This was stated by Suzanne G. Killian, a senior associate director of the Fed, at a congressional hearing in Brooklyn. The banks that were held responsible for wrongly foreclosing homeowners’ properties include EverBank, The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), HSBC Holdings Plc (HBC), PNC Financial Services Group (PNC), MetLife Inc. (MET), OneWest Bank, SunTrust Banks (STI) and U.S. Bancorp (USB). However, the amounts of penalties have not been disclosed. The nation’s mortgage servicers were under the radar for the alleged used of ‘robo-signers’ ? employees who sign hundreds of documents a day without verifying decisive information like the previously outstanding amounts of borrowers.
Can we really have a rally without the financials? Earnings have been mixed for the financials. Let’s take a deeper look at the players in each segment and see if we can’t come to a consensus as to whether or not a rally can be supported. The Zacks Rank for most of these banks is a #3 Rank (Hold) with only Goldman Sachs (GS) having a Zanks #5 Rank (Strong Sell). Investment Banks The capital markets have been weak, especially with the “IPO window” getting slammed shut around the time that Groupon was looking to make its public offering. Goldman Sachs (GS) beat on the bottom line but missed on the top line and saw revenues decline 30% year over year. The beat was the result of significant cost cutting.

The most important earnings report this morning is from Goldman Sachs (GS), which came out with an earnings beat, though its revenue numbers missed expectations. Earnings estimates for the Wall Street titan had come down significantly in recent weeks to

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

The company has signed a definitive agreement to purchase 27 branches from Flagstar Bank, a subsidiary of Flagstar Bancorp Inc. (FBC).
Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

On Tuesday, Bank of New York Mellon Corporation (BK) announced the completion of its acquisition of Chicago-based Talon Asset Management’s wealth management arm, which presently has over $800 million in assets under management. BNY Mellon had announced the deal in April but did not disclose the terms of the agreement. The company stated that the transaction does not include Talon’s hedge fund and private equity businesses. The acquired unit will be integrated into the company’s Investment Management business. Talon, currently managing $1.2 billion in assets, is a diversified investment management firm that primarily focuses on delivering superior risk-adjusted returns.
We have reiterated our Neutral recommendation on PNC Financial Services Group Inc. (PNC). The reaffirmation follows a detailed analysis of the company’s fundamentals, its strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and recent acquisitions sprees as well as the current economic environment. PNC Financial’s first-quarter 2011 adjusted earnings of $1.57 per share were ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.37. Results reflected a substantial contraction in provision for credit losses, lower non-interest expenses, a strong balance sheet and an improved credit quality. However, revenues were lower due to a challenging operating environment. PNC Financial stands solid from the balance sheet perspective. The company was core funded with a loan to deposit ratio of 82% as of March 31, 2011 and a strong bank liquidity position to support growth. We expect the company to

Some of the big U.S. banks are running the risk of losing millions of customers this year following rises in many of their fees, USAToday.com reported yesterday. Increased or new fees along with the retraction of debit card reward programs are making it difficult for customers to continue their basic banking activities. Customers are thus opting alternative institutions like community banks and non-profit credit unions, which charge substantially lower or zero fees to regular customers. The new regulations for protecting consumers and retailers have forced banks to reduce fees for credit cards, debit cards and overdrafts, causing revenue losses in the billions. (PNC) and The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) have already changed their policy regarding ATM usage in order to collect more fee income. Though other banks including Bank of America Corporation (BAC) and Citigroup Inc. (C) have not issued any fresh guidelines about ATM withdrawal fees, they are also contemplating such a move. JPMorgan hiked its ATM fees for withdrawal from non-customers to $4 and $5 in Texas and Illinois, respectively, on a trial basis. These

According to the report, the chaos resulting from foreclosure paperwork flaws could result in massive losses for banks and a new quandary for the housing market. Results also soared from the earnings of 82 cents in the prior-year quarter. The better-than-expected numbers were primarily supported by a slowdown in provision for credit losses, which more than offset a pressure on trading revenues, investment banking revenues and non-interest income. Strong mortgage loan production by Retail Financial Services, higher Card Services sales volume and strong net inflows in Asset Management were also impressive during the quarter. Quarter in Detail Net income available to common shareholders was $4.4 billion, up 23% from $3.6 billion in the prior-year quarter. A significantly lower provision for credit losses primarily drove the results. However, lower revenues and higher non-interest

The biggest lenders have already discovered enough paperwork flaws to suspend their foreclosure processing. As a precautionary measure, lawmakers have asked several other lenders to halt their processes as well, triggering fears of sending the housing crisis into a tailspin. This move follows the rising concerns of legislators and state prosecutors about whether homes are being seized on the basis of false data.
According to a government report released on Tuesday, the number of banks on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) list of problem institutions in the second quarter grew to 829 from 775 in the previous quarter and 416 in the year-ago quarter. This is the highest since the savings and loan crisis in the early 1990s. Banks that feature on the problem list are most likely to fail, though some may still scrape through. As of now, only about 13% of banks on the FDIC’s problem list have actually failed so far. What is interesting is that this percentage is likely to change; though the problem list is growing at a slower pace, bank failures are accelerating. The How and Why of Bank Failures There have been 118 bank failures

The ongoing economic volatility took its toll on a few more banks last week. Eight more banks including ShoreBank, a big community bank based in Chicago, were shuttered by the U.S. regulators on Friday. This takes the total number of bank failures to 118 so far in 2010, compared with 140 in 2009, 25 in 2008 and 3 in 2007. Although the economy is showing signs of a gradual recovery with the stabilization of large financial institutions, small banks continue to be impacted by tumbling home prices, soaring loan defaults and a high unemployment rate. While we expect the overall economic recovery to gain momentum soon, there remain lingering concerns in the banking industry. Failure of both residential and commercial real estate loans as a result of the credit crisis

Regional bank First Niagara Financial Group Inc. (FNFG) said on Thursday that it will acquire NewAlliance Bancshares Inc. (NAL) in a $1.5 billion cash and stock deal that would boost its presence in New England. This is the largest unassisted deal announcement in U.S. Banking since the financial crisis in mid 2008. According to Buffalo-based First Niagara, the combined entity would become one of the top 25 banks of the nation, with more than $29 billion in assets which will include more than $14 billion in loans. The shareholders of NewAlliance will get cash or stock at a ratio of 1.1 shares of First Niagara for each NewAlliance share. Investors can also opt for a combination of stock and cash, the banks said in a statement. Based on the closing

On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Bank of America Corporation (BAC) is planning to sell its 34.1% (64.7 million common and preferred shares) stake in BlackRock Inc. (BLK). BofA is considering this sale as it does not view the BlackRock stake as a core earnings asset. However, no talks have started regarding when and how the company may trim its holdings. This is part of BofA’s effort to reduce investments and units that are not performing well to earn under its retail banking, capital market units, home lending and wealth management. A lock period, which stopped BofA from selling its stake in BlackRock, expired in September 2009. BlackRock still has the first right to refuse buying back shares from the company. However, there remain some limitations regarding how much

Citigroup Inc. (C) has raised its estimates of long-term debts for full year 2010, according to a recent second quarter 2010 results filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This comes as part of Citi’s efforts to strengthen its structural liquidity and extend the duration of liabilities that support its businesses. For full year 2010, Citi currently expects to issue approximately $18 billion to $21 billion in long-term debt. This is $3 billion to $6 billion above the prior expectations. The projected issuance of $18 billion to $21 billion is lower than the $35 billion of expected maturities during the year. The remaining balance would have to be financed through the company’s strategic capital management initiatives. However, Citi will continue to review and adjust its funding and liquidity requirements for
