Stocks in the Consumer Staples sector carried out their traditional defensive role as the broader equity markets came under pressure over concerns about the prolonged weak US economy and the debt crisis in Europe. But the group has been a laggard as momentum returned to the market over the last three months. In 2011, the sector index grew 10.5% versus a flat finish for the S&P 500 index. The group’s defensive attributes stem from its ability to buck sluggish economic growth as food, beverage, household products and cosmetics companies that manufacture and market non-durable consumables are considered essential to daily life, such as food, drink, toothpaste, deodorants, toilet paper, etc. Although staples’ top-line is expected to continue the uptrend of the last few quarters going forward, margins will remain under

The world’s leading consumer product maker, Procter & Gamble Company (PG) has announced that it will slash over 4,000 non-manufacturing jobs during the current fiscal year. This declaration follows the already planned 1,600 job losses, which was announced by the company at the beginning of February 2012. P&G anticipates that by trimming down 5, 700 jobs, it will save up to $10 billion of cost, including $1 billion in marketing costs and $3 billion in overhead costs, by the end of the fiscal year ending in June 2016. Out of its 129,000 employees, the company employs about 57,000 people as non-manufacturing staff. The job cuts announced makes almost 10% of thiswork force. The process of retrenchment is scheduled to be completed by the end of the fiscal year ending June

And they’ve hired five underwriters for the job, with Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) taking the lead role. The company is currently looking at a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion, which would be one of the largest initial public offerings in U.S. history. These Numbers Make No Sense… Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011, and a nice $1 billion in net income. For those of us who truly value fundamentals: If Facebook goes public and hits its high end with a $100-billion market cap – that means it would have a P/E of 100 times trailing earnings. The headlines on that count are on the weak side. In its first read on the fourth quarter of 2011, the commerce department reported that the U.S. economy expanded at a lower than expected 2.8% pace in the last quarter of 2011, up from the third quarter’s 1.8% growth rate. The expectation was for the GDP number to be 3%, with many looking for growth rates above that level. Weak spending by the government and consumers drove the miss. It is using the data of the famous search engine Google Inc. Google tracked the address of several flu-related Web searchers from 2003 to 2008, and formed a database of most flu-prone regions. The database was developed to help public health officials and health professionals to better respond to seasonal epidemics.
Customers buying goods from Walmart Inc. (WMT) can heave a sigh of relief as the world’s biggest retailer teams up with online giant Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) to eliminate cumbersome packaging by manufacturers. The two retail giants are also pushing other biggies like Procter & Gamble Company (PG) to design user-friendly packaging materials and do away with nearly impenetrable plastic packaging, known as clamshells.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average see-sawed between positive and negative territory, while the markets finished mixed on Friday amid global economic concerns. Encouraging economic reports helped the markets prevent another heavy slide on the closing day of the week, but they were not strong enough to wash out the huge losses suffered through the week as the benchmarks ended their worst week in almost two years. The Dow closed with modest gains at 11,444.61, up 0.5%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) declined marginally, by 0.06% to settle at 1,199.38. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index shed 0.9% and closed the day at 2,532.41. In what was the worst week for markets in more than two years, the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq plunged 5.8%, 7.2% and 8.1%, respectively.

Earnings season will soon be upon us again. What the market will be looking for are those companies that come in with higher-than-expected earnings to reward, and for those firms that disappoint to punish. However, there will be cases where one company beats by a small amount, say $0.05 or 2.5%, and there is a big jump in the price of a stock in reaction, but on the same day there might be another firm that beats by $0.10 or 10%, and it is treated as a relative non-event by the market. Why is that? Well, too much of the emphasis will be one-dimensional — by what percentage or dollar amount did the actual result come in above or below the estimate? The significance of a percentage beat also varies

Procter and Gamble (PG) has announced that it will delay the launch of the Tide Pods Liquid laundry tablets to early 2012 instead of September this year, as decided earlier. The chain disclosed that it was compelled to postpone the revolutionary launch till next year on grounds of supply constraints, which may make it impossible for the company to meet the huge demand forecasted. Moreover, the mega launch planned for an item like Tide Pods warrants heavy marketing and advertising spending. And a huge $150 million marketing budget allocated for Tide Pods’ launch could be a seer waste if it somehow misses to meet the potential demand. The three-chamber Tide Pods are similar to water-soluble tablets for dishwashers, which have been embraced by consumers whole heartedly. Analysts say that the

Stocks in the Consumer Staples sector have traditionally performed better than the stock market, and especially cyclical companies, during market declines. We are seeing evidence of this at present — consumer staple stocks have started shining again as concerns about the economy’s growth momentum have taken center stage. The fundamental explanation for this behavior is that food, beverage, household products and cosmetics companies manufacture and market brand name consumable products, most of which are considered essential to daily life, such as food, drink, toothpaste, deodorants, toilet paper, etc. Since product demand is relatively stable, the companies generally report earnings in line with expectations. Beverage companies, however, are able to grow faster at the high single-digit to low double-digit rate given growing penetration rates. But, cosmetics companies can grow earnings a

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U‘s Senior Analyst Wednesday, May 4, 2011: Issue #1505 There’s an old saying; when the going gets tough, the tough buy consumer staples stocks – or something like that. Historically, the sector has been viewed as a defensive position. It makes sense. Even if the economy stinks, you’re still going to brush your teeth, use the toilet and feed your kids (at least I hope you are). In the past year, the consumer staples sector, as measured by the Consumer Staples Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLP), is up 14.9 percent, outperforming the S&P 500?s rise of 13.6 percent. John Roque, Managing Director at WJB Capital, points out that consumer staples and the S&P 500 are closely correlated.
Energizer Holdings Inc. (ENR) reported second quarter 2011 non-GAAP earnings (excluding charges) of $1.04 per share, comprehensively beating the Zacks Consensus estimate of 91 cents per share. The upside surprise was driven by better-than-expected top-line growth. Operating Performance Earnings per share (EPS) on a non-GAAP basis decreased 15.4% year over year from $1.23 reported in the prior-year quarter. Including charges and one-time items of 49 cents, EPS came in at 55 cents in the quarter, down 56.0% year over year from $1.25. Gross margin was 45.5% compared with 47.8% in the year-ago quarter. The decline was primarily credited to the negative impact of approximately 180 basis points (bps) on margins arising from the increased coupon and trade promotional activity for the Schick Hydro product launch. We also have a disappointing Jobless Claims report this morning, reversing the gains that we have been seeing in this key report. These unfavorable reports will weigh on the market today, reversing the positive momentum of the last few days. U.S. economic growth momentum weakened significantly in the first quarter, producing a sub-par growth rate of 1.8%, inline with consensus growth expectations. The economy grew at a 3.1% pace in the fourth quarter and a 2.6% rate in the third quarter of 2010. While the headline number is disappointing, the first quarter slowdown likely resulted from temporary factors that are expected to reverse in the coming quarters. The hike is applicable on the company’s common stock and on the Series A and Series B ESOP convertible Class A Preferred stock. The increased dividend will be paid on or after May 16, 2011 to shareholders on record as on April 29, 2011. The increase in dividend reflects the company’s sound financial position and well-defined future prospects. Signs of recovery in the economy have made share buybacks and dividend increases a common factor among companies sitting on ample cash. Apart from enhancing shareholders’ return, such a strategy lifts the market value of the stock. PG reported modest results for the second quarter of 2011. Net earnings

Clorox Corporation (CLX) posted a marginal increase in second-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings of 68 cents a share compared with 66 cents in the year-ago quarter, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 62 cents. Clorox’s net sales during the quarter declined 3.0% year over year to $1,179 million from $1,215 million in the year-ago quarter, marginally surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,176 million. The decline was primarily attributable to lower volume, unfavorable impact of the Venezuelan currency devaluation and higher trade-promotion spending, partially offset by increased pricing. Total volume in the quarter dropped 3% due to lesser shipments of Clorox disinfecting wipes and other disinfecting products resulting from the H1N1 flu pandemic, as well as fragile trends across several of the company’s U.S. categories.
Energizer Holdings Inc. (ENR) reported first quarter 2011 non-GAAP earnings (excluding charges) of $1.68 per share, well below the Zacks Consensus of $1.92 per share, based on increased expenses, poor margins and lower profit from the battery business in the quarter. Earnings per share (EPS) declined 9.2% year over year. Including charges and one-time items, earnings came in at $1.55 per share in the quarter, down 12.9% year over year from $1.78. Gross margin was 47.1%, compared with 47.6% in the year-ago quarter. The decline was primarily attributable to increased coupon and trade promotional activity for the Schick Hydro product launch that adversely affected margin by approximately 120 basis points. The decline was partially offset by a favorable product mix. Spending on advertising and promotion (A&P) escalated 45.1% year over

Worries about state and local government debt continue to drive money out of municipal (aka “muni”) bond funds. The Investment Company Institute (ICI) calculates that muni bond funds incurred $2.4 billion worth of outflows last week. This was the 10th consecutive week of outflows. Since the week of November 10, cumulative outflows have exceeded $25 billion. (The ICI monitors inflows and outflows for more than 95% of mutual fund assets. The data reflects portfolio changes for both individual and institutional investors.) The outflows reflect concerns over fiscal problems at state, county and local governments. Declines in tax revenues caused by a weak economy combined with stretched budgets are the primary culprits, as you know. A lack of effective budgeting and planning is compounding matters for certain government entities. These are
