Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

If there is one industry that can survive a recession, it’s grocery stores. People may cut back a bit or trade down to generic brands, but they still have to eat. The Kroger Co (KR) is one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., and the company weathered the last recession quite well. Management expects this trend to continue for the rest of 2010, too, which has prompted analysts to raise their estimates higher. Second Quarter Results Kroger recently reported its results for the second quarter of 2010. Earnings per share came in at $0.41, a 5% increase over the same quarter in 2009, and 14% ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. It

Even as unemployment rate remained at a grueling 9.6%, the latest jobs report said the economy lost a surprisingly high 95,000 jobs in September – fueling hopes the Federal Reserve will pump in more money into the economy to resurrect the unstable economic growth. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 11006.48, up 57.90 points, or 0.5%. The blue-chip index is up 5.6% year-to-date.
Unemployment and persisting deflation were primarily responsible for the sluggish revenue growth at Safeway (SWY) for the past two quarters. The situation worsened with the company forecasting 1.2% deflation by the year end compared to the previous expectation of 0.4% inflation. The scenario is better reflected in declining same-store sales which forced the company to lower its guidance for 2010. We also doubt the ability of the retailers to pass down the increase in prices to customers due to intense competition. Although a recovery in the economy will be a lifeline for the company, we prefer to avoid the stock for the time being. Given these factors, we downgrade Safeway to Underperform.
However, quarterly earnings were down 33% from prior-year earnings of 46 cents per share. Safeway’s sales fell 7.0% year over year to $9.5 billion in the third quarter of 2009. On a year-over-year basis, total retail sales were down 5.7% — a slight improvement from the 5.8% year-over-year decline in August (remember that things really started to fall apart last September). However, the headline number is a bit misleading since it includes auto sales, which were greatly inflated during August by the “Cash for Clunkers” program. After the program was over, auto sales fell right back to where they had been before the program started. If autos are excluded, sales were up 0.5% for the month and off 4.9% from a year ago.
