Recently, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) selected CVS Caremark (CVS) to manage pharmacy benefits for its preferred provider organization (PPO) health plans, catering to more than 346,000 members. The three-year contract, to be effective from January 1, 2012, represents about $565 million in annual drug spending. The contract also has the option of two one-year extensions. Prior to CVS, Medco Health Solutions (MHS) has been managing the business from July 1, 2006, which is dated to expire on December 31, 2011. CalPERS is presently working with both Medco and CVS to ensure a smooth transition for its members and physicians. This contract is significant for CVS as its pharmacy benefit management (PBM) business has been witnessing several challenges over the past few quarters. CalPERS, which spends approximately $7

Aetna Inc. (AET) has recently revealed that it has finally got green signal from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), to market its Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan products. In April 2010, the company was banned from offering these products to new members as some of the Medicare prescription drug plans offered between 2009 and 2010 had failed to comply with the regulatory requirements. Aetna’s Medicare products are regulated by the CMS. In April last year, the CMS had granted the company a limited waiver of these sanctions to allow it to continue enrolling eligible members into existing, contracted group Aetna Medicare Advantage Plans and Standalone PDPs through March 31, 2011. Consequently, the company’s 2011 Medicare membership was adversely affected because it did not participate in the 2010

As a result of the health care sector’s latest restrictions, Humana Inc. (HUM) plans to offer a quarterly dividend, besides raising the fiscal year 2011 forecast. Accordingly, Humana’s Board has initiated a quarterly cash dividend of 25 cents per share, payable on July 28 to shareholders of record on June 30. On an annual basis, the payout will represent a yield of nearly 1.4% based on April 25′s closing stock price. Humana is expected to spend about $42.5 million per quarter on its new dividend. Moreover, Humana has also decided to replace its share repurchase authorization of up to $250 million with an authorization for repurchases of up to $1 billion by June 30, 2013. In addition to the dividend declaration and the increase of the stock buyback plan, Humana

We downgrade our recommendation for American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) from Neutral to Underperform. Our downgrade is inspired by the refusal of its largest customer – Sinovel Wind Group Co. Ltd to accept further shipments. Sinovel is China’s largest and the world’s third largest wind turbine manufacturer. American Superconductor would be paying a high price for its over-dependence on Sinovel. On March 31, 2011, Sinovel bogged down by high inventory levels refused to accept contracted shipments of 1.5 MW and 3 MW wind turbine core electrical components and spare parts from American Superconductor. Sinovel also was unable to pay for past shipments worth $56 million. Sinovel represented approximately 75% of American Superconductor’s total revenue for the nine month period ending December 31, 2010. American Superconductor expects the situation to continue till

On the back of strong fourth quarter results, we recently upgraded Humana, Inc. (HUM) to Outperform. The company reported a strong fourth quarter on the heels of improved performance in its operations, lower commercial medical cost trends and surplus cash flow generation in 2010, which also resulted in share buybacks. Results outshone the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 85 cents. Humana recently completed the acquisition of Concentra Inc. for $790 million in cash on December 22, 2010. Consequently, Humana expects an increase in its consolidated revenue for 2011. Concentra produces approximately $800 million of revenues annually from 240 workplace health-care facilities and more than 300 medical centers in 42 states. Moreover, the acquisition will provide access to Humana’s medical members in certain geographical areas. With the closure of the acquisition of Concentra,

The deal will see New West Physicians provide health care services to individuals and families enrolled in a commercial health plan with Humana.
OVERVIEW The healthcare sector comprises different industries, ranging from managed care organizations, healthcare facilities providers and medical devices manufacturers to biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Consequently, we believe that investors in this sector should be mindful of the different drivers and appropriate metrics associated with the various sub-sectors. In the present scenario, investor sentiment in healthcare continues to be driven by decisions in Congress related to government funding and the state of the broader economy. In view of the ongoing healthcare reform debate in Congress, healthcare policy changes remain an important indicator to investing in the sector. Even though legislation — which aims to cover nearly all Americans by providing government subsidies to help pay premiums irrespective of health or income — was passed in the House of Representatives, it is
