The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The growth of the Aerospace and Defense industry depends largely on the spending outlook of government departments, with the U.S. defense budget being the primary driver. The industry largely depends on U.S. government contracts. Given the uncertain macroeconomic environment, not just in the U.S. but also globally, the industry faces the risk of fewer new orders as customers are more likely to postpone or cancel contractual orders and/or payments. Defense spending is the major source of revenue for the top nine global aerospace and defense companies, with the US accounting for more than 40% of total global defense spending. However, with the U.S. government expected to institute greater austerity in its

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) posted mixed results for the December quarter surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate on the bottom line but missing the consensus at the top. Looking forward, the company offers a strong program portfolio positioned to take advantage of focus areas in the defense space, an improving balance sheet and an ongoing share repurchase program. Our bullish outlook for the company is supported by favorable projected revenue, diversified revenue and earnings streams, and discounted relative valuation metrics. However, our bullishness would be tempered by apprehension regarding defense cutbacks on high-cost platform programs, over-exposure to the DOD budget, lower backlog, cost over-runs and reductions in the Afghanistan and Iraq operations. Northrop Grumman is the fourth largest U.S. defense contractor behind The Boeing Company (BA); Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT); and

We currently remain on the sidelines with Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) due to the impact of the Euro-crisis on U.S. economic fundamentals. This keeps the risk high for further cutbacks in defense budgets. However, we believe market pessimism is fully accounted for in the current valuation of the defense behemoth, which is priced at a discount to both industry peers and the overall market. Lockheed Martin is the largest U.S. defense contractor with a platform-centric focus that guarantees a steady inflow of follow-on orders from a leveraged presence in the Army, Air Force, Navy and IT programs. We expect the company to benefit from a strong defense focus on a number of its platform programs, such as the C-130 Hercules & C-5 Galaxy transport aircrafts, F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role jet,

Boeing’s future prospects to a large extent depends on the defense budget, as a major chunk of its revenue comes from government contracts. The European crisis and rising possibility of U.S Defense cutback will impact the order book and eventually slow down the growth trajectory of the company. Numbering among the positives for the company is its strong presence in the international commercial airline markets, which will allow the company to capitalize on the potential growth in the commercial space. In such a scenario, we believe Embraer will be able to sustain its strong position in the security solution business across Brazilian and other governments with a series of applications. Embraer’s worldwide customer orders servicing and on-time deliveries of corporate, defense jets and executive jet-support structures are worth mentioning.
French conglomerate Dassault Group’s Rafale combat jet emerged as the lowest bidder for the multi-billion contract for the Indian Air Force. The $10.4 billion deal is for supplying 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force (‘IAF’). The order heralded Rafale’s entry into the export market. Rafale’s entry into the export market is a major bad news for the beleaguered U.S. defense contractors who are looking offshore to compensate for the Pentagon’s planned axing of almost $1 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. Although defense primes have mostly reported upbeat numbers for fiscal 2011, we are concerned about future growth in order backlogs from domestic programs. Rafale emerged the winner beating five contenders and arch-rival Eurofighter Typhoon. Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multi-role fighter.

The growth of the Aerospace and Defense industry depends largely on the spending outlook of government departments, with the U.S. defense budget being the primary driver. The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The U.S. defense budget for 2011 was $670.8 billion, with the base budget at $513 billion and another $157.8 billion approved as supplementary defense spending mainly to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fiscal 2012 defense authorization bill passed by the U.S. Congress for $662 billion in defense spending includes $529.6 billion for core spending, reflecting a growth of 3.2% from the fiscal 2011 level.
Largest defense contractor, Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) has received two contracts worth $30.6 million to provide a fire control system known as the Target Sight System (“TSS”) for AH-1Z Cobra attack helicopter. The contract calls for Lockheed to provide spare units and parts as well as program support for the AH-1Z fleet. Manufactured at facilities in Ocala and Orlando, Florida, TSS is a multi-sensor electro-optical/infrared fire control system (“AN/AAQ-30”). It integrates high-tech sensors to provide aviators with superior images through a highly stabilized sensor suite, specifically customized for the AH-1Z platform. The suite includes a laser designator, color TV camera and a third-generation, mid-wave, forward-looking infrared sensor with advanced image processing. TSS has the potential to identify targets at maximum weapon range. The Naval Surface Warfare Center had earlier awarded

The administration is catching up to reduce flab in the budget, and the defense budget seems to stand out. In what is one of the final steps, the Pentagon has submitted to President Barack Obama a draft of its strategic budget review before its release. In the review, the Pentagon is seeking to trim about $450 billion in defense spending over 10 years to meet deficit reduction targets. The review, which will go to Congress in early 2012, will be accompanied by a defense funding plan through fiscal 2017. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta expects fiscal 2013-2017 defense budgets will be reduced by about $260 billion as part

Concurrently, the Air Force also exercised a contract option and Raytheon received a $5 million order to convert Lot 4 MALD production of the baseline to the MALD-J variant. MALD is a high-tech, low-cost flight vehicle that is modular, air-launched and programmable. It weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of approximately 500 nautical miles. The variant protects aircrews and their aircraft by duplicating the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft that confuses enemy air defenses. Northrop’s fortunes are heavily tied to missile defense-related programs and we caution that these programs are tempting targets in order to reduce the budget deficit. Northrop Grumman supplies a broad array of products and services to the U.S. Department of Defense. Its revenue and earnings growth are fortunately driven by its strong presence in the current focus areas of cyber security, modernization of defense and homeland security assets, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, advanced electronics and software development.
Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) announced that it received a contract from the U.S. Army worth $383 million to maintain, operate and sustain the Persistent Threat Detection Systems (“PTDS”). The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The majority of this growth came from the U.S. Defense spending, which was $698 billion in 2010, accounting for roughly 43% of the global total. Investor mood swayed from positive to cautious after disappointing ISM data and uncertainty prevailed ahead of the lawmakers vote on the borrowing limit issue. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost 10 points, or 0.1% to settle at 12,132.49. Earlier the blue-chip index had soared almost 140 points riding on the announcement by President Obama and the congressional heads. However, these gains were washed out by disappointing manufacturing data. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) shed 0.4% to close at 1,286.94. The Nasdaq Composite Index also lost 0.4% and finished the day at 2,744.61.

With this final phase, the program will complete its warfighter tests and Excalibur Ib will also qualify for fielding. The Excalibur Ib is a long-range, precision-guided artillery projectile based on Raytheon’s combat-proven Excalibur Ia. It has a non-spinning fixed base, and requires simpler manufacturing than Excalibur Ia that increases reliability and significantly reduces cost. Historically, Excalibur is the world’s only deployed extended-range GPS-guided artillery round, and has been fired more than 300 times in theater since its early fielding in 2007. (BA) began the Function & Reliability (F&R) testing and extended operations (ETOPS) on its much-awaited 787 Dreamliner before it receives necessary certification for delivery to its launch customer. These two tests will check the capability of the 787 Dreamliner in hazardous flying conditions. In the F&R test the aircraft will go through certain simulated normal and abnormal operations in a realistic airline-like flight environment, while ETOPS relates to checking the extended operations capability of the aircraft, when these are more than an hour away from the suitable landing field. ETOPS will certify 787 Dreamliner’s ability to fly safely when one of its engines fails to operate. Boeing along with its launch customer – Japan’s All Nippon Airways – decided in May to work together to

The rivalry in commercial aerospace between goliaths The Boeing Company (BA) and EADS, the European owner of aircraft maker Airbus, got hotter at the just concluded 49th Paris Air Show in Le Bourget. Airbus was able to clinch orders and commitments worth $72.2 billion outscoring Boeing’s $22 billion. The Paris Air Show clearly indicates that the ever-increasing fuel cost has tilted customers towards more fuel-efficient Airbus’ A320neos in preference to Boeing’s 737s. The changed scenario puts more pressure on Boeing, which is yet to determine whether to re-engine the 737 that could enter service in the 2017 timeframe or introduce a transformational new airplane by 2020. At the Air Show, Airbus secured about $72.2 billion worth of business for a total of 730 aircraft. The company received commitments for 312

Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) said it has installed a XLS-band antenna at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, to help military commanders gather real time weather information for their operations. This antenna is one among the series of six installations to be made worldwide as a part of the U.S. Air Force MARK IVB program. The remaining five installations under the program will be made in Kuwait and Hawaii by October 2011. Lockheed said these antennas will allow the Air Force Weather Agency to collect data from the new series of X band-capable weather satellites. The installation included construction of a tower and radome and installation of the antenna and computing infrastructure. The antenna installed in Guam is a three-meter tri-band antenna capable of collecting, processing and providing moderate resolution imaging
