The world economy is currently going through a recovery phase. The momentum is expected to remain strong in 2011. The Telecommunications Industry is identified as a major driver of the global economic recovery. The telecommunications industry encompasses a lot of technology-related businesses. Besides the legacy local and long-distance wireline phone services, telecommunications industry also includes wireless communications, Internet services, fiber optics networks, cable TV networks and commercial satellite communications. Key Attribute We believe that the overall economic dynamics may shift in favor of telecommunications

We are upgrading our recommendation on Verizon Communications (VZ), the second largest U.S. phone company, to Neutral from Underperform. The improvement is based on solid third quarter results as well as strong future growth prospects for the company. Verizon reported stronger-than-expected earnings in the third quarter and surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Continued strength in Wireless, FiOs and strategic business services fuelled the earnings growth. Total revenue also improved driven by strong wireless revenues. However, wireline revenue remained under pressure due to persistent erosion of access line. During the first nine months of 2010, Verizon’s cash and cash equivalents increased to $5.4 billion from $1.2 billion in the year-ago period. Debt-to-equity ratio declined to 58.4% from 59.3% in the year-ago period. We believe Verizon’s continuous investment in its broadband network, strong

We are initiating coverage on ADTRAN Inc. (ADTN) with a Neutral rating. Currently, the stock has a Zacks #2 Rank (Buy). We believe ADTRAN is benefiting from several new product cycles in broadband access, fiber to the node, Ethernet over copper, optical and enterprise VoIP. The increasing adoption of the TA5000 platform has resulted in incremental market opportunities and share gains that are likely to continue in future. However, competitive pressure, regulatory environment, higher credit risk and customer concentration make us cautious on the stock. We believe the company’s rich balance sheet, policy of returning cash to shareholders, several broadband upgrades, access product lines such as the TA5000 platform, 1100 and 1200 series products and wireless backhaul products make it attractive for investors. ADTRAN is poised to benefit from the

Verizon Communications (VZ), the second largest U.S. phone company, raised its quarterly dividend by 2.6% to 48.75 cents per share. However, this is the smallest increase in four years due to slowing sales growth. The dividend equates to $1.95 per share on an annualized basis, up from the $1.90 per share paid in August. Verizon will pay the increased dividend on November 1 to shareholders of record as of October 8. Verizon remains committed to offer incremental returns to its shareholders via dividends and by leveraging a healthy free cash flow. Higher dividend indicates the strength of Verizon’s abundant free cash flow and rich balance sheet. The company distributed $5.3 billion and $2.7 billion as dividends to its shareholders in 2009 and in the first half of 2010, respectively. All

We are upgrading our recommendation for CenturyTel (CTL) to Neutral based on solid first-quarter 2010 results and management’s upbeat guidance. Earnings for the last quarter topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate driven by synergies from Embarq Corp. (acquired in July 2009). Moreover, revenues exceeded expectations boosted by an increased broadband Internet customer base. CenturyTel has emerged as one of the largest rural telecom carriers in the US following its acquisition of Embarq. The company’s shareholders have reportedly approved the change of the integrated entity’s name to “CenturyLink”. CenturyTel expects cost synergies of $375 million from the Embarq acquisition. However, CenturyTel remains challenged by the hemorrhaging landline voice business as it continues to experience organic decline in access lines due to burgeoning competition from other services (such as VoIP) from cable operators.

The Federal Communications Commission’s (“FCC”) so-called “Net Neutrality” rule suffered a big blow as a federal appeals court ruled that the US regulator lacks the authority to impose such regulations. The US Appeals Court for the District of Columbia unanimously voted to rule out FCC’s authority to dictate the way the incumbent cable and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) manage their networks. The court’s decision will not only dwindle the prospect of Net Neutrality but may also affect the implementation of FCC’s recently unveiled National Broadband Plan which is aimed at offering far-reaching accessibility of broadband Internet in the US. As a reminder, the Net Neutrality regulation is aimed at preventing the ISPs and cable multi-service operators (MSOs) from blocking or restricting access to legal web site contents or applications.
US telecom regulator Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reportedly unveiled its ambitious plan to catapult domestic broadband speeds over the next ten years. The agency seeks Internet service providers (ISPs) to offer broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to roughly 100 million US homes by 2020. Existing broadband networks offer speeds in the range of 3-10 Mbps. Announced by the FCC chairman Julius Genachowski on February 16, 2010, the proposal (called the “100 Squared” initiative) represents a part of FCC’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) which the regulator is expected to submit to the Congress on March 17, 2010. The agency is setting up strategies and an appropriate regulatory framework to promote adoption, affordability and the wider availability of broadband in the US. Under the NBP, FCC plans an

The National Broadband Plan represents a part of the US government’s 2009 stimulus package. The FCC is expected to brief about the proposed recommendations of the plan in February 2010, according to the regulator’s web site. One of the key recommendations likely to be featured in the plan is the overhaul of the FCC’s $7 billion Universal Service Fund (USF), which subsidizes phone services in rural areas. The commission is likely to recommend a shift of fund from phone services to broadband in high-cost areas. The local and long-distance telephone service provider expects its CapEX to remain at par with the estimated 2009 level of $1.7 billion. Qwest continues to invest in building necessary infrastructure to boost network capacity and availability. Historically, the company has allocated a major portion of the overall CapEx in deploying additional fiber-to-the-node (“FTTN”) capacity to increase the performance of its broadband network. Moving forward, Qwest plans to increase spending on deployment of fiber optic cable to support wireless services. The company recently introduced a new fiber-based Ethernet backhaul wholesale service for wireless operators. The service (called Qwest Mobile Ethernet Backhaul) leverages Qwest’s FTTN network to extend fiber connections to cellular sites. This will enable wireless operators to upgrade
