About the Industry The steel industry can well be termed the backbone of modern society considering steel’s varied uses, be it in construction, transport, electrical appliances, food packaging and the like. In terms of its composition, steel is an alloy of iron and carbon containing less than 2% carbon and 1% manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen. Steel products are classified into four broad categories: flat steel products, long steel products, scrap and semi-finished products. Flat products include plates, hot-rolled strip and sheets, and cold-rolled strip and sheets. The long steel product category includes wire rods, beams, reinforced bars and merchant bars. The products under both these categories are rolled from steel slabs, which are considered as unfinished or semi-finished products that are generally not sold.

European debt concerns once again weighed down the markets and dragged the Dow slightly lower, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted meager gains. Reports of Germany’s economy contracting during the end of 2011 and a downward revision of economic growth estimates by the European Union (EU) dented the markets. However, a late upward swing helped the markets extend their stay around five-month high levels. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 0.1% to settle at 12,449.45. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) edged up by a mere 0.03% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,292.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.3% to close at 2,710.76. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

We are maintaining our Neutral recommendation on AK Steel Holding Corporation (AKS). The company recorded first-quarter 2011 EPS of $0.08, beating the year-ago quarter’s $0.02 and striding ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a loss of a penny. AK Steel expects a strong increase in shipments in the second quarter over the first quarter. The shipments are expected to be in the range of 1,500,000 and 1,550,000 tons. The company also anticipates its average per ton selling price to be 7% higher compared with the first quarter. The operating profit is expected to be approximately $65 per ton for the second quarter of fiscal 2011. We expect the company’s core operating results to be profitable by the second quarter of 2011, as higher carbon steel prices will more than

West Chester, Ohio-based flat-rolled steelmaker, AK Steel Corporation (AKS) announced that its #5 electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Butler, Pennsylvania Works was damaged on July 1, 2011, when molten steel inside the furnace breached the furnace shell harming certain components. Steel production at Butler Works resumed the following day using other electric furnaces at the plant that were not affected by the incident. The company announced that it did not expect customer shipments to be badly affected by the incident. Examining the root cause being absolutely imperative, the company proposes to carry on with the investigation, while crews begin to repair the furnace and its auxiliary equipment. In April 2011, AK Steel posted its first-quarter results delivering an EPS of 8 cents compared with 2 cents during the year-ago

AK Steel Holding Corporation (AKS) added a surcharge of $455 per ton for a broad range of stainless steel products it produces. This surcharge will be reflected in the invoices of electrical steel products shipped in August 2011. The surcharge is calculated based on reported prices for raw materials and energy used to manufacture products coupled with the June 2011 purchase cost. For second-quarter 2011, management expects shipments to be in the range of 1,500,000 and 1,550,000 tons, indicating a substantial increase over the first-quarter shipments.
With the gradual increase in the iron ore and coking coal prices due to increase in demand, AK Steel Holding Corporation (AKS) might consider obtaining raw material assets from outside. Acquiring pieces and parts of raw materials will help the company in lowering its costs. The profitability of the steel sector is closely tied to the prices of necessary raw materials. Considering the steel industry, these materials include iron ore, coal, coke, oxygen, chrome, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, zinc, limestone, carbon, stainless steel scrap, etc. Depending on the holdings of each firm, drastic changes in the prices of these raw materials can have profound effects on revenues and profits. We believe AK Steel is uniquely positioned to focus on products with high margins. Electrical steel continues to be the company’s strongest

Nucor plans to continue to seek attractive opportunities to acquire businesses, forge joint ventures and make other investments that are complementary to its existing strengths. Realizing the anticipated benefits of acquisitions or other transactions will depend on its ability to operate these businesses and integrate them with its operations and cooperate with its strategic partners. Nucor reported a huge increase in profit to $0.56 per share (excluding special items) for the first quarter of 2011 compared with $0.15 in the same quarter of 2010.
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Senior Analyst, Investment U Wednesday, June 22, 2011: Issue #1540 While most investors are focused on precious metals, I prefer to look for investment opportunities in markets less traveled. Sure, precious metals are still wildly popular – or not popular enough – depending on who you ask. And they’re always in the mainstream consciousness. Either the dollar is going to be worthless and gold and silver will be the only true stores of value, or precious metals are in a bubble and will correct to more reasonable levels. Again, it depends who you ask. But there’s another type of metal that I have my eye on. It’s one that hasn’t enjoyed the kind of run-up that gold and silver had recently.
The Institute for Supply Management’s survey of the Manufacturing sector of the economy rose by 3.5 points to 58.4 in January from 54.9 in December. That far exceeded consensus expectations for an increase to 55.5. It is also the highest reading on the consensus index since August of 2004. This is a stunning turnaround in the index, which in December of 2008 stood at 32.5, its lowest level since March of 1975. The index is set up so that any reading above 50.0 indicates that the manufacturing side of the economy is expanding, and any level below that indicated contraction. It is composed of ten sub-indexes, nine of which rose in January and eight of which are now above the magic 50 mark. The overall index has now been above

Nucor Corporation (NUE) has revealed a profit of $58.9 million or 18 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2009, compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 9 cents per share. This was an improvement over losses of 60 cents, 43 cents and 10 cents per share in the first, second and third quarters of 2009, respectively. However, the net income is lower than $105.9 million or 34 cents per share for the fourth quarter of 2008 due to reduced earnings in the company’s downstream, long products and scrap businesses, partially offset by the absence of high-cost pig iron inventories. For the full year 2009, Nucor has posted a loss of $293.6 million or 94 cents per share, in sharp contrast to a profit of $1.83 billion or $5.98

The Metals & Mining Industry encompasses the extraction (mining), as well as the primary and secondary processing, of metals and minerals. The industry is rather concentrated in structure, with a few producers accounting for the lion’s share of sales. Geographically, the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing higher production and consumption of metals, especially China and India. This is due to the per capita consumption in these two counties approaching the U.S./European levels, which could ? theoretically at least ? double metal demand in the longer term. Historically, the automotive and construction markets have been the largest drivers of metal consumption, more than 50% of the total demand. Other metal consuming industries include energy, electrical equipment, agricultural, domestic and commercial equipment and industrial machinery.
The Census Bureau reported today that New Orders for Manufacturers rose by 1.1% in November. This was up from a 0.8% increase in October (which was revised up from 0.6%) and comes on top of a 1.6% increase in September. The increase was much better than the 0.5% expected by the consensus of economists. Still, even though new orders have been up in five of the last six weeks Incorporatedluding very solid gains in each of the last three, we had dug ourselves a heck of a hole earlier in the year. On a year-to-date basis, new orders are off 19.2% for the first 11 months of 2009 relative to the first 11 months of 2008. Excluding the volatile transportation industry, orders were up 1.9% in November on top of

The result was narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a loss of 14 cents. In the second quarter, NUE announced a net loss of $133.3 million, or 43 cents per diluted share. However, the performance is dismal compared to a net income of $734.6 million, or $2.31 per share, in the third quarter of 2008. Losses in the quarter were driven by the negative impact of high-cost pig iron inventories of about $180 million, or 37 cents per share.
In September, the Producer Price Index (PPI) fell 0.6% on a headline basis, while excluding food and energy it was down 0.1% for the month. This is in fairly distinct contrast to August, where the PPI rose 1.7% on a headline basis and 0.2% for the core. Year over year, producer prices for Finished goods are down 4.8%. In August, they were down 4.3% year over year. These numbers, along with the low readings from the CPI last week (up 0.2% on both headline and core for the month, headline down 1.3% year over year with core up 1.5%) make it clear that the inflation dragon is sleeping. The big swing factor was energy, which fell 2.4% on the month after an 8.0% surge in August. That is not likely to last

Nucor expects losses of 15 cents to 20 cents per share in the quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate expects a loss of 15 cents.
