severely strained the country’s electrical system (along with other damaged generating and transmission facilities), and there have been rolling blackouts across the country. Most of the factories in the country have been shut down, either due to direct damage or to save electricity. Clearly that is going to be a massive hit to the economy, and first quarter growth there is going to be negative. By how much is really anybody’s guess at this point. The amount of direct damage is probably on the order of

OUTLOOK Like everyone else, the Alternative Energy industry was hit hard by the Great Recession and essentially remains in a recovery mode. And while stock prices of alternative energy companies have recovered from their lows, valuations still remain quite attractive by historical standards. Overall industry fundamentals are expected to continue the improving trend into the second half of 2010 and beyond. Notwithstanding current concerns about the near-term the economic outlook, the improving economic scene — both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide — should help the industry’s recovery process along. Overall, results from alternative energy companies in the second half of 2010 are expected to be a significant improvement over the year-earlier levels. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the

SunPower Corporation (SPWRA) was selected by six of the 17 university teams participating in Solar Decathlon Europe, to be held at Madrid in June 2010. The Solar Decathlon is one of the world’s most prestigious solar home-building competitions. SunPower generated 53% of its revenue from European customers in fiscal 2009. The six teams will use SunPower’s solar panels to power homes the students have designed, and are building for the competition. SunPower panels were used by the teams, which stood first in the last three Solar Decathlon competitions held in the U.S. The Solar Decathlon Europe, organized by the Spanish Ministry of Housing, is modeled after the Solar Decathlon that is held by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. every two years. In this first European competition, decathletes will

Global leaders have recently convened in Copenhagen to discuss one of the hottest topics in the world, climate change. Granted, it didn’t exactly go off without a hitch but putting that kind of political firepower in one place means it’s a big deal. Now, whether you scrapped your car and bike to work everyday or continue to pump diesel into your SUV, is irrelevant. Smart cars, renewable energy, carbon footprint and many other buzz words have been scattered across headlines for the past few years. While these are far from new concepts, the urgency seems to be at its peak. The bottom line is that the green movement has produced a plethora of investing opportunities. So Where is the Green Just about every aspect of the “green movement” around the
