Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology Inc. (MU) will offer its advanced Reduced Latency DRAM (RLDRAM) 3 memory chips to networking solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent (ALU). Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Alcatel-Lucent is a leading provider of mobile, fixed, IP and Optics technology solutions. It serves service providers, enterprises, strategic industries and governments across the world. Micron’s memory chips will be used by Alcatel-Lucent to develop next-generation network offerings. Alcatel-Lucent will use the RLDRAM 3 memory in pioneering the 400 gigabyte capacity-oriented chipset. Micron’s yet-to-arrive RLDRAM 3 chip will allow faster and more efficient data transfer over networks. With this chip, network performance will be doubled, while latency will come down to less than 10 nanoseconds. Latency is the lag time between a request for data and its delivery.

The miss was largely due to subdued PC sales, which adversely affected the demand for memory chips. Micron stated that the unit is under construction and is likely to be operational within the next three to five years, depending on existing market conditions. The idea behind this expansion is to complement Micron’s existing facility in Xi’an, which was built in 2007.
The three-day rally of the markets was halted on Tuesday with investors adopting a cautious stance as ensuing unrest in the Middle East pushed crude prices higher. Also, the lack of any new information on the crisis in Japan provided little strength to the indices to extend their winning streak. Last week, markets were in the red, but had started moving up since Thursday, reducing the weekly losses. However, it had been predicted that investors were worried about volatility in the markets and were not ready to bet big. On the second day of this week these fears have come true to a certain extent and the CBOE Volatility Index shot up 1.9% to 20.21, close to pre-Japan crisis levels. SanDisk Corporation (SNDK) is expected to grow earnings by 160% in 2010 but analysts are less optimistic going into 2011, as they forecast an earnings decline of 14%. SanDisk manufactures flash memory cards for mobile phones, digital cameras and camcorders, embedded memory for mobile devices, and USB flash drives for consumers and enterprises.
SanDisk Corporation (SNDK) keeps defying skeptics expecting a tech slowdown as it once again surprised on the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the fourth quarter in a row. SanDisk manufactures flash memory cards for mobile phones, digital cameras and camcorders, embedded memory for mobile devices, and USB flash drives for consumers and enterprises. On July 22, the company announced that its founder and CEO Eli Harari would retire on Dec 31, 2010 and will be an advisor to the company for two years after the retirement. The announcement seemed to cause a ripple amongst investors, but the current President and COO, Sanjay Mehrotra, who was also a co-founder along with Harari, will be stepping in which seems to ensure a smooth transition. The company’s current USB partners include Kingston Digital Inc, iShares S&P Global Materials (MXI), Rocky Mountain Ram, SanDisk Corp. (SNDK), SPYRUS, Hagiwara and Yoggie Security Systems. The demand for secured USB devices is growing by the day among both individual and enterprise customers, especially within highly regulated industries, where data security is a major concern.
In retaliation to the patent infringement suit filed by Apple Inc. (AAPL) on HTC Corp. some time back, the Taiwanese handset maker HTC filed a counter complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission, accusing Apple of violating five of its patented technologies related to mobile phones, and thereby requesting for a ban on the import, marketing and sale of some of Apple’s mobile devices in the United States, which are currently manufactured outside the country. Specifically, HTC alleged that Apple violated its patent relating to technologies that help the iPhone manage power and handle phone directories, as well as a technology that helps the newly launched iPad to store data, while it is in sleep mode.
Investors like to gravitate to investment themes because they are easy to understand, tend to last for longer than a few months, and can deliver solid returns. Longer-term investment themes could range from aging of the population, converting to clean energy, or using mobile communications devices. The key is to identify a trend, outline an investment theme for that trend, and then look for companies that are profiting from that trend. One trend that stick out is the increased use of mobile devices for more than just talking.
