Crude oil was surging and any company related to this sector was on the rise as a result. However, recent events have made many investors pause when it comes to investing in the space. Many European countries are already in a recession while there are concerns building over the health of not only the American market, but the pace of growth in Asian nations as well. Yet despite these worries, the space could be promising for a long term, or even medium term outlook. This is especially true when one takes a closer look at the oil equipment space in particular. The day was somewhat marred by dismal economic data and news of explosion on an unknown Saudi oil pipeline. However, investors preferred the positives and the markets did finish in the green though it came down from its day’s highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) gained 0.2% and closed at 12,980.30. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) moved up 0.6% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,374.09.
Oil drilling equipment maker Cameron International Corp. (CAM) announced a $56 million contract from Norwegian oil company Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA to supply future subsea technology solutions for its oil and gas projects in the North Sea. Cameron said that the deal – representing its first full subsea system supply in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea – includes the development of wellheads, trees, flow bases, electro-hydraulic multiplexed controls, connections, pipeline end manifolds and other associated subsea equipment. The company expects delivery to begin in early 2012. The Cameron-supplied subsea production systems will aid the fast track development of the Jette field located in blocks 25/7 and 25/8 offshore Norway. It’s running out of “easy to get” oil. Oil companies aren’t chasing the vast amounts of fuel trapped in shale or tar sands because they want to… These sources are becoming the only ones left as production at the largest inland oil fields is declining, or is at least expected to soon. In its 2010 World Energy Outlook, the International Energy Agency estimated that approximately 40 percent of the oil production needed by 2020 has yet to be found or developed.
Earlier today, oilfield service company National-Oilwell Varco (NOV) reported better-than-expected third quarter results, helped by robust performance from its Rig Technology segment. Earnings per share, excluding transaction and restructuring charges, came in at 95 cents, well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 79 cents. However, compared to the corresponding quarter of last year, National-Oilwell Varco’s earnings per share was down more than 34% (from $1.44 to 95 cents), while revenues declined 14.5% to $3.1 billion. The year-over-year negative comparison was due to pricing and sales pressure, in tandem with lower international rig counts. Rig Technology Segment Revenue in the Rig Technology segment increased nearly 4% year over year to $2 billion. Of this, revenues out of backlog were $1.6 billion, up 17% year over year.
In its weekly release on Friday, Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported a slight dip in the number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the U.S., as producers restricted their drilling activities in response to the current supply overhang in the natural gas market. The number of units exploring and producing in the U.S. fell to 1,040 for the week ended October 16 (as clear from the first chart below from Baker Hughes). This is down by 1 from the previous week’s tally and is the first decline in 5 weeks. The combined oil and gas rig count is down by 936 from the year-ago period.
