Recently, Novavax (NVAX) announced final results from a phase II trial of its trivalent seasonal influenza Virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine in adults 18-49 years of age. Initial results from the trial were reported in 2009. The initial analysis carried out on 190 people (aged 18 to 49 years) showed strong immune system responses against three flu strains (H3N2, H1N1 and B) without any major adverse events. The complete study was conducted on 232 people out of whom 49 were on placebo while 19 received another trivalent influenza vaccine Fluzone at 15 mcg/dose. Novavax’s VLP vaccine was administered in two dosages of 15 mcg (83 candidates) and 60 mcg (81). It has been observed that the VLP vaccine induced a robust hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) antibody response against all the three strains.

We are pleased to hear that the vaccine developer Novavax (NVAX) has made a major breakthrough in a phase II clinical trial of its trivalent seasonal influenza virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate. While the trial carried out on 221 people (aged 18 to 49 years) showed strong immune system responses against three flu strains (H3N2, H1N1, and B), no major adverse events were reported. Given the success of the mid-stage trial, Novavax now plans to initiate a study in elderly adults by the fourth quarter and a phase III study next year. Although the progress made by Novavax is positive news, the vaccine is not likely to hit the market in the next few years. Hence, the vaccine will not be of much use in the current pandemic. Any development

Earlier this week, Novavax, Inc. (NVAX) disclosed that its vaccine, which has been developed using its recombinant virus-like particles technology, protected ferrets against the 2009 novel H1N1 virus in pre-clinical studies. (Ferrets are the closest animal to humans when it comes to getting infected with influenza.) Results showed that ferrets injected with a high dose of the vaccine did not develop flu symptoms and had no detectable virus in respiratory secretions three days after being exposed to H1N1. Subjects injected with a low dose displayed no detectable virus after five days, but those who did not receive the vaccine became ill. The vaccine was produced in less than four weeks using the company’s proprietory virus-like-particle vaccine technology. Traditional influenza vaccines take several months to produce. The company intends to start
