by Marc Lichtenfeld, Senior Analyst, Investment U Wednesday, May 11, 2011: Issue #1510 Two weeks ago, with silver trading near $48, I told you that it was time to protect your silver profits. I didn’t recommend selling silver or abandoning it altogether. Instead, I suggested buying some puts to lock in profits after silver had risen roughly 180 percent in the past year. Despite this reasonable advice, the silver bugs were all over me.
Materials stocks took the markets modestly ahead over hopes of rebuilding after an earthquake and tsunami ravaged Japan. Weak US new home sales data took the markets to session lows during the day before rebuilding hopes pumped in modest momentum. However, the day saw very tight volumes, reflecting investors’ concern over global worries and bank-dividend disappointment. After trading in the negative zone during the early session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finally gained 0.6% and closed the day at 12,086.02. The Standard & Poor 500 was up 0.3% and finished at 1,297.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 2,698.30 after surging 0.5%. Wednesday was one of the lightest days in terms of trading volumes on the New York Stock Exchange with composite volumes at a mere 3.9 billion shares. On

Today, just like back then, many individual investors are buying up what some call “poor man’s gold.” Gold may be capturing headlines and new record highs. But silver is shining too… enough to make many wonder whether its forward returns might just beat

by David Fessler, Energy and Infrastructure Expert Wednesday, December 2, 2009: Issue #1149 You don’t have to look too far these days without hearing someone talk about how high gold prices could go. The topic is fiercely debated in the mainstream financial media at the moment – especially for investors who are late to the party. But are they really late, or is the “party” just getting started? Yes, investors who bought the gold ETF, SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE: GLD), or gold miners like Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), or Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY) a year ago have seen their investments soar by 54%, 83% and 184% respectively. But gold continues to soar. And large open market purchases from central banks in China, India and Russia are only helping the price
