Earnings Preview 12/16/11 There will only be a handful of firms reporting next week as the third quarter reporting season is almost over. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

Oracle Corp. (ORCL) recently announced that one of the leading retail and commercial banks of Brazil, Banco Santander has chosen Oracle Exadata Database Machine to integrate the operations of Banco Real, which it acquired in August 2009. The Brazilian division of the Spain-based global financial services firm was facing integration problems due to the huge amount of data that it was required to handle after the merger. The challenges faced by the company included growing data volumes, inadequate processing speeds, lengthy batch processes and space limitations in their data center, which were impacting Santander’s regular operations, reputation and revenue growth. Banco Santendar’s migration to Exadata has resulted in the consolidation of servers that led to a significant decline in infrastructure costs. Not that good, considering the fact that it beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 10.8% on an average in the last four quarters. However, third quarter guidance was robust, primarily reflecting higher business spending by corporations. Oracle expects to gain from a strong software business (65.5% of second quarter total revenue) in the upcoming quarters.
A leading provider of virtualization infrastructure software solutions VMware Inc. (VMW) has launched a limited period VMware Fusion upgrade program for users of Parallels Desktop, Macintosh version, for $9.99. Under the program, Parallels Macintosh users will be able to switch over to VMWare Fusion 3 for only $9.99, thereby saving $30.00 from a usual VMware Fusion upgrade or a $40.0 from upgrading to Parallels Desktop 6.
A leading technology software company, Novell Inc. (NOVL) lowered its third quarter 2010 revenues and operating margin guidance, previously given out during the second quarter earnings call. Novell shares fell 19 cents, or 3.2% to $5.82 on Tuesday trading based on negative investor sentiment. Novell’s lowered guidance is mainly due to customer softness, given that they remain cautious regarding the company’s plan to explore strategic alternatives. The uncertainty to sell itself outright to another entity is making customers wary, which is having a negative impact on the company’s sales. Novell expects to report third quarter 2010 results on August 26, 2010. Net revenues for the third quarter are expected to be in the range of $197 million to $199 million, down from the previous expectation of $205 million to $210

A leading technology software company, Novell Inc. (NOVL) is set to announce its fourth quarter results soon. According to the Zacks Consensus estimates, earnings are expected to be 6 cents a share. Novell expects to maintain double-digit adjusted operating margins for the full year 2009. The company expects the fourth quarter revenue run rate to be slightly below third quarter levels, but also expects the identity business to grow. The company reported mixed third quarter results, with revenue slightly below the Zacks Consensus expectations and adjusted EPS marginally higher. Total revenue declined due to a sharp drop in software license revenue. However, earnings benefited from lower operating expenses due to cost cutting initiatives. Novell has an outsourcing agreement with Affiliated Computer Services Inc. (ACS) and has expanded its partnership with
