We downgrade International Business Machines (IBM) to Neutral from Outperform to reflect near-term risks to the company’s top-line growth and valuation. We believe that IBM’s long-term revenue growth potential is limited and remain cautious on currency fluctuation, which is taking a toll on sales and may be critical to earnings expansion over the next two years. While we do believe that cost-cutting initiatives and share repurchases will substantially increase earnings, we do not see the company catching up on its top-line growth. We expect revenue to decline by 7.8% in the current year, primarily due to low growth in some segments, continued decline in hardware and rising pressures on the services business. In the most recent quarter, IBM’s sales were down across the board and total revenue declined 13.3% (down

International Business Machines (IBM) said this morning that it would buy a privately held Singapore-based company, RedPill Solutions, to expand in analytics and optimization, particularly in the financial services and telecommunication business area. While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the company expects to close the transaction later this year, subject to statutory approvals and regulatory reviews. IBM’s analytics services offerings will get a boost from this acquisition as RedPill has a strong foothold in research and analytical services in key growth markets such as financial services, telecommunications, technology and hospitality. Earlier, IBM had agreed to acquire data-analysis and statistical software maker SPSS Inc. (SPSS) for about $1.2 billion in cash to expand its Information on Demand (IOD) software portfolio and business analytics capabilities Incorporatedluding Business Analytics and

At an event in San Jose, Mr. Larry Ellison, the Chief Executive and Chairman of Oracle Corp. (ORCL), the largest software company said that its proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA) for $7.4 billion ($9.50 a share) has been slowed by an ongoing antitrust review in Europe and the company is still waiting for clearance by the European Commission. The delay in approval from the regulatory body is causing Sun Micro to lose about $100 million each month. The major issue lingers on Oracle’s potential acquisition of Sun’s MySQL – an open-source database software which overlaps Oracle’s own database software. This could smother competition in the database software industry. However, Mr. Ellison said the deal is expected to be cleared by European regulators, despite the delay. It still remains

International Business Machine (IBM) and Cisco Systems (CSCO) recently announced the selection of Smart grid partners and products. Smart grid technology transforms the way power is distributed and used, adding intelligence throughout the grid, which ultimately results in substantial reduction of wastage and faults, improves receptiveness, handles current and future demand efficiently and manages costs. IBM’s smart grid maturity model helps to accelerate the adoption of smart grid technologies and business solutions. To enhance this segment IBM’s software platform is tying together various enterprise products like Lotus and WebSphere. This apart, IBM also announced that a host of vendors like BPL Global, Trilliant, Coloumb Technologies, eMeter, Itron and OSLsoft, and PowerSense are also securing certification to be involved in the Smart Grid project. On the other hand, Cisco Systems also

International Business Machine (IBM) is getting plenty of new SAP Business Applications clients who are switching from other database software to IBM’s DB2. This new database software provides an attractive alternative because of its lower cost, advanced analytical capability and higher transactional performance. IBM claims that customers are slowly moving to its DB2 Database from Oracle (ORCL), which is arguably the world’s biggest supplier of database software, to derive higher performance at a lower cost. Recently, Coca Cola Bottling Co. (COKE) moved from Oracle to IBM DB2 Database for implementation of the SAP ERP application. While DB2 reduces storage requirements by almost 40%, IBM is also of the opinion that it lowers the time of batch runs by more than 65% and thus improves overall supply chain efficiency of the

Salesforce.com (CRM) recently said that its cloud computing applications were selected by the General Services Administration’s (GSA) cloud computing storehouse named Apps.gov. This online cloud computing site introduced by GSA will help US government organizations to buy and use the cloud computing applications already agreed upon by GSA. Salesforce.com enters the Government cloud computing segment in a big way with this deal, although many cabinet-level government agencies are already using the company’s services. The positive news comes just after the company’s introduction of Service cloud 2, an enhanced version of service cloud computing that provides better solutions to customers. This includes Salesforce knowledge, Salesforce Answers and Salesforce for Twitter. Salesforce is thus blazing all guns to make its cloud computing services available to customers across all segments. Historically, Salesforce has
