Recently, AstraZeneca (AZN) announced that US District Court for the District of Columbia has dismissed the lawsuit filed by the company against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AstraZeneca had taken legal action against the FDA, challenging the agency’s decision to reject AstraZeneca’s Citizen Petitions. The Citizen Petitions were filed by the company for Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) and Seroquel XR. The Citizen Petitions were filed to bar the FDA from approving any generic versions of the drug that do not include warnings related to hyperglycemia and suicidality in its label. With this move, AstraZeneca was looking to delay the launch of generic versions of Seroquel considering the company has marketing exclusivity for the data associated with the hyperglycemia warning till December 2, 2012. Meanwhile, the UK High Court has

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (TEVA) has been pretty active on the generic product launch front with the company launching several generic products in the last few weeks. Among recently launched generic products are Teva’s generic versions of Sanofi’s (SNY) high blood pressure drugs, Avapro and Avalide, AstraZeneca’s (AZN) schizophrenia treatment, Seroquel, and Forest Laboratories’ (FRX) Lexapro. While Teva will enjoy a 180-day period of marketing exclusivity where the generic launches of Avapro, Avalide and Lexapro are concerned, we note that other generic players like Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) and Mylan (MYL) have also launched their generic versions of Seroquel. As per IMS data, annual US sales of Avapro, Avalide, Seroquel, and Lexapro were $464 million, $124 million, $4.6 billion and $2.9 billion, respectively.
November 30, 2011 was a big day for Pfizer, Inc. (PFE) with its blockbuster cholesterol drug, Lipitor, losing exclusivity in the US. With so many drugs losing exclusivity, why is the loss of exclusivity of Lipitor such a major event? Well, Lipitor has been a huge revenue generator and its loss of exclusivity could very well represent the biggest generic opportunity in recent times. Lipitor sales came in at $10.7 billion in 2010 with sales for the first nine months of 2011 coming in at $7.6 billion. Pfizer Goes Aggressive Typically, whenever a branded drug loses exclusivity, it witnesses a rapid erosion in sales with the entry of generic versions. However, Pfizer is trying to turn the tide in its favor by adopting several steps to minimize the impact of

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) recently announced the launch of its generic version of Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) antibiotic drug, Levaquin, in the US. Data from IMS Health reveal that the branded product recorded sales of $1.1 billion in the trailing twelve months ending March 2011. Only recently Dr. Reddy’s announced the launch of three other generic products in the US. The company launched the generic versions of Pfizer Inc.’s (PFE) anti-depressant, Effexor XR, Eisai Co. Ltd.’s Alzheimer’s treatment, Aricept, and Novartis AG’s (NVS) breast cancer treatment, Femara. We believe that the launches of all these generic drugs will bring in additional revenues for Dr. Reddy’s Global Generics segment, which recorded sales of $1.2 billion in fiscal 2011 (ending March 2011), reflecting a sharp year-over-year increase of 10%.
Medical isotope maker IsoRay Inc (ISR) has initiated a new combination therapy study using its Cesium-131 (an isotope) internal radiation therapy (“brachytherapy”) and external beam radiation. The study has been designed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining Cesium-131 brachytherapy with intensity modulated radiation therapy (“IMRT”) in treating intermediate and high risk prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent cancer (after skin cancer) among American men and the second-leading cause (after lung cancer) of cancer-related death. High level of PSA (a protein produced in the prostate) generally indicate the presence of this disease. More than 30,000 people succumb to prostate cancer annually in the U.S. Based on the available study results, the dual therapy (brachytherapy and external beam radiation) has shown to offer major benefits to prostate cancer patients.

In the four-item warning letter, the FDA has asked for additional data and corrective actions for certain listed items.
Recently, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) exercised its option to obtain exclusive license regarding further development and commercialization of ChemoCentryx’s Traficet-EN, a specific CCR9 antagonist. The drug candidate is meant for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases Incorporatedluding Crohn’s disease. Under the terms of the agreement, ChemoCentryx will receive an option exercise fee of $35 million as well as milestone payments. In addition, on successful commercialization, ChemoCentryx will receive royalties on sales of the drug. Following the option exercise, Glaxo will be responsible for further development of Traficet-EN. We believe Glaxo is strengthening its pipeline to meet the patent challenges in the forthcoming period. Several products like Valtrex, Coreg IR, and Requip are all facing declining sales due to intense generic competition.
We recently initiated coverage on Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (WPI) with a “Neutral” recommendation and a target price of $42. The company enjoys a strong position in the generics market. We believe the company’s strategy of developing generics that are difficult to formulate or manufacture will help strengthen its position in the market. Going forward Incorporatedreasing awareness about generics, initiatives taken by various government and private agencies encouraging the use of low-cost generics, an aging population and a corresponding increase in healthcare costs, as well as the large number of branded products losing patent protection over the coming years, should lead to continued expansion of the generics market. We also believe that Watson’s recent acquisition of Arrow will help the company expand its footprint in ex-U.S. territories, and will also boost

Earlier this week, the company formed a joint venture (JV) with Chinese company, Jiangsu Walvax Biotech Company, for the development and production of pediatric vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) for the Chinese market. The joint venture will initially produce Priorix, Glaxo’s vaccine for MMR. Glaxo will also transfer the technology so that the JV will be able to manufacture the vaccines locally over time.
All major pharmaceutical companies that have operations in India are likely to benefit from the latest decision made by the Commerce Ministry in that country. The ministry accepted the Mashelkar committee’s report, according to which India will continue to allow patents on incremental innovations if the enhancements are beneficial to patients. The decision was taken amidst severe protests from generic players and health activists who fear this will not allow cheaper generic drugs to enter the market. On the basis of 2008 sales figures, the Indian pharmaceutical market ranks 13th in the world, with sales of $7.7bn last year (an increase of 4% over 2007). The rapidly growing middle income group with higher disposable income makes it an attractive place for major pharma companies. The pharmaceutical market is expected to

(SGP) said it has signed an agreement with Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Orgenus Pharma Inc., which sought to make generic versions of its allergy drug Clarinex. This signals the end of all pending litigations that Schering filed against several generic drug manufacturing companies in the US District Court of New Jersey since 2006. These companies wanted to market solid oral doses of the drug, desloratadine, in the U.S. as generic brands before the expiration of certain Schering patents. Pursuant to the agreement, Orchid received rights to launch a generic version of the Clarinex brand Reditabs in the U.S. on Jan. 1, 2012 and Clarinex brand 5 milligram tablets on July 1 of that year.
