Earlier this week, Rambus Inc. (RMBS) signed a patent licensing agreement with Fern Howard for an undisclosed sum. Alton, Hampshire-based Fern Howard is a recognized producer of energy efficient lighting solutions. Per the terms of the agreement, Fern Howard will obtain Rambus’ patented technology for its advanced lighting products. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. Rambus’ patented innovations include LED edge-lit optical designs, MicroLens light distribution features, high-volume, low-cost light guide panels, and multi-function film manufacturing technologies. These technologies facilitate lighting and display solutions vendors to include advantageous features of LED in each lighting solution at an affordable price.
Technology licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) received an untoward ruling for a lawsuit filed for patent infringement, by a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC). In the initial verdict, the judge mentioned that the plaintiffs did not conduct any breach with Rambus’ patented technologies. However, the final judgment is due in July. In a suit filed in 2010, Rambus complained that a number of its patents have been illegally used by chip makers LSI Corp. (LSI), MediaTek Inc. and STMicroelectronics (STM). This is the second loss in a row for Rambus, which met a similar fate in November 2011. At that time, Rambus received an unfavorable ruling by a California jury on the long-drawn (almost 7 years) antitrust battle with Micron Technology Inc. (MU) and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. Per the terms of the agreement, MediaTek can use Rambus’ patented technology for its integrated circuit products for five years. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. In 2010, Rambus accused MediaTek of unlawfully using its patented inventions. But last Friday, a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC) negated the claims and gave the plaintiff a clean chit. Keeping aside the judge’s final ruling, which is due in July, both companies reportedly announced that they have settled all previous claims mutually. Despite a legal tussle, MediaTek opted for Rambus’ technology. Customers are demanding utmost flexibility in electronic products. As MediaTek is a leading System-on-Chip

Rambus Inc. (RMBS) recently signed a patent licensing agreement with Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) for an undisclosed sum. Per the terms of the agreement, Broadcom can use Rambus’ patented DRAM memory controllers and serial links technology for its logic integrated circuit products for five years. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. Apart from this deal, Rambus and Broadcom have settled all earlier claims regarding its patented innovations. Broadcom is a fabless semiconductor company and its operations circle around the broadband, mobile and wireless, as well as infrastructure and networking verticals. As per a report published by the U.S. research firm Gartner in April 2011, Broadcom is now one of the top 10 semiconductor companies in the world. We believe that association

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

This is a special-purpose investment vehicle that the company had handed over to FRBNY as collateral mortgage bonds during the peak of its financial crisis.
Technology licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) announced that it had inked a patent licensing deal with the leading graphics chip company, NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA). As per the deal, NVIDIA will pay a royalty to Rambus for certain memory controller patents. Despite a long-standing legal battle between the two companies related to patent infringements, the deal indicates a situation in favor of Rambus. In July 2008, Rambus filed a suit in the U.S. District Court alleging that NVIDIA products such as chipsets, graphics processors, media communication processors and multimedia applications processors infringed upon its patents. Recently, Rambus received a notice of favorable ruling from the International Trade Commission (ITC), whereby NVIDIA’s products would be barred from entering U.S. markets. However, the final announcement on ITC’s website is still pending. However, NVIDIA

Technology licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) received a favorable ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) for lawsuits filed against various parties Incorporatedluding chip maker Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) and PC makers Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Asus Computer International Inc. In the lawsuits filed in 2008, Rambus claimed that Nvidia and other manufacturers had infringed its patented technology. After a long-drawn legal battle, the ITC revealed that Nvidia chips infringed Rambus patents, and plans to issue an order that would ban imports of certain products containing the patented chips. However, final announcement on ITC’s website is still pending. On the other hand, Nvidia remains confident that it will be able to use a European Commission license, which will force Rambus to make certain patents available to it. Therefore, NVIDIA customers

Rambus Inc. (RMBS) reported second-quarter 2010 loss per share of 19 cents (excluding one-time items, but including stock-based compensation expense) that missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 7 cents. Revenues Rambus reported total revenue of $38.9 million in the second quarter, up 44% from $27.0 million in the year-ago period, but down 76% from $161.9 million in the prior quarter. The sequential comparison was tough due to the huge amount ($95.9 million) received in the first quarter of 2010 as compensation for the settlement of a dispute with Samsung Electronics. However, the year-over-year strength could be attributed to an increase in licensing revenues, fueled by strong sales of computers, consumer electronics and game consoles Incorporatedluding higher royalties from Sony Corp (SNE), which saw continued strong sales of its PS3.
Chip interface technology and architecture licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with GE Lighting, a unit of General Electric Company’s (GE) Appliances & Lighting business, for the enhancement of LED (light emitting diode) products. As per the agreement, GE Lighting will license Rambus’ patented processes and technologies for manufacturing its own LED lighting solutions. Rambus’ lighting innovations will therefore enable GE to create a new generation of advanced LED-based lighting products specifically targeted at architectural and commercial applications. Though financial terms were not disclosed, we believe Rambus is well positioned as a key player to meet the escalating demand for LED lighting technology. LED as a lighting source has evolved as a substitute for incandescent light sources with proven advantages like lower energy

Chip interface technology and architecture company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) has received an assurance from the largest semiconductor manufacturing company Samsung Electronics that the latter will resolve all claims of Rambus relating to the patent on its chip technology used by Samsung in its semiconductor products. Under the terms of the agreement, Rambus will get an amount of $900 million over a period of five years. The payment schedule is framed in such a way that Samsung will initially invest $200.0 million in Rambus stock, making another payment of $200.0 million and an additional $25.0 million per quarter thereafter for the next five years. This will relieve Samsung of all the patent infringement charges filed by Rambus. We believe this is a good compensation amount received by Rambus, and will provide

Ambac Assurance Corp, a unit of Ambac Financial Group Inc. (ABK) has sued Credit Suisse Group (CS), alleging the company misrepresented the risks of mortgage-backed securities in a deal Ambac insured in 2007. Ambac claimed that many of the loans involved were fraudulent, based on misstatements of income or occupancy. Ambac increased its estimate of remediation recoveries on residential mortgage backed securities (RMBS) transactions due to breaches of representations and warranties by approximately $738 million during the third quarter. Ambac is actively working on these transactions to resolve these breaches through litigation or otherwise, and continues to believe that the assumed recovery time of three years to be appropriate. Revenue The company reported revenue of $27.9 million, up 3.3% sequentially, but down 5.3% from the year-ago quarter. The sequential increase may be attributed to higher variable royalty revenue and the year-over-year decline to lower contract revenue. Slight Industry revival, coupled with growth in the company’s target markets helped the company increase revenue. Cost and Expense Total cost and expenses for the third quarter of 2009 was $48.5 million, down 19.2% from $60.0 million reported in the year-ago quarter.
