Markets opted to take a pause after a recent rally, as mixed economic data and a session featuring light volumes meant benchmarks ended Tuesday’s session on a flat note. Given the Christmas overhang, consolidated volumes remained substantively low, and final minutes’ movement took the Dow slightly lower to end its winning run of four consecutive trading days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) slipped 2.6 points or 0.02% to finish the day at 12,291.35. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) also remained almost unchanged at 1,265.43, gaining 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.3% and finished yesterday’s trading session at 2,625.20.
An economy plagued by financial crisis and high unemployment remains a bitter truth, but relentless efforts to emerge from these doldrums cannot be ignored. The ongoing turmoil has also touched J. C. Penney Company Inc. (JCP), which has seen its crests and troughs through the year despite trying every means to tide over a distressed economy. Dismal Sales Numbers J. C. Penney has been losing its foothold in the market as it struggles against retail chains such as Macy’s Inc. (M) and Kohl’s Corporation (KSS). It has been witnessing falling comparable-store sales since the last four months. Comps declined 1.9% in August, 0.6% in September, 2.6% in October and 2% in November. Between January and November 2011, comparable-store sales fell as low as 2.6% (in October) and rose as high

Markets eroded initial gains on Tuesday after it emerged that the Federal Reserve had no new gifts to offer to the economy. The central bank also cautioned that the global financial scenario poses a serious threat for the domestic economy. Additionally, with the pre-holiday rush supposedly setting in, a less than expected increase in retail sales acted as a deterrent to optimism among investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) declined 0.6% to finish the day at 11,954.94. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was down 0.9% and closed the day at 1,225.73.
Does the start of holiday sales suggest a break from the phase when US consumers were reeling under a series of macro-economic shocks? For now, the initial data released by National Retail Federation suggests that Santa has a bagful of gifts for the majority of retailers this holiday season. Early reports hinted that the retailers have won over prolonged macro-economic uncertainty. Shoppers shrugged off their economic woes to mark record holiday weekend sales of $52.4 billion. Supporting the view, data released by the Conference Board reveals that Consumer Confidence Index increased to 56.0 in November from 40.9 in October (its highest level since July, when the index reached 59.2). Further, data from the Commerce Department noted consumer spending to have recorded its fastest growth in third quarter 2011. The quarter

The Thanksgiving weekend brought record sales for retailers who went on to post better-than-expected November comparable-store sales and are now padding up for the holiday season. Does this indicate that the retail party has just begun? Early hours store openings, huge discounts, promotional activities and free shipping on online purchases were enough to lure customers on Black Friday that turned out to be a bonanza for both brick-and-mortar as well as e-commerce retailers. The data released by Swampscott, Massachusetts-based Retail Metrics, reveals that comparable-store sales of over 20 companies rose 3.2% beating the expectation of 3.1%. The data provider further added that 57% of retailers outpaced while 33% missed their expectations. Yes, there were retailers that stuck to old traditions and were not bold to think out of the box.

Industry Rank Analysis 11-15-11 Before you know it, Christmas will be here. That is something that tends to bring retail front and center to the minds of investors. Rumors of the death of the U.S. consumer appear to be premature. Despite extremely low levels in the surveys of consumer confidence, people are still going out to shop. Personally I don’t like to rely on those surveys, because what people say to the poll takers is often very different from what they actually do. A wide variety of Retail industries are doing very well based on the Zacks Rank. In light of the second month in a row of surprisingly strong Retail Sales numbers, it looks like the retailers might continue to stay on top for a while. Also in the

Markets chose to take a breather on Friday, closing on a flat note just a day after it posted a huge rally spurred on by the outcome of the European Council meeting. However, some of the encouragement ebbed after analysts questioned the effectiveness of the plan. Nonetheless, investors remained optimistic and the markets logged their fourth-straight week of gains and looked en route to posting the best monthly gains in decades. In an uncharacteristic move, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained only 22 points or 0.2% to settle at 12,231.11. It has almost become a norm for the blue-chip index to post double-digit swings and this small movement reflected the pause investors have opted to take. Only for the second time out of 69 sessions and since July 22

The company is driven by strong same-store sales growth and gross margin expansion. Moreover, the company is optimistic going forward that the sales growth across store formats will be supported by its merchandising, service and marketing initiatives. Further, the company intends to be very strategic in its SG&A spending, inventory management and capital expenditure investments. Our six-month target price of $11.00 per share equates to about 32.4x of earnings estimate for 2012. This target price implies the expected total return of 21.4% over that period.
On Thursday, I wrote a piece titled “The Seven ‘C’s’ of Recovery Optimism” with my last, and possibly weakest, point for the continuing economic expansion being the resiliency of the American consumer. Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

To that end, retailers concentrated on aligning inventories with sales, improving operating efficiencies and spending on technology. These focused efforts helped retailers enter fiscal 2011 with a more optimistic outlook. On the operational front, retailers would like to hone their supply chains and maintain lean inventory levels. Keys to Success The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that retail

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U’s Senior Analyst Wednesday, November 24, 2010: Issue #1395 Forget the breathless buildup to Black Friday – the much-ballyhooed Thanksgiving sales event. In an effort to pre-empt the frantic holiday shopping season, America’s retailers are already in full-on sales mode, having instituted “Black November” instead. With the economic recovery still limping along, retailers are fighting for every nickel of consumer spending. And given that the holiday season accounts for as much as half of retailers’ annual revenue, many have lengthened the shopping period in a bid to jolt sales early and ease some of the pressure. Big sales events have attempted trying to lure shoppers into purchasing flat screen TVs and apparel before they even bought their turkeys and sweet potatoes.
One of the most notable features of the Great Recession relative to that of all previous recessions is that in this one, once you lose your job, it has been incredibly difficult to find a new one. As a result, people have been pounding the pavement looking for work for periods of time that would have been unheard of in any other downturn. There are two basic measures of unemployment duration provided in the monthly employment report — the average (mean) duration and the median duration. The average has a longer history, but since it is impossible to be unemployed for less than zero weeks, it will always be higher than the median, and is a number that is much more prone to be skewed by outliers. However, as the

The company’s comparable store sales grew 9.9% for the five weeks ended Jan 2, 2010, as it benefited from a designer clearance event. During the five week period, the company saw growth in women’s designer and “gold range” apparel, men’s sportswear, women’s shoes, and handbags. According to Saks, the weakest categories for December were fine jewelry, intimate apparel, men’s contemporary apparel, men’s accessories, and cosmetics.
Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 20,000 this week to 512,000. Last week’s numbers were revised slightly higher, so arguably the drop was 18,000, but that’s still a nice improvement. The four-week moving average dropped by 3,000 to 523,750. Since new claims can be volatile from week to week, the four-week moving average is generally considered a better gauge of where we are. The graph below (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) shows the history of that average. We are now 135,000 below the peak set back in April. This is a key piece of evidence that the recession is over. However, we remain above the highest levels seen in either of the last two recessions. The level indicates that we are still losing jobs, but at a slower rate than we had

We got some good news on the job front today as initial claims for unemployment insurance fell 33,000 to 521,000, the lowest level since January. This brought the four week moving average (shown in the graph below from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) down by 9,000 to 539,750. This is 119,000 below the peak it set back in April. Historically, a peak in the four-week average of new claims has correspondened with the end of a recession, although I think clearly this time it jumped the gun by a few months. Still, given the length of time since it peaked and the magnitude of the decline, it seems very unlikely that we will see a new peak in this cycle. However, it does seem likely to me that we will have a period where claims stay
