The mid-Atlantic region witnessed its first drop in manufacturing activity in eight months and the outlook for US economic growth showed a declining trend for the first time in six months. With these concerns sinking the benchmarks, the Dow suffered its 11th decline in the past 12 sessions and ended at its lowest level since January this year.
On January 22, 1984, Apple ran a television commercial introducing the Macintosh computer during the broadcast of Super Bowl XVIII. Inspired by George Orwell’s book 1984, a woman hurls a sledgehammer through a giant screen – in a fiery explosion – where a “Big Brother” figure is speaking to a bunch of nameless, unemotional faces. The takeaway was, of course, that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was taking over the world. Buying a Mac would show off your individuality and support of independent thought. That commercial was one of the most memorable and successful of all time. If the spot ran today, few would assume that the Big Brother character was IBM. A more logical assumption would be that it was Microsoft, Google, Facebook or, ironically, Apple itself. Fact is, to this

Revenue was more or less in line with consensus estimates of $8.1 billion. Historically, Google has done much better than Yahoo Inc (YHOO), which has been struggling to hold its own, and Microsoft Corp (MSFT), which is yet to gain critical mass. Google’s superior algorithms have consistently attracted more users and generated better conversions. Considering Google’s hedging program, the impact of currency was minimal on both sequential and year-over-year bases.
F5 Networks Inc. (FFIV) recently completed the acquisition of a provider of Diameter signaling products, Traffix Systems, for an undisclosed amount. The agreement to acquire Traffix was signed earlier this week. The acquisition will further strengthen F5’s exposure in the networking market. A 7-year old Israeli company, Traffix serves the telecommunications industry with its Diameter signaling routers, which are used in next-generation mobile (4G/LTE) and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) service provider networks. Traffix signaling delivery controllers facilitate carrier transitions from 3G networks to 4G/LTE and IMS networks and facilitates subscriber information exchange and connectivity among various network elements. In telecommunications, 4G/LTE (Long term Evolution)/IMS is the next generation of cellular wireless standards, following the 3G and 2G families.
Yesterday, Oracle Inc. (ORCL) agreed to buy Taleo Corp. (TLEO), a SaaS human resource software provider, for $1.9 billion or $46 per share. Following this announcement, shares of Taleo were up nearly 17%, closing at $45.64, yesterday. Taleo has a clientele that spreads across 5000 organizations. Taleo’s Talent Management Cloud helps organizations to enhance human resource capabilities, improve performance and drive growth. We believe that this acquisition is further evidence of Oracle’s continued focus on its cloud computing infrastructure. The acquisition is expected to expand Oracle’s public cloud offering. The public cloud, which originally comprised existing products including fusion applications, expanded the company’s penetration into the SaaS application space. We expect IBM to report modest results due to sluggish IT spending partially offset by robust growth from its key growth initiatives. We note that IBM has posted an average earnings surprise of 1.86% in the trailing four quarters, implying that it has outdone the Zacks Consensus Estimate by the same magnitude for the last four quarters. We do not expect any major changes in the earnings trend pattern for the current quarter. (IBM) in 2012.The company looks set to drive significant growth in this fast-growing sector, according to CEO Virginia Rometty. The strong growth of analytics can be attributed to the increasing complexity enterprises are facing in the decision making process. According to market research firm Gartner, analytics is expected to be one of the topmost strategic technologies for 2012. The research firm believes that the scope of analytics will expand manifold over the next few years, and will be a must for enterprises. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

Oracle Corp. (ORCL) recently announced its decision to acquire customer relationship management software provider, RightNow Technologies Inc (RNOW). This marks the company’s third acquisition in the past month and the largest after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems in January 2010. The acquisition is expected to close by early 2012. Oracle will have to pay $1.43 billion in cash, or $43 per share, which is approximately 20.0% of RightNow’s closing price of $35.96, as of October 21, 2011. According to Bloomberg, the acquisition values RightNow at 68 times EBITDA, the highest multiple for similar deals over the past five years. On a price/sales basis, the acquisition is valued at approximately 7.7 times of RightNow’s 2010 sales of $185.5 million. RightNow’s primary product helps companies manage customers’ questions and complaints. RightNow’s suite

IBM Corp. (IBM) is scheduled to announce its third quarter 2011 results after the closing bell on October 17, 2011, Monday. We noticed the quarter’s estimates treading in a positive direction, and considering the past trends, we continue to believe another earnings beat is on the cards. Prior Quarter Recap IBM reported strong second quarter earnings and revenues that surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Results were positively impacted by IBM’s key initiatives, such as Business Analytics, Smarter Planet and Cloud offerings that reported strong growth in the first half of 2011. Moreover, the company has been selected by many government agencies from different countries in the Asia-Pacific to provide services and technical support for their operations, thus ensuring a steady flow of orders and market share gains across various regions.

Reported EPS of 45 cents per share (Zacks is not taking the entire amortization charge in the company’s headline 48 cents per share number) beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 44 cents, and revenues of $8.4 billion topped Zacks expectations of $8.3 billion. The trading session was significantly calm compared to the high levels of volatility that the markets endured since early last month. For the first time since July 26, the Dow traded in a narrow range of a little over 150 points. Hopes about European leaders taking steps to resolve the Greek debt crisis also helped the markets’ uptrend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.4% and finished the day at 11,105.85. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was up 0.9% and settled at 1,172.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 2,532.15, after gaining 1.5%.
According to a recent report from news agency Bloomberg, Oracle Corp. (ORCL) and Google Inc. (GOOG) have agreed to attend a settlement discussion over the copyright- and patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Oracle last year. As per the order of the U.S magistrate, both the companies will be represented by their respective Chief Operating Officers (CEO). The settlement meeting is scheduled on September 19, 2011 and will be mediated by the U.S. Magistrate Judge. The attendance of the two CEO’s, Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Google’s Larry Page in the settlement meeting was strongly recommended in the September 8 court filing by the U.S. District Judge William Alsup, who is presiding over the case. The recommendation followed Oracle’s complaint regarding the failure of its out-of-court settlement efforts due to Google’s reluctance. In

Information Technology (IT) major, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) recently announced that their scientists have succeeded in developing chips powered by a relatively new memory technology known as phase-change memory (PCM). The new chips can reliably store multiple data bits per cell over extended periods of time. Till date, only single bit-per-cell PCM exhibits the desired reliability in data storage over a period of time, whereas no such results on multi-bit PCM have been reported. IBM said that they have successfully developed the multi-bit chips by doubling the density of a chip and reducing errors when reading data. The chips can store data 100x faster than existing NAND flash technology. They also have high storage capacities and the power to retain data even when the power supply is cut off.
