We expect Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) to beat expectations when it reports first quarter 2013 results on Apr 24. Why a Likely Positive Surprise? Our proven model shows that Northrop Grumman is likely to beat earnings because it has the right combination of two key ingredients. Positive Zacks ESP: Expected Surprise Prediction or ESP, which represents the difference between the Most Accurate estimate and the Zacks Consensus Estimate, is at +1.16%. This is a leading indicator of a likely positive earnings surprise for shares. Zacks #3 Rank (Neutral): Note that stocks with Zacks Ranks of #1, #2 and #3 have a significantly higher chance of beating earnings. The restructuring would aim to streamline operations, increase productivity and achieve stronger alignment with customers’ preferences. The restructuring will be effective from Apr 1, 2013. Currently, Raytheon’s operations are classified into six business segments: Integrated Defense Systems (IDS), Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS), Missile Systems (MS), Network Centric Systems (NCS), Space and Airborne Systems (SAS), and Technical Services (TS). However, post re-alignment, this number will come down to four.
The fourth quarter reporting season gets into high gear this week, with 253 companies coming out with quarterly results, including 83 S&P 500 companies. The earnings season thus far has been relatively uneventful, but we will have a better idea by the end of this week; by then we will have seen 30% of the total fourth quarter reports. While last week was all about banks, the focus this week is on the Technology sector, particularly Apple (AAPL) which reports after the close on Wednesday. The iPhone maker has lost some of its sizzle lately and is expected to see earnings decline from the same period last year. No company grows forever, but it may be premature to write Apple off.
Northrop Grumman Corporation, (NOC) received a three-year contract from the U.S. Army to build and deliver hand-held targeting devices (“HHTPDs”) at its Apopka operation in Florida. The contract is valued at $9.2 million. To date, the company has delivered over 25,000 laser targeting systems to the Army. The hand-held device weighing around 5.5 pounds enables land forces to accurately convey critical mission data to aircraft and command outfits. The newly designed small and lightweight HHTPDs include a celestial navigational module. The cutting-edge device is a high-tech version of the previously manufactured portable Lightweight Laser Designator Rangefinder IIH. Northrop currently has a series of such laser systems in the pipeline for production like the Mark VII and Mark VIIE laser target locators, M1 Abrams Eyesafe Laser Rangefinder and Target Acquisition Designation

Department of Defense (“DoD”) has made a proposal to Congress for the sale of Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NOC) Global Hawk surveillance drones to the government of South Korea under the foreign military sale (“FMS”) program. The deal is expected to be $1.2 billion. If the request is approved by the Congress, then Northrop will sell four RQ-4 Block 30 (I) Global Hawk spy drones. Per the deal, Northrop would also supply associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support, which would include infrared and electro-optical sensors, imagery analysis systems and moving target indicators on board the Global Hawk Block-30 unmanned aircraft. These drones have been used by the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan and Iraq. The deal would be the first order in the Asia- Pacific region for the high-altitude surveillance

Raytheon Company (RTN) said that it has been awarded a contract for low-rate initial production (LRIP) of active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems for the U.S. Air Force. The radar systems would be used in The Boeing Company’s (BA) F-15E all-weather multi-role fighter Radar Modernization Program. Raytheon’s APG-82(V)1 AESA radar can simultaneously detect, identify and track multiple air and surface targets at longer ranges than the APG-70 radar it replaces. The system offers a substantial improvement in reliability and reduces Air Force maintenance costs. When integrated into the F-15E weapons system, the AESA radar will improve detection and tracking of enemy targets. Raytheon is scheduled to begin delivery of the LRIP-2 radar systems in February 2014. Final delivery of the initial LRIP lot of six APG-82(V)1 radars is scheduled

The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The industry largely depends on U.S. government contracts. Defense spending is the major source of revenue for the top nine global aerospace and defense companies, with the US accounting for more than 40% of total global defense spending. Given the uncertain macroeconomic environment, not just in the U.S. but also globally, the industry faces the risk of fewer new orders as customers are more likely to postpone or cancel contractual orders and/or payments. Looking forward, Raytheon enjoys strong order bookings and order backlog, an improving balance sheet, growing cash flow, and steady operational improvements. Future growth will be driven by its focus in the areas of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; air & missile defense systems; border security; air traffic management; training & homeland security; and cyber security. The $10.4 billion deal is for supplying 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force (‘IAF’). The order heralded Rafale’s entry into the export market. Rafale’s entry into the export market is a major bad news for the beleaguered U.S. defense contractors who are looking offshore to compensate for the Pentagon’s planned axing of almost $1 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. Although defense primes have mostly reported upbeat numbers for fiscal 2011, we are concerned about future growth in order backlogs from domestic programs. The direct commercial sale calls for the systems to be installed on the 2,300-ton frigate-class ships starting in April 2013, and represents Phalanx’s largest sale to the Republic of Korea’s naval fleet. Phalanx is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and 20 mm gun system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that have penetrated all other ship defense systems. More than 890 systems have been built and deployed in the navies of 25 nations. The Phalanx Weapon System was originally manufactured by General Dynamics Corporation (GD) but was sold in 1992 to Hughes Missile Systems Company. Subsequently, Hughes was acquired by Raytheon.
The growth of the Aerospace and Defense industry depends largely on the spending outlook of government departments, with the U.S. defense budget being the primary driver. The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. In 2010, the total global defense expenditure of $1.6 trillion grew 1.3% from 2009 levels in real terms. The majority of this growth came from the U.S. Defense spending, which was $698 billion in 2010, accounting for roughly 43% of the global total. The U.S. defense budget for 2011 is $670.8 billion, out of which the base budget comprises $513 billion with another $157.8 billion approved as supplementary defense spending mainly to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
