This can be primarily attributed to an increase in the tally of oil rigs, almost offset by a fall in the natural gas and miscellaneous rig counts. In particular, there were more rigs drilling for oil than gas for the eighth week in a row as the companies look to capitalizing on soaring oil prices, which are currently trending at around $100 a barrel. However, we believe that pricing will be under modest pressure in the near future as new jackups begin to enter the market. Houston, Texas-based Rowan is a provider of international and domestic contract drilling and aviation services. The company’s operations are presently conducted in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, West Africa,

OUTLOOK Crude Oil The improving economic scene, both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide, had been the main driver of the oil rally that saw the commodity zoom past the $85 per barrel level in late April/early May 2010. However, in recent days, concerns about the European debt crisis and China’s growth outlook have renewed apprehensions about the global growth and energy demand. As a result, oil prices have slumped to around $76 per barrel. Additionally, high levels of product inventories (gasoline and distillate stocks remain above the upper boundary of the average range for this time of year), along with soaring commercial oil supplies, has further dragged down crude prices, in our view. But far too many factors weigh on oil prices — from OPEC decisions and

In its weekly release, Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported a rise in the U.S. rig count (number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the country), reflecting intensified drilling activity despite recent price declines for both commodities. Rigs exploring and producing in the U.S. totaled 1,557 for the week ended July 2, 2010. This is up by 5 from the previous week’s rig count and represents the highest level achieved this year. The current nation-wide rig count is 78% higher from the 2009 low of 876 (set in the week ended June 12, 2009) and significantly exceeds the prior-year level of 928. It rose to a 22-year high in 2008, peaking at 2,031 in the weeks ending August 29 and September 12. Natural Gas Rig

In its weekly release, Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported a rise in the U.S. rig count (number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the country), reflecting intensified drilling activity in Texas. This was partly offset by the growing oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and the ensuing drilling ban in the region that reduced activity. Rigs operating in the state of Texas climbed to their highest level in 16 months, while rig count in the GoM plunged further to a new 16-year low of 17 rigs (after dropping by a whopping 57% over the last two weeks). Rigs exploring and producing in the U.S. totaled 1,539 for the week ended June 18, 2010. This is up by 12 from the previous

Pride International Inc. (PDE) reported significantly better-than-expected first quarter results. Quarterly earnings was 45 cents per share, compared with the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 30 cents and the year-earlier earnings of 84 cents. The company expects second-quarter earnings per share in the range of 30 cents to 35 cents. Though the results came in above our expectations on lower operating costs and out-of-service time, it was lower than the year-earlier level due to weak utilization rates across all rig segments. However, a sequential improvement in utilization and dayrates is notable for all segments except jackup. In the offshore drilling space, Pride competes with players such as Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton (HAL), Transocean (RIG) and Rowan Companies (RDC). Segmental Performance Revenue from Pride’s Deepwater fleet was $220.8 million, up nearly 24% sequentially.

Below are some key sections of the minutes of the Federal Reserve Board’s March 16th meeting. I have interspersed my commentary and interpretation where needed. “The information reviewed at the March 16 meeting suggested that economic activity expanded at a moderate pace in early 2010. Business investment in equipment and software seemed to have picked up, consumer spending increased further in January, and private employment would likely have turned up in February in the absence of the snowstorms that affected the East Coast. “Output in the manufacturing sector continued to trend higher as firms increased production to meet strengthening final demand and to slow the pace of inventory liquidation. On the downside, housing activity remained flat and the nonresidential construction sector weakened further. Meanwhile, a sizable increase in energy prices

In September, the Producer Price Index rose by 0.3%. While this is an acceleration from the 0.6% decline in September, it is well below consensus expectations of a 0.5% increase. All of the price pressures were coming from food and energy. If they are stripped out to get the Core Producer Price Index, prices fell by 0.6% for the month — a much faster decline than the 0.1% decline last month, and even farther below the consensus expectations of a 0.1% increase for the month. Both food and energy rose by 1.6% at the finished level in September. For energy, though, it was just a partial reversal of the 2.4% decline in September. In September, finished food prices fell only 0.1%. On a year-over-year basis, the total Producer Price Index

Pride International Inc. (PDE) reported its third quarter results of 48 cents per share, compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 42 cents and the year-earlier earnings of 82 cents. Before adjusting one-time items, the earnings were 45 cents. While the earnings came in above expectations, they were significantly lower from the year-earlier level mainly due to lower utilization. The company’s deepwater and midwater fleets were experiencing lower utilization rates due to out-of-service time. Revenue from Pride’s eight-rig Deepwater fleet was $191.8 million, down approximately 32% sequentially. Deepwater operating earnings also decreased nearly 43% sequentially to $71.8 million. The sequential decrease in revenue was primarily due to lower utilization level. Average dayrate for the Deepwater fleet was $343,200 during the quarter, compared to $338,500 in the last quarter.
