Novartis’ (NVS) cancer drug Afinitor took a significant step forward, as the company once again presented encouraging data from late-stage trials of Afinitor for the treatment of breast cancer, an indication for which management estimates sales potential in excess of $1 billion. Afinitor is not yet approved for the treatment of breast cancer. The pivotal late-stage study (BOLERO-2) evaluated the use of Afinitor in combination with Pfizer’s (PFE) Aromasin (a hormonal therapy) in postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer whose disease has progressed, despite treatment with hormonal therapies like Novartis’ Femara or AstraZeneca’s (AZN) Arimidex. The long-term data showed that Afinitor plus Aromasin expanded progression-free survival (PFS), or time, without causing tumor growth in patients, by more than two times versus Aromasin alone. Treatment with Afinitor improved the PFS to

It seems Novartis AG’s (NVS) breast cancer drug, Afinitor (everolimus), is getting into a habit of delivering positive news. Right after the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended approval of Afinitor last week for the treatment of subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGA), the drug impressed again this week with positive interim results from a pivotal late-stage trial (BOLERO-2). BOLERO-2 evaluated Afinitor in combination with exemestane versus placebo plus exemestane in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive locally-advanced breast cancer, whose disease progressed, despite treatment with the nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors letrozole or anastrozole. The trial results demonstrated that patients with advanced breast cancer who were dosed Afinitor in combination with exemestane, experienced significantly extended progression-free survival (PFS), as compared to patients who received

The candidate is being evaluated for the treatment of advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The phase II trial (ERIVANCE BCC) involved patients whose lesions could not be operated, or for whom surgery would result in substantial deformity. The study, which enrolled 104 patients with advanced BCC including 71 patients with locally advanced BCC (laBCC) and 33 patients with metastatic BCC (mBCC), demonstrated that vismodegib substantially shrank tumors or healed visible lesions in 43% of patients with laBCC and 30% of patients with mBCC. The median duration of progression-free survival (PFS) was 9.5 months. Moreover, 75% of the patients in the study experienced tumor shrinkage or healing of visible lesions, or a reduction on further growth of tumors

We have upgraded our recommendation on Northern Trust Corporation (NTRS) to Neutral from Underperform attributed to synergies expected from the recent acquisitions. In April, Northern Trust reported first-quarter 2011 earnings of 59 cents per share, which was below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 65 cents. The decrease was attributable to low interest rate environment, which in turn, negatively affected net interest margin. In the reported quarter, earnings per share benefited from the reduction of an indemnification liability related to Visa Inc. (V). The related pre-tax expense reduction summed up to $10.1 million ($6.4 million after tax, or 2 cents per share). Despite the current sluggish environment, the company has made further investments in businesses to continue to serve the clients in the U.S. and around the world.
With the 10-year T-note yielding only 3.21%, investors interested in getting income from their investments are in sort of a tough place. Dividend-paying stocks are a very good place to look for a replacement. One thing you know for sure is that the coupon payment on a 10-year note is not going to rise. A yield of 3.21% does not offer much of a cushion against inflation. What is inflation likely to average over the next 10 years? I have no idea, but based on the spread between the regular 10-year note, and the 10-year TIPS, the market is implicitly expecting a rate of about 2.50%, which is pretty much in line with the historical experience (headline CPI) over the last 20 years of 2.57%. While core inflation is the

We have downgraded our recommendation on Northern Trust Corporation (NTRS) to Underperform from Neutral, as the current operating environment is putting pressure on earnings. Though we expect the company to benefit from rising interest rates, more visibility is needed to get positive on the stock. In January, NTRS’s fourth-quarter earnings of 64 cents per share were below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 71 cents. The decrease was due to a low interest rate, which in turn negatively affected net interest income and trust fees. NTRS’s net interest margin (NIM) has been shrinking for the past eight quarters. NIM is expected to remain under pressure driven by the low interest rate environment amid weakening industry-wide credit trends. We also expect the company to suffer from weak loan demand in several of the markets

Written by Grant Zeng, CFA ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (IMUC) Targeting Cancer Stem Cells: The Root Cause of Cancer Cancer treatment with therapeutics has made great progress in the past decade. Chemotherapy has long been the only option for oncologists to fight cancers. But the toxicities associated with chemotherapeutics have limited their use. While killing cancer cells, chemotherapeutic agents also kill healthy cells within the body making them highly toxic to humans. The situation changed when targeted therapy entered into the market a decade ago. Targeted therapeutic agents selectively kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unattacked. The combination of chemotherapy and targeted therapy has become the standard regime of cancer treatment currently. However, the advent of targeted therapy has not solved the long existing, notorious problem of cancer treatment: relapse, or

Northern Trust Corp.’s (NTRS) fourth quarter earnings of 64 cents per share were below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 72 cents. Last year, the company reported a gain of 61 cents per share. Earnings benefited mainly from a decrease in loan loss provisions. Net interest income totaled $240.1 million, down 17% year over year. Net interest margin (NIM) was 1.44%, down from 1.68% in the prior-year quarter. The decline in NIM and the resulting impact on net interest income is a result of the significant drop in interest rates, which has dramatically reduced the interest rate spread on short-term assets and the value of non-interest related funds. Non-interest income increased 8% year-over-year to $667.5 million due to an increase in trust, investment and other servicing fees, partially offset by lower

Yesterday, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) received some good news with the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of Votrient (pazopanib) for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma [RCC], a form of kidney cancer. However, the FDA approval does not come as a surprise to us as earlier this month the FDA’s Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) had voted unanimously in favor of the drug. The favorable recommendation was based on encouraging results from a phase III trial of Votrient, in which the drug reduced the risk of tumor progression or death by 54% compared to placebo, regardless of prior treatment. The overall median progression-free survival (PFS) was 9.2 months with Votrient and 4.2 months with placebo. For both treatment naïve patients and those who received cytokine-based treatment, the

The company reported that patients treated with Campath and Fludara (FluCAM) experienced a significant improvement in progression free survival (PFS), compared to patients receiving only Fludara. The study was designed to detect at least a 50% overall improvement in PFS in the FluCAM arm compared to the Fludara arm.
