The latest disclosure by the world’s largest computer maker Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) confirms that it has completed the acquisition of the smartphone maker Palm Inc. (PALM) for $5.70 per share in cash. This acquisition is expected to help Hewlett-Packard enter the highly profitable smartphone business, where every other IT company appears to be trying its hand. The smartphone market is valued at $100.0 billion, and Hewlett-Packard is trying to grab a chunk of this profitable business. However, the going will not be easy, since competition is particularly stiff. As per the latest findings of “Network World”, Linux-enabled smartphones, coupled with the success of Google‘s (GOOG) Android, are expected to constitute 33.0% of the global smartphone market in 2015. The firm is of the opinion that more than 60,000 smartphones on

The world’s largest personal computer and server maker, Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) recently entered into a three-year contract with Avaya Inc. As per this agreement, HP’s product line will incorporate some Avaya business communication products. The agreement comes as no surprise, because HP has been testing the waters outside its core hardware market for some time now. With the acquisition of 3Com, the company was able to add networking products. However, this would still not position it strongly enough versus the Unified Communications System (“UCS”), launched by Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) last year. With the Avaya deal, HP intends to offer customers an attractive bundle consisting of hardware and software from Avaya (which HP is essentially selling for Avaya) and its own proprietary UCS management services. Interestingly, Microsoft Corp (MSFT) is

In retaliation to the patent infringement suit filed by Apple Inc. (AAPL) on HTC Corp. some time back, the Taiwanese handset maker HTC filed a counter complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission, accusing Apple of violating five of its patented technologies related to mobile phones, and thereby requesting for a ban on the import, marketing and sale of some of Apple’s mobile devices in the United States, which are currently manufactured outside the country. Specifically, HTC alleged that Apple violated its patent relating to technologies that help the iPhone manage power and handle phone directories, as well as a technology that helps the newly launched iPad to store data, while it is in sleep mode. This is not the first of legal battles between Apple and other tech majors.

The world’s largest computer maker Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) disclosed on Wednesday that it would be taking over the ailing smartphone company Palm Inc. (PALM) for $1.2 billion. This represents a whopping 53.6% premium to its market capitalization at the end of the day. The acquisition is expected to provide HP a foothold in the smartphone market, strengthening its competitive position versus Dell Inc. (DELL), which recently entered the market with its proprietary smartphone. HP’s interest in the company could also have something to do with Palm’s indigenous software that can run not only mobile phones but also other types of mobile computing devices. Historically, HP has always benefited from adopting technologies from acquired companies. The takeover is a windfall for Palm shareholders, since we believe it would be difficult for

April 15, 2010 The financial markets always seem to do something that causes me to shake my head and chuckle. This week it involved smart phone maker Palm (PALM). Shares of the stock jumped on reports that the company has put itself up for sale and is working with investment banks to find a buyer. PALM rose even higher yesterday after a new regulatory filing revealed that Harbinger Capital acquired a 9.48% stake in the company. The problem is that PALM is on the verge of bankruptcy. It is burning through cash and has more debt than assets, meaning that it has negative book value. Its phones aren’t selling very well either. In fact, during its last conference call, the company admitted that resellers’ inventories of Palm phones were too

China Telecom (CHA) announced 2009 results with adjusted earnings per ADS of US$2.40 missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of US$2.57. Adjusted earnings exclude amortization of upfront connection fees and impairment losses. The incumbent Chinese fixed-line operator reported an adjusted net income of RMB13.27 billion (US$1.95 billion), down 33.9% year-over-year. The drop in profit is primarily attributable to higher marketing expenses associated with the deployment of the company’s 3G wireless services and aggressive handset roll-outs. China Telecom reported a 47% year-over-year increase in SG&A costs (including mobile handset subsidies). Reported net income of RMB14.42 billion (US$2.14 billion) or RMB0.18 per share (US$2.65 per ADS) represents an increase from RMB884 million (US$130 million) a year ago, which was hit by one-time impairment charges on Personal Handyphone System (PHS) assets and losses related

We do not see a turnaround at Palm Inc. (PALM) in the near future. The shares fell 14.5% after the market closed yesterday, following the company’s third-quarter of fiscal 2010 earnings announcement. The shares have fallen by more than 50% this year. Although its loss narrowed in the quarter, driven by higher year-over-year sales, Palm provided disappointing revenue guidance for the fourth quarter. Management said that the revenue in the fourth quarter would come in below expectations, as a result of lower sales and reduced demand for both the Pre and Pixi smartphones at its exclusive carriers, Sprint (S) and Verizon (VZ). Palm expects to generate just $150 million in revenue in the fourth-quarter versus $113.2 million generated in the year-ago period. While this is up year over year, it

I counted nearly 30 of his colleagues, helping throngs of people parked in front of every counter. That was the scene at my local Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) store two days before Christmas. And one look at the company’s share price suggests that it’s a scene replicated at hundreds of other Apple stores across the United States and abroad. When I last wrote about Apple on August 21, 2009, shares of the consumer electronics giant were trading for about $169. If you bought the stock back then, you’d

We do not see a turnaround at Palm Inc. (PALM) in the near future. The shares fell 8.7% after market closed yesterday, following the company’s second-quarter of fiscal 2010 earnings announcement. Although its loss narrowed, driven by improved sales of the new line of webOS (operating system), revenue declined considerably compared to the year-ago period. Revenue on a GAAP basis for the quarter came in at $78.1 million, a sharp decline of 59.2% from the year-ago quarter. While Palm expects to focus on expanding distribution with more carriers and boosting its customer base, we believe the biggest challenges facing the company are an increase in its carrier base and customer preference for its smartphone over its competitors. Palm defers revenue from products that run its new WebOS to later periods.

The economic downturn has weighed heavily on the fortunes of the Consumer Electronics industry. Consumer electronics sales stagnated in 2008 and through most of 2009 as a result of the deteriorating economic conditions in the U.S. With little to no revenue growth, consumer electronics companies have been resorting to cost-cutting and share repurchases to drive bottom-line growth. In the first half of 2009, 50% of the world’s electronic equipment makers experienced revenue declines. Inventory drawdown from last year further impacted volumes in major consumer electronics categories. The recession hit the consumer electronics industry in the back half of 2008, pulling down annual revenue numbers. The average U.S. household spent $1,229 on consumer electronics in 2008, a 12.5% decline from 2007. Both Wal-Mart (WMT) stores and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) have slashed the price of the new Pixi phone by 75% from the original $100 after the Pixi went on sale last week at Sprint Nextel Corp. (S). Amazon has also cut the price of Palm’s Pre to $79 from $99. The price cut may attract consumers in the coming holiday season, however we remain unsure about the future of Palm.
According to a recent Strategy Analytics research report, Apple Inc. (AAPL) surpassed Nokia (NOK) by generating the highest total operating profit in the industry for the third quarter of 2009. The research firm estimated Apple’s operating profit for iPhone handset units to be $1.6 billion, compared to Nokia’s (the number 1 handset maker) just $1.1 billion, beating the latter for the first time. Apple entered the mobile phone market with its iPhone in 2007. The company has experienced tremendous growth since then, driven by the success of its iPhone. This has resulted in Apple becoming one of the most profitable in the industry. Apple is running the highest margin phone business and thus has undergone a total turnaround from a loss of $0.07 per share in 2001 to a profit of

We are upgrading Apple Inc. (AAPL) to Outperform from Neutral, as we believe Apple shares have further room for expansion. Apple has experienced tremendous growth, driven by the success of its iPhones and increased Mac shipments. We expect the iPhone-driven momentum to continue, as the company’s product generates the highest customer satisfaction in the industry. In our opinion, this is the key to long-term growth and continued appreciation of the stock, given the large addressable market. The investment case for Apple is based on its earnings momentum and accelerated revenue growth. The company has undergone a total turnaround from a loss of 7 cents per share in fiscal year 2001 to a profit of $6.29 per share in fiscal year 2009. The third-largest US wireless carrier posted a net loss of $478 million, 47% more than the net loss of $326 million reported a year ago. We expect the company to report strong results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009, and therefore raise our price target to $200. Apple has undergone a total turnaround. The first nine months of 2009 is evidence of this trend, as both revenue and earnings exhibited growth, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate and the company’s own guidance. We still expect the stock to underperform the market as RIMM and AAPL continue to expand market share, and phones based on the Android operating system enter the market. We believe the maturing lifecycle of Centro, the slow ramp of its Windows Mobile-based product sales, and the time taken to add carriers to distribute its Treo products in the U.S. and global markets will continue to exert pressure on revenue and earnings.
The U.S. smart-phone market is growing at a rapid pace despite the ongoing global economic slowdown. A recent analysis by CTIA Wireless has revealed that the country’s wireless service providers have generated a massive $19.4 billion of data revenues from smart-phone users during the first half of 2009. This is an improvement of 31% year over year. This is primarily due to a shift in consumer preference towards feature-enhanced high-end PDA devices from ordinary mobile handsets used primarily for voice telephony. The PDA market size is likely to approach $200 billion by 2012, according to various industry sources. This grand opportunity provides massive scope for telecom service providers, equipment manufacturers, chipset developers, and wireless tower operators to retain new users and grow revenues moving forward.
AT&T (T) announced the launch date of Garmin Ltd.‘s (GRMN) long-awaited GPS smartphone yesterday. The second-largest US carrier will be the exclusive distributor of the device (called “nuvifone G60″) in the US starting Oct 4, 2009. This will end a more than year-and-a-half delay in the device’s US market launch, and also marks Garmin’s first foray into the US smartphone market. The touch-screen based nuvifone G60 will be sold at AT&T’s stores and online for $299, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year service contract. While access to GPS service will be free, customers can enjoy premium value-added services Incorporatedluding real-time traffic updates, weather, movies and local events for a monthly payment of $5.99. The company priced the offering at $16.25 per share. Upon the closing of the offering, Palm expects to receive net proceeds of approximately $313.1 million, which will be used for working capital and general corporate purposes. The company may receive $359.9 million in case the over-allotment option is exercised in full. The company also said that the underwriters have an option to purchase up to 3 million additional shares to cover over-allotments.
Shares of PALM (PALM) surged to new highs today on strong volume. Optimism about the forthcoming secondary offering and rumors about a possible bid from Nokia (NOK) are the primary reasons. Also sitting on traders’ minds is talk of a paid app store launching on Thursday. Unfortunately, a large amount of good news has already been priced into PALM. In fact, today’s rise reflects unwarranted optimism, not an improvement in the company’s business. PALM has a negative book value of $740 million, meaning its liabilities far exceed its assets. The company continues to burn cash and lose money. (Hence, the need for a secondary offering.) As far as the new operating system, current forecasts don’t suggest enough phones will be sold to support the current price. The Zacks Consensus Estimate

Yesterday, Verizon Wireless (VZ) slashed the price of the currently available BlackBerry Storm 9530 smart-phone to $50 with a two-year service contract. Industry sources infer that this may be an indication for the early launch of BlackBerry Storm2 as both companies gear up for the new smartphone. Launched in November last year, Research In Motion’s first touch-screen mobile handset Storm aimed to counter the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iconic iPhone. The launch of Storm2 in September/October would cut the older version’s lifetime to less than a year, indicating cut-throat competition in the smart-phone industry. This market is getting increasingly crowded with new players and should witness intense competition going forward. In addition to Research In

I’ve written about it here on several occasions, my family and I own a number of its computers, and we’re all “packin’ iPhones”. So when it comes to reporting on it, you could easily come to the conclusion that I’m about as far away from an unbiased journalist as you can get. But you’d be wrong. You see, I also own a computer that runs the Windows operating system published by Microsoft (not because I necessarily want to, but because I have to). I used to own a Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) Treo smartphone, too. I’m not going to write another

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will hold a meeting on Aug 27 to assess business practices in the U.S. wireless market. The telecom regulator will review various key aspects of the wireless industry including the competitive scenario, factors that stimulate innovation and investment and means to protect consumers from unfair practices. A major issue that will draw attention is the exclusive handset agreements between the Tier-1 US wireless operators and manufacturers. The US antitrust regulators have reportedly initiated legal proceedings to examine whether large national carriers are involved in anticompetitive practices and abusing their market power by unduly restricting services through exclusive distribution agreements with handset vendors. Exclusive handset agreements, which allow carriers to sell popular handsets at subsidized prices to attract customers is a common practice in the wireless

Recently, several incidents have been reported against exploding Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones and iPods. The incidents took place in certain European Union (EU) member states, prompting the European Commission to ask for clarification from manufacturer Apple. It appears that the overheated devices exploded before catching fire. In the recent past about three such iPhone explosion cases have been registered with the European Union, of which two occurred in France and one in United Kingdom. This iPhone explosion case has been preceded by a similar incident registered in Marseilles, France. Rapex, which is involved in the rapid exchange of information between the European commission and EU countries with respect to exchange of information on harmful consumer products, has not yet issued any report about the issue. Besides EU countries, the Japanese

According to the latest data from research firm Gartner, smartphone sales grew 27% year over year in the second quarter, surpassing 40 million units and representing the fastest growing segment in the mobile-devices market. We believe the volumes were driven by the launch of new devices such as Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 3G S, Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry and Palm’s (PALM) Pre with features such as touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. Aggressive price cuts led to increased consumer purchases, while ASPs fell. However, smartphone sales are averse to falling ASPs, which helped increase second quarter revenue. Moreover, the recent stabilization in demand boosted smartphone sales. Gartner said that the total mobile phone sales fell 6.1% year over year to 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009. Sales have been

The manufacturing build up in China for the consumer electronics (CE) 2009 Xmas season has started. Inventory drawdown from last year had an impact in the fourth quarter 2009 and the first quarter of this year so product volume in the major areas was down year to year. However, it appears that the worst is over as demand for computers and Flat Panel Display TVs is showing more strength than would be expected on a seasonal basis. But the problems of the worldwide recession had caused some companies to reduce production and some shortages will occur over the next few months. These include DVD and CD drives (since optical pick-up heads are in short supply); HDD drives for notebooks and LCD glass panels. PC demand is picking up in the

The company’s wireless arms O2 and Movistar will exclusively sell the premium handset when it becomes available in specified European countries during the holiday season in December 2009. O2 has received the right to market Pre in the UK, Ireland and Germany, while Movistar will have exclusivity in Spain.
Though the Nasdaq has been one of the best-performing indexes this year, tech stocks could be poised for further gains in the second half of the year. In particular, demand for storage devices and smartphones is showing signs of strength. During the past 2 weeks, several brokerage analysts have raised their profit projections on makers of these products. Storage Device Revenues Higher Than Anticipated Two storage makers recently raised their quarterly guidance. Seagate Technology (STX) said last week that both unit demand and pricing were “tracking favorably”. As a result, the company expects fiscal fourth-quarter revenues to be in a range of $2.2 to $2.3 billion. Previously, STX had guided for revenues of $1.9 to $2.2 billion. Gross margins should also be better at approximately 15%. Ten of the 17
