It had an unbelievable second quarter in 2012, largely due to strong iPhone sales – again. Analysts last month tried to read between the lines on earnings reports from Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T), and figured there would be lower iPhones unit sales. The stock got pretty beat up for week. However, Apple showed that iPhone distribution isn’t a two-trick pony. I’m certainly bullish on Apple, but I also don’t want to tie up all the money it takes to acquire shares in the $600-range. Below I’ll show you a more affordable way to play Apple’s expected growth, but first let me show you why I’m so confident in the

Benchmarks struggled to find definite direction yesterday as the lack of news left them swinging between small gains and losses. By the closing bell, the energy sector had dented the S&P 500, while investors’ apprehensions about Hewlett-Packard’s decision of merging its printing and personal computing businesses dragged down the Dow. However, tech shares boosted the Nasdaq into the positive zone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 0.3% to settle at 13,124.62. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) edged down 0.2% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,402.89. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index was the only gainer among the other benchmarks and moved up by 0.04% to settle at 3,075.32. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was down 2.9% and finished at 15.13. Total volumes on the New York

Despite solid revenue growth, Priceline.com Inc (PCLN) missed the Zacks Consensus by 20 cents, as higher stock based compensation and a higher tax rate impacted results. However, the solid guidance drove share prices up 6.57% in after-hours trading. Revenue Priceline reported revenue of $990.7 million in the quarter, representing a sequential decline of 31.8% and a year-over-year increase of 35.5%. This was better than management’s guidance of $947 million (at the mid-point) and consensus expectations of $967.9 million. Volumes were impacted across the business, with hotel room nights, rental car days and airline tickets all declining double-digits on a sequential basis, although they were up from last year. Ticket volumes were again softer than the other two, similar to Expedia Inc (EXPE), which also saw softness in the area. Specifically,

While the number of legal proceedings against online travel companies/agents (OTCs/OTAs) continues to increase, there are some positive trends in recent rulings. The wins in Texas and California courts are big positives for OTAs, such as Expedia (EXPE), Priceline.com (PCLN), Orbitz Worldwide (OWW) and Travelocity. Particularly Expedia, since the company is being held liable for the bulk of the back taxes. The OTA mouthpiece Interactive Travel Services Association (ITSA) has been talking about “the correct interpretation of law” by the courts in the above-mentioned states, trying to arouse sentiments by playing the “unproductive litigation” card that was “wasting taxpayer resources.” This rhetoric aside, it appears reasonable that the OTAs should receive compensation for the information and services they provide and on which they pay taxes.
Google Inc’s (GOOG) revamped air ticket portal launched without much fanfare on Tuesday. Without a doubt, the search giant is entering the travel market, something made easy with its acquisition of ITA Software, which was recently cleared by the Justice Department. As may be expected with any strategic acquisition, there was a significant amount of controversy and opposition from other companies offering travel services or dependent on ITA technology, such as Microsoft Corp (MSFT), Kayak and Expedia Inc (EXPE). Priceline.com (PCLN) was less affected, although its CEO Jeffrey Boyd mentioned that Google was stepping on its toes with its new Hotel Finder site and the ITA acquisition. Kayak stated that its technology was superior and that it was ready to take on the competition from Google. Some bravado, considering the

Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

The industry is evolving very rapidly, so data collection and evaluation are particularly difficult. Consequently, one has to rely largely on surveys by both government and private agencies. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the manufacturing sector is the largest contributor to e-commerce sales (42% of their total shipments), followed by merchant wholesalers (23.4% of their total sales). These two segments make up the business-to-business category. Retailers and service providers generated just 4.0% and 2.3%, respectively of their revenues online, a slightly higher percentage than they were in the prior year. The Bureau categorizes these two segments as business-to-consumer. The business-to-business category makes up 91% of total e-commerce sales, with the balance coming from

The negative build-up over the last few days to today’s jobs report turned out to be completely off the mark. We got an impressive jobs report this morning, with the private sector coming up with one of its best showings in a long time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the creation of 244,000 jobs in April, handily coming ahead of expectations. This is one of the best jobs report in a very long time. Importantly, the private sector added 268,000 jobs in April, up from the March tally of 231,000, with broad-based gains across all sectors. On the negative side, the unemployment rate jumped to 9% in April from 8.8% in March, reversing the rapid decline of the preceding months.
Priceline.com (PCLN) is one of the leading online travel companies in the world. Priceline’s fourth quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus and management expects strong double-digit bookings growth in the next quarter, with international growing much faster than domestic. The secular growth trend in the online travel space, Priceline’s own business momentum, international growth opportunities, good execution, prudent marketing strategy and strong financial position are likely to drive upside to the shares. While occupancy tax-related litigation remains an overhang, it is likely to have the same impact on all peer companies. With demand strengthening considerably following the recession, we remain optimistic. We therefore have an Outperform rating on PCLN shares.
Amazon.com (AMZN) reported first quarter earnings that beat the Zacks Consensus by 6.45%. The positive earnings surprise was less than in prior quarters, as estimates were already adjusted to reflect pre-recession type growth. First Quarter Highlights Earnings were negatively impacted by competitive pricing, mix and currency, with the improvement in North American margins offsetting the decline in International. However, the company saw solid growth in revenue. Revenue increase of 45.9% from the year-ago quarter exceeded the high end of management’s guidance of a 32% to 43% increase. The improvement was attributable to a 40% growth in units and an increase in active customer accounts to 114 million, which included Chinese customers for the first time. Amazon also benefited from higher third-party sales and a 22% increase in active seller accounts.

Shares slid 12.11% after hours, as the big miss took investors by surprise. We believe that the uncertainty regarding near-term performance was also responsible for the negative sentiment, since second-quarter guidance was quite good.
The Electronic Commerce, or e-commerce, industry is one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy. The industry is still evolving, so data collection and evaluation are particularly difficult. Consequently, one has to rely largely on surveys by both government and private agencies. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the manufacturing sector is the largest contributor to e-commerce sales (35% of total shipments), followed by merchant wholesalers (21.2%). These two segments make up the business-to-business category. While retailers and service providers generated just 3.2% and 1.6% of their revenues online, these are the fastest growing segments. The Bureau categorizes these two segments as business-to-consumer. The company grew strongly in 2008 and the growth rate has continued through the first three quarters of 2009 despite recessionary pressures. The current momentum in the business, international growth opportunities, good execution, prudent marketing strategy and strong financial position are positives.
Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services has upgraded Priceline.com’s (PCLN) rating from BB- to BB. S&P analyst Andy Liu stated that the revision was based on the company’s strong results and market share gains versus the other major online travel companies, Expedia Inc. (EXPE) and Orbitz Worldwide (OWW). Both Priceline and Expedia beat the Zacks Consensus estimate in the last-reported quarter, although Priceline beat both revenue and EPS estimates by a wider margin. Priceline’s revenue was up double-digits, both sequentially and year over year. Room nights, airline ticket units and rental car days were up 56.3%, 30.2% and11.6%, respectively from the year-ago quarter. In comparison, Expedia’s room night and air ticket volumes were up 27.6% and 27.0%, respectively on a year-over-year basis. Therefore, it is clear that Priceline outgrew Expedia in

We are downgrading shares of Expedia Inc. (EXPE) from Outperform to Neutral. The company reported strong results in the last quarter, but continued to benefit from promotional inventories provided by its hotel partners. When results are stripped off the benefits of promotional activities, a softer demand environment could become evident. We also do not expect the company to report better than seasonal sales growth in the current quarter. The company has sacrificed booking fees this year, which is telling on the average daily rates (ADRs). Therefore, ADRs could be the metric to watch rather than room nights at this point of time. We are also concerned about the incidence of transient occupancy taxes.
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Healthcare Expert Wednesday, November 18, 2009: Issue #1140 To celebrate my parents’ anniversary, I took the family to see Grease last weekend. As musical theater buffs, I figured that they’d love the seeing the show, especially with my kids who had never seen a Broadway quality production. Unfortunately, they still haven’t. The show stunk. The “actor” who played Danny Zuko couldn’t act. And American Idol winner Taylor Hicks was so bad as Teen Angel, it was laughable. It was one of the worst productions I’ve ever seen – and I should know, as I’ve been in some pretty awful shows (if you saw Last Exit to Brooklyn in San Francisco in 1995, I apologize). But the purpose of this column is not a theater review, but rather
