(GOOG) has announced that it would expand its high-speed Internet service through its fiber-optic network to Olathe, a Kansas City suburb with around 125,000 residents.
Recently, Texas Instruments (TXN), or “TI,” raised its revenue and earnings expectations to the upper end of its previously forecasted ranges for the first quarter of 2013. The chipmaker now expects sales of $2.80–$2.91 billion versus its previous guidance of $2.69–$2.91 billion. The lower end of the earnings outlook range has also been raised to 28–32 cents per share from the previous guidance of 24–32 cents. The earnings guidance includes acquisition and restructuring charges and tax benefit of 6 cents per share.
In order to boost the bandwidth requirement for each home appliances, Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., which is a business arm of Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), unveils StreamBoost technology for Wi-Fi routers and gateways. Increased deployments of 3G/4GLTE technology along with higher usage of smartphones and tablets have completely changed the whole concept of watching TV or videos. Now users have enough options to do multiple tasks simultaneously on tablets, smarthpones as well as on PCs, hence connecting seven devices on an average to a particular network. However, these gadget lovers have to compromise on network speed as a particular bandwidth has been allocated to these users. But Qualcomm’s new StreamBoost routers powered with VIVE 802.11ac technology offering speed up to 1.3 Gbps PHY rate of Wi-Fi capacity will mitigate this problem of

Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) or “TI” recently announced its plans to cut more than 500 jobs at its French research and development plant in Villeneuve-Loubet region, near Nice. The headcount reduction is scheduled to be complete in the next few months. The Villeneuve-Loubet facility makes microprocessors used in smartphones and tablets. Of late, some of its prime customers including Apple Inc. (AAPL) started developing the chips internally, giving TI’s business a jolt. Eventually, the company planned to shift its focus to industrial and automotive customers, which led to these 517 jobs cuts. Currently, Texas Instruments employs 609 people in France. Last month, the company announced that it plans to eliminate 1,700 jobs worldwide in order to reduce operational costs. This layoff is an attempt by the company to optimize its

The last gaming console I owned was the original Playstation. And I still haven’t bought a smartphone… It’s sad, I know. But while I can live without the latest gaming device or iPad, I can’t help but realize how badly I should buy a smartphone. The added benefits of having instant access to my email, the internet, countless apps, a quality camera and a GPS, all on a tiny cellular device, are undeniable. Yet there’s still another reason I want a smartphone now more than ever. It’s called Near Field Communication (NFC). And thanks to an upcoming release from Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), by the

We recently reiterated our Neutral recommendation on leading chipmaker Broadcom Corporation (BRCM). The company recently updated its guidance, raising the lower end of its revenue guidance. Amid a weak macro environment, the positive guidance from Broadcom is quite encouraging. Earnings estimates have increased. The company expects revenues to come between $2.0 billion and $2.10 billion compared to with the previous guidance of $1.95 billion – $2.10 billion. The increase in guidance was attributable to slightly better-than-expected revenue in the Mobile & Wireless business. The company is focused on innovative technologies related to connectivity, bandwidth and content, which has enabled it to capture a large chunk of market share. Broadcom is well placed in the fast-growing wired and wireless communications markets, with cutting-edge solutions for a growing number of connected users,

In yet another attempt to cut costs, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced that it would reduce its fourth quarter and 2013 wafer purchase commitment with GlobalFoundries. GlobalFoundries, which manufactures integrated circuits (ICs) for semiconductor companies such as Broadcom (BRCM), Qualcomm (QCOM), and STMicroelectronics (STM) was formed in 2009 by divesting AMD’s manufacturing unit. In 2010, it merged with Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. to become the third largest foundry in the world. AMD will reduce its expenditure on wafer purchases to $115.0 million for the fourth quarter and $1.15 billion for fiscal 2013. However, AMD will have to fork out a termination payment of $320.0 million, which will be spread over the next four quarters.
On Semiconductor (ONNN) is collaborating with the leading nanoelectronics research center imec (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre), to develop next generation Gallium Nitride (GaN) on Silicon (Si) power devices. GaN substrates could be very important for the semiconductor industry due to special properties such as stability at high temperatures, thermal conductivity and radiation tolerance. The substance is therefore suitable for high-power and high-frequency devices for application in stressful environments, such as in military or space equipment. However, the reaction to Silicon makes the substrate formation a bit tricky, which is the main reason for the smaller wafer sizes. Imec is working toward larger wafer sizes (its research produced 200mm wafers just last year). It has also developed a manufacturing process compatible with standard CMOS processes to facilitate volume production. For this purpose

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) recently slashed its revenue and gross margin guidance for the third quarter of 2012. Following the news, company shares fell sharply by 9.06% to $2.91 in extended trading hours. The chipmaker now expects sales to decrease 10% sequentially versus its previous forecast of a 1% decrease (+/- 3%). The company also lowered its gross margin guidance to 31%, lower than the previous expectation of 44%. However, operating expenses are expected to decline approximately 7% from the prior quarter, owing to tight expense control measures. Management said that the guidance cut was on account of weaker-than-expected demand across all product lines due to a weak global economy and lingering weakness in the U.S.personal computer market stemming from the growing preference for tablets. Advanced Micro also stated

Following the fiscal third-quarter (ending June 30, 2012) earnings announcement on July 19, 2012, most of the analysts covering Qualcomm Inc.
The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

We have upgraded our recommendation on Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) to Outperform. Recently, it reported a record high result for the first quarter of fiscal 2012. Net income was up 20% year over year and 33% sequentially, indicating Qualcomm’s operating efficiency. Management is quite confident that it will be able to maintain its current pace of top and bottom line growth for at least the next five years. There are primarily four reasons for this positive outlook: (1) gradual introduction of 4G LTE enabled mobile handsets in the U.S., Japan, and South Korea; (2) massive growth of 3G smartphones in the emerging markets, particularly in China, where the company has a strong foothold; (3) Qualcomm’s growing association with Apple Inc. (AAPL) for its iPhones and iPADs; and (4) a diversified product

Earnings rose to never-before-seen levels. iPhone, iPad and Mac sales also all reached new highs. Even more, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook says this is only the beginning. He states, “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.” One of these innovations, the company announced, will almost certainly be the introduction of near-field communication, or NFC, technology in new iPhones and iPads this year.
The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. The industry has come a long way since the last downturn, when most of the players streamlined operations and transferred more routine

Despite the sluggish economy and stiff competition, U.S. telecom service providers are delivering consistent growth. These companies are innovating products and services as well as enhancing the existing ones to grow market share. Telecom operators provide Voice Telephony, Data, Internet, Cable and Satellite Television services through either wireless or wireline networks. Future growth of the telecom industry depends on the wireless segment as subscribers are discontinuing landlines and moving quickly to wireless connections. We expect wireless services to grow at a larger pace and account for 46% of the industry’s revenues in 2013, up from the current 42%. The carriers are rapidly entering into the cloud computing business due to increased competition and changing consumer habits. Cloud computing is now a business prerequisite that is high in demand.
With the whole world increasingly going mobile, top phone makers such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM) are scrambling to bring smarter devices to the market. In fact, phone makers are touting screen size, resolution, virtual or real QWERTY keyboards, video conferencing, recording and streaming, social networking, office integration and what not to boost sales. While our parents may have considered a phone good if it offered noise-free, good-quality sound, we are more on the lookout for contacts management, social networking integration and media support, while our kids would rather be using the device to listen to music, capture and stream video and play games. Or that is what the phone companies would like us to do. And considering the level of competition in the

The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) deployed its first multi-mode base station in Branchburg, New Jersey. This marks a milestone move in the company’s Network Vision strategy, which serves as a major catalyst in its growth plan. Under the Network Vision strategy announced last year, Sprint will consolidate multiple incompatible networks (CDMA and iDEN) into one platform, supporting multiple technologies (3G and 4G) and spectrum bands (800 MHz, 1.9 GHz, 1.6 GHz and 2.5 GHz). The company expects the full Network Vision deployment to be over by year-end 2013. Moreover, Sprint Nextel would terminate its iDEN network in mid-2013. Further, the company is replacing its iDEN network on CDMA-based phones with a new version of Nextel’s “push-to-talk” feature from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM).
Competition sometimes creates strange bed fellows. Last week, this proverb was proved when Verizon Wireless entered into a spectrum purchase and products resell deal with SpectrumCo. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communicatons Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group plc. (VOD), and SpectrumCo, a consortium of U.S cable giants Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC), and Bright House Networks, are arch rivals. But most importantly, does this deal has the ability to transform the U.S. telecom market structure into a duopoly, especially when FCC and Department of Justice are raising several questions regarding the proposed merger of AT&T Inc. (T) with T-Mobile USA. A Duopoly in Disguise Major concern for the U.S. regulators regarding the proposed AT&T and T-Mobile merger is that this deal may ultimately result

Rumor has it that Amazon.com (AMZN) will be launching a smartphone late next year. Well, may not be a rumor exactly, since the Citigroup (C) analyst reporting the development mentioned that his supply chain checks suggested that such a device was in fact being developed in collaboration with Foxconn International Holdings. However, the largest contract cellphone maker may not be the one to ultimately make the product for Amazon, which may rely on its tablet maker Hon Hai Precision for the purpose. The phone is expected to use Texas Instruments’ (TXN) OMAP 4 processor and Qualcomm (QCOM) baseband chips. The question that comes to mind is, what could Amazon possibly be thinking? The company is no more a smartphone maker than a tablet maker. So this is not its core

This layoff is an attempt by AMD to optimize its cost structure and thereby improve its competitiveness. The workforce reduction is expected to be over by the first quarter of 2012 and will be conducted globally across all its divisions. Along with other unspecified operational changes, the layoffs are expected to save $200 million in 2012. Management is looking to reinvest some of the savings into newer business areas, including chips for devices such as tablet-style computers in emerging markets and Internet-related opportunities (mainly cloud computing).
Telecommunications industry is witnessing consistent growth despite experiencing a sluggish U.S. economy. Most of the large national telecom service providers together with the regional prepaid telecom operators generated net subscriber addition in the third quarter of 2011. In the last couple of years, capital spending constraints among telecom operators due to severe recessionary conditions were the main hindrance to the industry’s growth. However, with the economic recovery in progress, albeit a slow pace, telecom service providers are gradually expanding their network coverage on the back of significant subscriber growth. The telecommunications industry is a major driver of global economic recovery. An unprecedented growth of high-speed mobile Internet traffic, particularly for wireless data and video, has transformed this industry into the most evolving, inventive and keenly contested industry. In addition, emergence

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) finally released Google Wallet on September 19, Isis announced this week that a handful of major handset manufacturers are already showing support for its NFC platform. (Isis is a joint mobile payment venture between AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and T-Mobile.) While Isis most likely won’t come online until 2012, it should offer some competition to Google, which is likely to use its recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility to help further push its NFC agenda. Valued at 3.7 billion, it’s the largest semiconductor industry acquisition in seven years. The willingness of Broadcom to pay such a high premium represents the degree of paradigm shift in the industry. Semiconductor stocks across the board rose due to an overall market rally last week. But according to The Street, “The chip rally is notable because several stocks in the sector climbed on heavier volume – a sign that institutions are piling into the stocks.” This institutional pickup could signal

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

AT&T Inc.’s (T) $1.93 billion pending acquisition of spectrum licenses from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) is facing regulatory hurdles. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the buyout of Qualcomm’s wireless spectrumin the lower 700 MHz frequency band and the ambitious $39 billion proposed mega-merger of AT&T and T-Mobile USA hold the same regulatory concerns. Hence, the FCC has combined the investigation and review of both transactions, postponing the completion of the spectrum purchase to the first quarter of 2012 from the second half of the year. The FCC said that the Qualcomm deal as well as theT-Mobile purchase would give additional spectrum rights to AT&T, boosting data services to customers. He noted the stock chart looked bad and that a break below $24 would signal a bearish double-top pattern. Well, it fell past $24 last Friday and has dropped all the way to the $18s. This fall was spurred by an announcement that NXP would trim its guidance for the rest of 2011. Demand for the Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology has been slower than the company expected.
Telecommunications is one of the very few industries that witnessed massive technological improvement during the recession. An unprecedented growth of high-speed mobile Internet traffic, particularly for wireless data and video, has transformed this industry into the most evolving, inventive and keenly contested industry. The telecommunications industry is identified as a major driver of the global economic recovery. The world economy is currently going through a recovery phase. The momentum is expected to remain strong in 2011. Several industry researchers have predicted that 2011 may witness telecommunications spending even more than the pre-recession periods. In the last few years, capital spending constraints among telecom operators due to severe recessionary conditions were the main hindrance to growth of this industry. However, with the economic recovery underway, large telecom service providers are gradually

We are maintaining our cautious stance on Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) despite the company’s improved performance in the second quarter of 2011. Qualcomm, the largest global manufacturer of mobile phone chipsets, reported solid second quarter 2011 financial results where both the top and bottom line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Moreover, robust results, higher smartphone demand and increased 3G network deployment in emerging nations have allowed management to provide strong financial outlook for fiscal 2011. Qualcomm benefited from the growing popularity of Android-based 3G smartphones. According to Wireless Intelligence reports, there were nearly 1.3 billion 3G subscribers worldwide by the end of March this year. Another research firm, GSA stated that there were total 18 LTE network deployments till date, which indicates improving chipset demand going forward. CDMA iPhone of Apple

This also marks U.S. Cellular’s debut into the Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 7 platform. The smartphone will cost around $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and features a 3.6-inch screen, slide-out Qwerty keyboard, 1 GHz Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon processor and a 5-megapixel camera. Last month, U.S. Cellular had introduced HTC Merge, based on Google’s (GOOG) Android 2.2 (also called Froyo) operating system. Now, HTC 7 Pro is expected to expand the company’s footprint into the Windows’ smartphones arena, which is dominated by companies like AT&T (T) and T-Mobile.
Just months after Microsoft Corp (MSFT) announced that it would design an operating system based on ARM Holdings’ (ARMH) chip technology, the company showcased its Windows 8 software. The decision marks Microsoft’s divergence from its traditional partner Intel Corp (INTC), which is also fighting its own battle in the mobile computing space. Intel started promoting its trademarked “ultrabook,” which it expects will enable notebook-makers to regain some of the market share it lost to Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPad. The devices are expected to be lighter and just slightly more expensive than Apple’s, while providing greater functionality. Intel executives stated that ultrabooks based on Intel’s new chips would sport an advanced touch screen, start in a few seconds, connect to the Internet almost immediately and have several days of battery life
