On Monday, August 23, 2010, the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia issued a temporary injunction on President Obama’s 2009 executive order that expanded federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, returning to order the previous ban enforced by the Bush administration in 2001. The news immediately halts National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding at academic and private research labs on embryonic stem cells. The ruling was a surprise, as several research programs had already initiated work under President Obama’s executive order. Controversy surrounding research using embryonic stem cells has grown since the NIH studies concluded in August 2000 that “…research involving human pluripotent stem cells…promises new treatments and possible cures for many debilitating diseases and injuries Incorporatedluding Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, burns and spinal cord injuries.”

The deal is worth more than $7 billion. This is closely followed by NSN’s announcement just a day before to buy Motorola Inc.’s (MOT) network-equipment business unit for $1.2 billion in cash. As per the terms of the contact, Nokia Siemens will install and maintain a new U.S. 4G LTE mobile broadband network with around 40,000 base stations that will cover 92% of the U.S. population by 2015. LightSquared is a new telecom network venture launched by New York-based hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners. Nokia Siemens plans to use its remote network operations centre in India extensively to manage the new network. In the past, NSN has

The auction, which started on April 9 and lasted for 34 days with 183 rounds of aggressive bidding, has fetched a staggering INR667.19 billion (US$14.6 billion), overwhelming the government’s initial estimate of INR350 billion (US$7.6 billion). The DoT has auctioned 71 3G spectrum licenses in the 2.1 gigahertz (GHz) band in India’s 22 telecom service areas (“circles”) with all the circles receiving bids. Three slots of spectrum have been auctioned off in each of the 17 circles while four slots were auctioned in each of the remaining 5 circles.
India’s 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum (radio airwave) auctions are expected to earn more than INR500 billion (US$11.2 billion) in revenues, based on recent information from the country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This represents a marked increase from the government’s previous revenue expectation of INR350 billion (US$7.8 billion). The DoT is auctioning 3-4 slots of 3G spectrum in the 2.1 gigahertz (GHz) band in India’s 22 service areas (called “circles”). The limited number of available license slots is propelling the bids. The DoT will also auction two blocks of BWA spectrum two days after the closure of the 3G auction. A total of nine bidders for the 3G auction includes major privately-held carriers Bharti Airtel, Vodafone’s (VOD) Indian arm Vodafone Essar, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, Aircel and Tata

The Indian telecom industry made history as the government finally kick-started the long-awaited 3G WCDMA spectrum (radio airwave) auction on Friday, April 9, 2010. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is conducting the 3G auction over the Internet with the bidders having respective passwords for accessing the sale process. Bidders at the auction are vying for a chunk of spectrum to roll out next-generation telecom services in the world’s fastest growing wireless market with roughly 600 million mobile subscribers. A separate spectrum auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is expected to start two days after the close of the 3G auction which may take several days to complete. Winning bidders have to pay for their licenses within 10 days following the auction closure. The DoT recently revealed the bidders’ names for

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), the largest mobile chipset developer of the world for CDMA technology, is planning to bid for upcoming broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum in India. The auction is likely to take place in 2011. Ministry of Telecommunication of the Indian Government is exploring several options to auction the available spectrum for next-generation high-speed 3G networks. Growing market traction of 3G wireless devices in India is likely to spur growth at Qualcomm. At present, India has more than 150 million CDMA wireless subscribers; out of which half a million are 3G subscribers. Currently, Reliance Communications and Tata DoCoMo, a joint venture between Tata Communications Ltd. (TCL) and NTT DoCoMo (DCM) are the two main CDMA service providers in India.
After prolonged drama and nagging delays, India has finally kick-started the 3G spectrum (radio airwave) auction process. The bidding for the long-awaited 3G WCDMA spectrum and WiMax (broadband wireless access) auction has officially commenced and the government has started inviting applications from mobile operators. Interestingly, no applications were filed by the privately held telecom carriers on the first two days (March 15 and March 16). Instead, leading participants such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices and Vodafone Essar ? the Indian subsidiary of Vodafone (VOD) ? plan to wait till the last day (March 19, 2010) to submit their bids. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is hopeful of getting a good response from the bidders on the last day. The DoT will auction 3?4 blocks of 3G

India’s telecom sector has reached a major milestone recently with the country’s mobile user base surpassing 500 million, boosted by a staggering 17.7 million new activations in Nov 2009. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (“TRAI”), India’s mobile customer base crossed 506 million at the end of November. Currently, 43 out of every 100 Indians own a cell phone. Including roughly 37 million fixed lines, India now has a total of 543 million telephone lines, a penetration rate of around 46%. There is considerable headroom for growth given the underpenetrated rural regions. Privately held telecom operator Bharti Airtel remains the market leader with roughly 116 million mobile customers recorded at the end of Nov 2009, followed by Reliance Communications (at 91 million) and Vodafone Essar (at 88.6 million),

Despite being the largest CDMA mobile chipset developer of the world, the company is facing reverses in its top-line growth during 2009. Ongoing global economic recession that resulted in significant reduction of demand for mobile handsets is the primary reason for this disappointing performance. At this juncture, China and India are a silver lining for Qualcomm. Explosive growth of China’s home grown 3G (TDS-CDMA) technology has enabled Qualcomm to make up its losses in the developed nations. The three Chinese giants, namely China Mobile Ltd.
by Sheena Martin, Contributing Editor Wednesday, November 25, 2009 Over the past five years, an incredible new technology has gained momentum and is set to make its debut imminently. And as always, early investors are likely to enjoy the greatest returns. The technology is known as Long Term Evolution (LTE). And the possibilities are endless: Machine-to-machine communication… wireless communication in cars and household appliances… instant downloads of video conferences. Simply put, it’s the likely successor to current 3G mobile broadband technology. LTE offers superior user experience and simplified technology. With seamless mobility services, consumers remain connected through any access technology, such as WiFi, WiMAX, xDSL, FTTx, wherever they are. So just because your wife dragged you to her colleague’s baby shower out in the backwoods doesn’t mean you can’t still

The severe economic recession and maturity of the Japanese telecom market have compelled Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (NTT) to look at other geographies. Industry sources say the company has started negotiations with Patni Computer Systems, the sixth largest software services exporter of India , to acquire 66% stake in the latter. Entry into India will unlock the $60 billion IT and ITES (IT enabled services) market to Nippon. In the last reported quarter, Patni generated approximately $166.75 million in revenue and around $33.7 million of net profit. Nippon, the largest telecom operator in Japan is facing strong competition in the Japanese wireless market and from the potential impact of low-cost, fixed-line services, such as “voice-over-Internet protocol” (VoIP). The company currently maintains a leading 50% share of the Japanese wireless market. DCM upgraded 98% of its total coverage area with 3G-HSDPA, while emerging 4G LTE networks are planned for deployment through 2010. DCM’s decisions to focus on mobile content, along with a renewed geographic expansion drive outside Japan are positive indicators. Furthermore, the company is launching an innovative online money transfer service. We consider DCM as an attractive long-term investment opportunity.
The Indian government has finally announced the 3G and WiMax (wireless broadband access) auction date. The country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will commence the auction process for 3G WCDMA spectrum (radio bandwidth) on Dec 7, 2009 and for WiMax on Dec 9, 2009. This ends months of speculation regarding the timing of the spectrum issue. The impending spectrum auction, which was initially scheduled to take place in late 2008/early 2009, was delayed due to disputes between the government and DoT regarding the spectrum pricing structure. To expedite the spectrum auction process, DoT finally increased the starting bidding price for 3G auction to INR35 billion (US$716 million) per operator from the initially set price of INR20.2 billion (US$415 million). Moreover, floor bidding price for WiMax spectrum auction is set at INR17.5
