The segment was among the most stable sectors in fiscal 2011 in terms of return. Fiscal 2011 witnessed continued volatility from the European debt crisis leading the U.S. Federal Reserve to reduce its growth forecast, raising projections for unemployment and leaning on buying more mortgage debt to tide over a troubled economy. The year has been hard on investors with major indexes registering low performances. The European debt crisis that plagued the markets last year will continue to worry investors in the coming period. In such a scenario we are hopeful about dividend paying utilities acting as a proxy to the asset classes of treasury bonds and gold.
Surprises are, by definition, unexpected. However, since we know that companies that report better-than-expected earnings tend to see their share prices rise after the announcement, and those that disappoint sink, it would be nice to be able to get in front of those that are likely to do better than expected and get out of the way of those which are going to disappoint. Not easy to do, but there is a way to improve your odds.
Income-oriented investors have yet another reason to be upset with the bond markets. Junk bond yields fell to a record low a few days ago and are staying near those levels. As of Wednesday evening, the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield index yielded a mere 6.68%, which isn’t much when you consider the risk of default. These low yields are just one sign of the bond market’s cheery mood. Corporations are finding plenty of buyers for their debt, and many offerings have been completed this week. Included in this week’s near-record level of junk bond offerings is beleaguered Chrysler, which is refinancing its loan package. Taking advantage of the low interest rates is good

OUTLOOK The Alternative Energy industry is going through a recovery after emerging from the global recession and the cascading fall in global crude oil prices. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track. The outlook for the U.S. and key emerging markets remains positive. In the first quarter of fiscal 2010, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.2%, while sale of electricity to the industrial sector, per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Incorporatedreased by 2.7%

In April, Industrial Production rose 0.8%, which was in line with consensus expectations. The revisions to previous months’ data was more or less a wash, with growth being revised up in March by 0.1% to 0.2%, and for January it was revised up by 0.2% to 1.2%. That was offset by a 0.4% downward revision to February to -0.1%. While that downward revision makes it no longer possible to say that Industrial Production has been rising every month since last June, the overall revisions don’t really change the picture that much. Behind the Headline Numbers When one looks just a bit beyond the headline numbers, the data looks even better than the 0.8% growth implies. For starters keep in mind that these are month to month changes, not annual rates.

Entergy Corporation’s (ETR) proposed spin-off of its non-utility Nuclear power business hit a regulatory road-block. The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) played spoilsport and rejected the spin-off request. NYPSC is apprehensive of the financial health of the resultant company (Enexus Energy Corporation). Entergy has been contemplating the spin-off since fiscal 2007 to separate its regulated utilities and open-market generation units. The new company – Enexus Energy Corporation will take over nuclear plants located in Pilgrim in Plymouth, Massachusetts; Vermont Yankee in Vernon, Vermont; Indian Point in Westchester County, New York; Fitzpatrick in Oswego County, New York; and the Palisades plant in Covert, Michigan. New Orleans-based Entergy is primarily engaged in electric power production and retail distribution. The agreement is the culmination of negotiations that began in November 2009 after the DOE selected CenterPoint Energy as one of the six utilities to receive the maximum smart grid grant under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. CenterPoint Energy plans to spend $4.1 billion in the next four years (2010 – 2013) focusing mainly on upgrading its electricity and natural gas distribution system and generation assets through projects like the advanced metering system.
